Is it just me, or do ALL of the JDM/ROW cars have the taller grille now, that Used to be Spec B only.

I like the new regular 2.0GT bumper, but I prefer the Spec B mesh grille, and they should be interchangeable, as the both look to be the same size now.

I wonder if the US will get the taller grille for next year (08), or how they will change the front and rear bumpers for US regs and lobbying....

That new Newport Blue Pearl is NICE. I am liking it very much. Kinda odd, though that JDM has something like five grayscale colors, and two blues, and that is all. two silvers, two darker grays, and black, with regal and newport blues. No red at all... but that is probably where blitzen comes in. Beige for the Outbacks/Tribecas, of course...

I wonder if the US color palette will be changing drastically, or if Newport Blue and Diamond Gray Metallic will be all.

and BTW, those asking about the "vents" in the rear bumper... those are trim inserts that are optionally replaced with rear fog lights. they don't extract heat from the rear brakes or anything... just either black trim insert or red rear fog lights.

Dude...remember this is SOJ not SOA offerings. Ours may be entirely different than what you see in terms of design, color choice, interior etc etc.

I assumed that...but the way Suby tries to make parts interchangable between cars to keep costs down I would assume that's about 80 maybe 90% of what ours will look lke.

Do the sedans have the same round style internal tailights like the wagoon? If so Round seems to be a theme, cupholders, gauges, tailights, headlights, shifter trim, did I miss anything?

I was wrong earlier! The sedan tails are also round internally:

That new blue is nice... Other than that, nothing too much to be jealous of, hehehe. Now if they go catless, offer VDC-light on regular GT manual models and bring back the GT wagon with manual, then I'd be jealous!

Looks like Subaru is doing some little things that will make a difference. Need to keep doing this sorta thing every year and combine it with a good ad campaign.

gt-ltd,

Is it just me or does this advert make it look like the guy is shifting thru the gears with his AUTOMATIC. Can you say "poser". Subaru is promoting what it is cutting out of it's product line. At least they were honest enought o leave any false claim of a sport wagon out of the advert. Talk about turbo lag, Subaru must have edited out the part where the driver sleeps while waiting for gear shift change. Maybe the advert is intended to say that LegB has good brakes and is faster than a slow flying bird??

Subaru is a niche player by any std and the SpecB is a weak entry into a niche that BMW, Audi, Toyota, Infinity, Mazada can play strong. Watch the competitions emerging models and try to figure out why Subaru thinks they have an advantage. AWD is not enough and no longer unique, even for Infinity. A 250 HP turbo engine, especially with Subaru's AT, is no giant killer or super value.

- What's wrong with an automatic? Believe it or not, most people buy auto. vehicles. $$$ > *

- What turbo lag? I don't see any hood scoop in the video. Anyway, I think I read somewhere that the new JDM turbo kicks in around 2000 RPM.

- How many auto. transmissions (except DSG, SMG and others found on expensive vehicles) can shift faster than Subaur's?

- The new JDM 2.0 spec.B 6MT has 280HP, while the 5EAT has 260HP. But you are right, the USDM 250HP turbo engine sucks, and I won't get another one. ;)

a british review before paul's!

Subaru Legacy 3.0 Spec B

When it comes to leaving a Legacy, Subaru knows what it's doing. However, even the Japanese company's talented team of engineers couldn't resist tinkering with the large family model, and this is the result.

The facelifted Legacy hits UK showrooms later this year, but Auto Express has already had a world exclusive turn behind the wheel at the Fuji Speedway circuit in Japan. Subtle visual changes give more on-road presence, although the Subaru stylists have refrained from wielding the axe too heavily.

A pair of BMW-style headlights flank a larger, more pronounced grille, while there are compact lamps at the back.

Fresh alloy wheels also feature, but the ungainly corporate look which was previewed by the latest Impreza and forthcoming Tribeca SUV hasn't made it to the Legacy. Instead, the focus has been on improving performance and handling - areas in which the current model is already highly accomplished. Under the bonnet, the 2.0 and 3.0-litre boxer powerplants remain unchanged. However, the maker has reworked the exhaust systems to produce a much throatier sound than before.

More important is the highly responsive paddleshift in the top-of-the-range 3.0-litre five-speed auto model. It's not as slick as VW's DSG or BMW's SMG, but it is smooth and efficient.

Subaru Intelligent Drive, or SI-Drive, is another innovation. It debuted at last month's New York Motor Show, and is standard on the flagship model. Using a dial behind the gearknob, the driver can maximise engine performance and efficiency by selecting Intelligent, Sport or Sport Sharpmodes.

Put simply, the system controls the electronic throttle response and engine ECU. Intelligent mode reduces the maxi-mum torque and power available - by as much as 50bhp - for crawling in traffic, resulting in an improvement in fuel economy of up to 10 per cent. Sport Sharp brings a quicker throttle response. Thanks to the new exhaust system, the Legacy even feels quicker, although the 3.0-litre still sprints from 0-60mph in around 5.5 seconds.

Meanwhile, the intermediate Sport mode is a fine default setting - so the system effectively provides three engines in one. Enthusiastic drivers will no doubt leave it in Sport Sharp, however, where the Subaru feels most at home.

Responding to claims that the Legacy had gone all soft and mushy, the manufacturer has welded specially designed bracing to the body below the A-pillars and fitted stiffer bushes. The result is exceptional turn-in.

Add precise and superbly weighted steering to the excellent traction available from the four-wheel-drive transmission, and the fastest Legacy of them all is an impressive performer.

Better still, the engineers have also managed to preserve the excellent ride quality. Inside, the level of comfort has been boosted as well. The facelifted model has telescopic steering adjustment, along with a memory-seat function and individual climate controls for front and rear passengers. So, while the newcomer might look only mildly different from its predecessor, Subaru has actually redefined and improved every major part of its family offering. Now that's some Legacy...

gt_ltd,

I responded to your "question" about the advert. You are correct that most people buy ATs and Subaru's AT is as good as all the other "non" performance cars. In regards to the advert, I thought it was a poser act or false implication to make it look like the guy was shifting a car that is put in "D" and shifts itself 98% of time. IMHO, advert implies shifting is cool and sporty, but the car in the advert shifts for you, thus "poser". No problem with Subaru making $$$ by doing what every other car maker does now, inlc BMW, by making MT a near special order car.

My turbo lag point was not obvious and poorly stated. I was saying that if "some" turbo critics talk about turbo lag, what about AT lag when entering or exiting a corner? I do not think my O5 LegGT has a turbo lag problem and that leads to the last point.

I do not think that my 05 LegGT wagon's 250 HP engine sucks. Quite the contrary. Given its price point ($29K+-) and fun factor, given its dependability (unlike Audi/Saab) I think it is a great engine. I enjoy it every day more than my BMW325. Now, add a bunch of fluff and $32K+ price for a current SpecB and I think you have a nicely tailored empty suit. Given the price point range the specB enters, IMO the specB lacks substance as special performance sedan with the std LegGT 250HP and non-sport AT. I know the SOA specB also comes with, or will come with a 6MT, and I know R&D really liked it in comparo test, but it is no bargin. If the price point does not climb and the HP/torque goes up to 280+, I would say it has legs.

Again, my comments were in regards to the Advert you asked about and the use of an AT in that advert being presented as "shifting machine". I think the advert sucks. The specB is not a special sport sedan or a special LUX sedan, it does not offer optons and it has not been given big commitment by Subaru, IMHO.

No matter how many times I post how much I love my LegGT/MT wagon over much more expensive cars, my critical view of Subaru's market position seems to put me out of sink with Forum and I will quit beating my tired, repetitive drum beat. I still enjoy the forum and the many informative posts.

I know how you feel. I have been critical, as well, especially of the content change and price point of the spec B; not only vs. the competition, but vs. the Legacy GT limited.

Somehow the non-monolithic point about Subaru making really good cars, but also not living up to the market competition or their potential tends to confuse people.

The cars are good, quite possibly even great, but they are not perfect, and could be better in some fairly easliy identifiable ways. If I didn't like Subaru to start with, I wouldn't care enough to analyze and write about it, and I would be waiting to buy one, and saving to afford it, I'd have bought a cheap clap-trap already.

"welded specially designed bracing to the body below the A-pillars and fitted stiffer bushes [bushings?]"

Now that's interesting... Wanna know more about these braces/bushings!

Yeah I wonder what that is too? Is it similar to the aftermarket braces you can get except welded? Telescoping steering wheel too, YES!!
