New 08 Legacy Pics!!

Downshift blipping mechanism is standard on 3.0R spec.B.

what does that mean?

Automatic rev-matching (sort of). People with manual trannies (especially racers) will tap the throttle to rev the engine up a bit to make gear engagement easier when down-shifting. Blipping mechanism automates this process.

dotted line is MT

Now look at that, why doesn't SOA feel that americans would appreciate such a thing? Ugh, maybe a dumb question. That's what legacy needs to compete with Audi :(

Downship blipping ATs are cool. When will they be able to simulate that whiplash and rush you get from letting out the clutch? Not a performance issue, but a driving satisfaction, fun issue?

I have no doubt the day is near when ATs will be so quick and have enough cool things, like downshift blipping that we will all follow the Formula 1 gods into AT land and never smell clutch in traffic again. Torque, clutch junkies can always get their fix by taking a Jeep Rubicon out for a spin on the weekend. People still ride horses for the "fun of it".

I know how you feel. I have been critical, as well, especially of the content change and price point of the spec B; not only vs. the competition, but vs. the Legacy GT limited.

Somehow the non-monolithic point about Subaru making really good cars, but also not living up to the market competition or their potential tends to confuse people.

The cars are good, quite possibly even great, but they are not perfect, and could be better in some fairly easliy identifiable ways. If I didn't like Subaru to start with, I wouldn't care enough to analyze and write about it, and I would be waiting to buy one, and saving to afford it, I'd have bought a cheap clap-trap already.

I agree with you and MtnSub. They are great cars but could be better with little effort.

Oh, and MtnSub, I'm totally with you on the MT wagon viewpoint. I'm glad I got one when I did. I also understand SOA's point about not offering them because they don't sell enough. I don't know enough about how cars are made but I would think they could maybe offer a MT wagon as a special order option only. I'd be willing to wait a couple extra months for one if that was an option.

BTW, I'm diggin' the new look for the most part. I sure hope SOA doesn't f*** it up too bad when it comes over next year.

Thanks to gt_ltd and Paul at apexjapan (and any others) who have contributed pics, links and info.

Cheers!

Hey guys, I just read the autweek article. There was a part that said that the jdm 08 legacy has a throatier sound because soj changed the exhaust. Do you guys know what they changed? Ex. Manifold? mufflers?

Hey goneskiian, just a reminder,

We still have an 11-13 foot base at Mammoth Mtn out here in the Golden State and we may get the July 4 date for ski operations pushed back. Had a foot of fresh this weekend. Top of Gondola to bottom of Mtn will rock till July 4th. Bad news for Mtn Bikers, but good news for skiers. Conditins are great from 9-12 in perfect corn. Bring your FAT skis.

Just to keep this on topic, Mammoth is Subaru Mecca with every model ever sent to SOA on the road. Every parking lot in Mammoth will have double digit counts of Subys in the lot. Launching out of a power turn over a bump on skis reminds we of the waitless, slingshot feeling you can get letting out your clutch. My new K2 outlaws suck up vibration and rough surfaces like a Kart racer.

Won't know the exact exhaust changes till Ross at AVO pulls one apart, I'm sure.

Just some personal observations. I'm sure everybody here is used to the JDM and USDM cars being different, but there is the possibility this car was designed, for once, to go to different markets mostly unchanged. One clue is the cupholders - point blank, nobody has a drink that size in Japan. Even the pet bottles are smaller than that (having been designed, a long time ago, to fit in the smaller standard cupholder). So I believe Subaru designed the interior to go over as unchanged as possible (other than the switch from RHD to LHD). The front bumper area has been changed in design so that the grill area/hood has been moved forward a touch. This makes it feel a bit more aggressive, but it also may be allowing for the differences in bumper beam lengths between America and Japan/Australia. The seats are wider/flatter as well, which sounds a lot more like the USDM seats already in production over there.

I'll take any praise I can get for that shot of Peter in the Spec B, as to get that shot, I had to sit in the back of an impreza turbo wagon as we fanged it about the track. The entire rear cargo area had been stripped down to the metal, including the removal of the spare tire, and I was loosely strapped into there, sitting inside the spare tire well cross-legged. There was nothing to brace against, other than some sharp metal objects at my back - I had some interesting bruises from that. Oh, and it was raining, we'd make one run then I'd have to clean water spray off the lens!

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

...that was indeed a great shot. It really shows off the mesh pattern of the Spec.B grille very well; the best I've seen to date.

You are right about the bumper thing. The lights look like they have bags under thier eyes like the current USDM model.

Yea, +2 here. Many peeps here are not objective and a few don't know a good driving car when it runs them over. to each his own.

They aren't. Small round reflector fogs now...

The problem with the Spec B bumper really is the fact that the air dam doesn't extend all the way across the bumper, but rises in the middle. Looked iffy on the Ferrari 360, and it looks iffy here.

The 2.0GT normal bumper (like the blue cars pictured) reminds me of the previous body-style S401 bumper, and look nicer. Foglights the same there, as well.

yeah it looks like the front end has been elongated to match the bumper... still not the beautiful stubby look, but better than what we have now.

I want the headlights and taillights for my car already!! They look awesome. Wonder how long it'll be b4 we can buy them?? And for that matter...I wonder if they'll fit or not?? Nevermind, I can already see that the headlights won't work, curved at bottom where mines not. Maybe tailights will work for wagon. That'd be sweet!!

Holy smokes! I may have to dust my new Outlaw's off and drive them down. That would be a fun road trip. Bring the bikes with me too of course as Tahoe is on the way (as is all of Oregon) and there's great riding to be had on the way to the great snow!

Keeping on topic, I'm almost hoping they don't offer a Spec. B wagon as I don't know if I could convince the wife to trade in our '05. I'd sure like one though!

Hansen-san - OUCH! I would have thought they'd rig you up a rear facing seat or some kind of harness. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to your reports of how the new offerings drive. ;)

Cheers!

Someone mentioned in the 07 thread that they had read that this engine line up may come to the U.S.

3.0 & 2.0

I would think the DOHC (non-turbo) 2.0 would be better than the 2.5i? Lord knows it can't be slower. But 2.0 Turbo vs. 2.5 Turbo? Boy there would be a lot of aftermarket companies pissed...

I find this hard to believe at least the 2.0 swap...

Thoughts? Feeling?:icon_bigg

SOA will keep going with the 2.5 litre engine here in the States, they made the switch on the WRX platform to "streamline" everything. Do not expect it to jump back down to 2.0L ever here in the US.

That's what I assumed...its just not cost feasible
