5th Gen Ownership - Official Random Thoughts Thread - V3

Recommended Posts

I was driving home from the in-laws a few days ago and started to hear a distinct cracking sound every couple of minutes. I pulled over several times to secure things in the trunk (it was full of stuff), but couldn't figure it out.

Tonight I just went out to the grocery store and was hearing the cracking sound every 5-10 seconds. It sounds like there was some ice stuck between the trunk lid and the rear window, but to my dismay I was able to repeatedly make the sound by firmly pushing down on the bottom area of the rear window. The window is definitely not cracked, so I think it has something to do with the foam and adhesive that keeps the rear window attached. Does this sound right? If so, I guess I'll be taking this to a glass specialist to reinstall?

Here’s a previous thread on this noise:

Specs on the Wrangler?

Unlimited 80th Annivesary in Hellayella, 3.6V6 automatic, dual tops, LEDs, heated seats, safety packages, tow package, fulltime 4wd, limited slip rear differential, keyless entry.

It sure is an expensive vehicle. We went to the dealership thinking she would get the turbo 4 cylinder, but after the test drive we both preferred the V6 and it sounded much better. The turbo 4 was noisy and not in a good way. It didn't seem any faster/responsive like I read reviews said on the forum, maybe it had a little better mid range torque. Overall the JL drove better and handled better than I expected.

Yeah, they are definitely not a bargain vehicle like they used to be. The 80th anniversary is nice though.

One benefit about her getting a Jeep, is that I can use it to tow my boat. Previously, I was planning to replace my 2009 OB with a new OB, but I am no longer restricted to buying a vehicle to replace my 2009 for towing. My current plan is to drive my OB for another 2 or so years and pass that down to kids as a 1st car and I will get a new daily driver.

What is the spec on the boat beam, dry weight, etc?

V6 Wrangler can tow up to 3,500bs from there factory spec. There are Jeep owners that tows double the weight I have seen them at the boat ramp. I wonder what they actual can tow without burning up the transmission.

I don't know limits are. Most vehicles can tow larger than capacity trailers around at low speeds. You can reduce the tongue weight (to meet the manufacture specs) if your keeping the speed below highway speeds. This is how Europeans models have the higher tow rating, but they aren't expecting to drive above 45mph. Driving 65-75 with a light tongue weigh will cause the trailer to dangerously sway.

My main boat I tow has 5'5" beam and weights around 1000# with the motor and gas. The trailer is a little over 300#. I think it ended up being overall around 1350-1400#. I have towed it with my old 2012 Legacy 2.5i 6MT and '12 Legacy GT. It is over the 1000# tow spec, so I tow it with my OB. The Legacy isn't as easy to load up for the weekend or for full week for my GF and 2 kids as the OB.

I have another boat that is around 2000# 7'2" beam, the trailer is just over 600#. I would have to move the boat back on the trailer tp reduce the tongue to tow with my OB. It exceeds my OB tongue weight spec of 200 max. I have been towing it with my Dad's Toyota Tacoma. I bought it in the fall of 2019 but I am going to sell that this spring year. Last summer, I spent over 25 days on the Cape Cod (5 long weekends and 1 week long vacation) and I just didn't get enough use out it. If I want a 2nd larger boat, I need to live near the water to get the use of it.

I use to tow a 17 footer Bayliner Capri cuddy cabin with a single axle basic trailer way back in the day with a 1985 Toyota 4cyln 2wd long bed. The ball hitch was mounted on top of the chrome bumper. I use to tow it on the highway about an hour and half drive each way to the boat ramp. I did that like 4 years. It killed the gas tank. I had to fill up twice a day going and coming back from the boat ramp.

I have a SUV with the factory tow package now. it's rated at 7,200 pounds towing capacity. I'm looking to purchase my next boat But I'm looking at a 30-40' twin in/out it has to have A/C and cabin. I Like to jump into the tri axle trailer with the brakes.

Spotted a grey GT turning onto Reston Parkway and then Fairfax Cty Parkway in VA the other day. Had a handi plate... which one of you old guys was it!? lmao (disclaimer: not making fun of folks with handicaps).

I was in the black N/A with the Shenandoah Parks plate. I usually don't post spotted, but its a rare occurrence in this crowd. Don't care for FB groups so not joining/checking there.

There is a spotted thread in the Mid-A forum, but it’s typically dominated with 4th gen spotting.

Not me either, driving the truck these last few weeks but heading out to the cabin tonight and will be bringing the LGT home so keep an eye out for a silver blur on the Dulles Toll Road Sunday evening. I did see a grey LGT out toward Winchester a few months ago (was going to say last winter but about froze my nards off at a little league game last night) but agree, very sparse 5TH gen sightings around NOVA.

Was planning on picking up a set of Falken 615k+ in 245/40/18 for my track day in two weeks, waited too long and they went on a nationwide back order. Talked to the guy that was gonna get the tires for me and he recommended Hankook RS4s. They were $800 for the set, and that was more than I wanted to spend, but I really wanted some serious tires for my first track day in two years. Well, was planning on sending him the money after my lunch break today, and halfway through my lunch, I get a text from him "Well, your procrastination paid off. 6x 615s just came in stock in DC". $565 for the set. Saved me $235 which will make this track day WAY more viable. Stoked. :D Edited by Humble Rumble

Been out of the GT loop for awhile. Since September/October We were transitioning to our new home from Kansas City to Pittsburg, KS. Had a 560sq ft rental in Pittsburg (20 second drive to work) while I drove to KC every weekend for 3 months to prep and repaint the entire inside of the duplex. Sold the duplex in April, bought a house in May, and finally moved in last weekend.

The garage still has boxes, so the cars still sit outside for now. I felt horrible leaving the GT outside this last winter, but had no choice.

The nice thing is I was able to epoxy the garage so it looks really good. The GT needs a good cleaning, so hope to get to that soon. It is due for its timing belt service, and I think I'm going to get a new clutch installed at the same time. The throwout bearing still whines.

All the roads around Pittsburg are long and straight, so finding some twistys is going to take some searching. I'm kind on the fence with what to do with the GT going forward. I love the car, but a Jeep may be calling my name. In no hurry since it is so enjoyable.

Hope to be more in touch with the group now that we are settled.

It sounds like you have been busy. A little clean up and your car will be fine.

If you do pull the motor to do the clutch & timing belt, I would check the valve clearances. You only need to pull the valve cover to check them. To adjust them (the adjustment is using different buckets), you need to remove the camshaft which isn't that much hard if are you doing the timing belt. The hardest part is removing the cam bolts from the pulley's. The one thing is that they maybe all be out spec, but you will need to make a judgement if any are really tight that it will could leading burnt valve on the exhaust or intake intake not fully closing in the future.

I was doing some searching for my 2010 Legacy GT project and I ran across an old thread of mine from 4 years ago which was deciding from buying a used Legacy GT vs buying a new WRX

https://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/my-legacy-gt-dilemma-buy-not-buy-260682.html?t=260682

Personally, I thought it was interesting retrospective a few months after my divorce. I forgot how completely undecided I was and how at times I was very close to making a decision to buy a WRX. I forgot that I injured my foot that years and I had to let it rest it for couple months. (The x-rays showed that I have bone spurs on heels and arches.)

In that thread, I made a few plans and predictions. I was pretty accurate on almost all of them, from predicting I would pay off my LGT loan early, buying 2005-2009 2.5i, financial savings, plans to tackle small project around the house 1st and saving up to renovate my kitchen. The one prediction that I don't think is going to come true is getting rid of my GT in 5 years (next year) and my plans to buy a new WRX to replace it. It still could happen but my plans are to keep my GT for a few more years and a new WRX isn't high on my radar for a replacement.

Just saw my first fellow GT out in the wild, and of course I wasn't driving mine. Didn't recognize it as anyone's on here.

GGM paint, blacked out headlights, L7 badges, aftermarket wheels, super dark tint, PA plate. Saw it on I-96 west in SE Michigan.

Yeah that was quite the flashback Dave.

We seem to be on the same wavelength, I do love the LGT, its a nice sleeper that I happen to like the looks of, and the space and interior is just such a step above the spartan WRX's of the same era.

I am also looking at the latest WRX's, but my LGT is in great shape and pretty much how I want it already, so I dont mind keeping it longer.

Why did the WRX get pushed down the ladder for you? What's on your radar now instead? I like and dont like the WRX's for the same reasons as you lol, interested in your latest view on it.

IIRC you also mentioned letting go of the Syclone? Paradigm shift in general for you?

Hope your injuries get better and and things are ok with you post-divorce.

I still own my Syclone. I eventually I plan on selling it but I haven't gotten to doing anything about that. I am not in a rush at this point to do that. I have my Legacy GT exactly the way I want it and I still very much enjoy driving it.

The shift has been caused by my Outback, not driving my Legacy year round and wanting to get down to 2 cars.

I want to buy something between 2.5i OB and Legacy GT as my daily driver. Candidates are a new OBXT, Legacy XT. I suppose I could buy a WRX. My fiancé has a new Jeep Wrangler so that covers my towing that I need from my current Outback, but I do like my Outback's form. My fiancé doesn't drive a MT so that put one strike against the WRX (I am not buying a CVT WRX if the MT is available) My timeline for this is about 2-3 years.

I eventually want to buy something between my Legacy GT and Syclone. I know that will definitely be a MT vehicle, but I am all over the place on what that might be from a modern muscle car, one of Cadillac V series/BW, last MT of C7 Corvette or an old school 60's Corvette. As I write this I realize this will probably be an American car. My timeline for this is unknown.

Hope your injuries get better and and things are ok with you post-divorce.

I worked out at the gym too much post divorce. I just have to listen of my feet. I have been fine since then, besides a day here and there. In 2017, my right foot was bothered me for at least 4 months.

Gotcha! I'm all over the place too. Aside from the usual quick conveyances I've started considering Outbacks and Volkswagen Sportwagens in addition to or replacing the LGT as the family is growing. No real timeline either, I like imagining what to get, but if I come across something that hits all the right chords it may just suddenly happen lol!

I think I remember that thread. It is interesting to look back see how our plans actually worked out.

I have seen an older guy in town twice now with a current gen red WRX. Waved at him both times and nothing…..I am determined to get a wave back. [emoji1]

Also, in a town of 20-25k, I will see him again. Slightly different than the over 2 million in KC.
