2005 Legacy GT V8 Build (LS2/LQ4)

Recommended Posts

I took the bellhousing off the transmission and mounted it on the mockup motor. I also placed some shims on the subframe to lower it about 3/4". I had to make about a 3/8in dent on the drivers side of the tunnel so the bellhousing would clear.

I then put the motor on jackstands and aligned it into place. The steering rack now has much more clearance and went from being about 3" below the subframe to about 1" below the subframe. The motor still has a little room to be raised so I may only have to drop the rack about 1/2" which I can make up for with a bumpsteer kit

The intake sticks out only slightly and I am able to close the hood but it very tight but I should be able to slightly modify that portion of the hood to clear

Aluminum sheet for the spacers and rectangle bar the subframe came in so we hope to fabricate a good amount of that over the weekend otherwise we worked on the wiring harness for the Miata this week.

Aside from spacing issues, does anyone make a kit to mate the subaru trans to an LSx series motor? I would die and go to heaven.

well i can but the problem is the engine has to sit to far forward ( into the bumper beam) for the subaru awd transmission to work. this is why i used a gm v6 turbo engine witch pretty much fits in the stock workings.

Now that's thinking out of the boxer!

fyi all 05 + legacy's have built in code reader

There have been a couple adapter plates for this floating around NASIOC in the past, and I saw it for sale on one site (made to order). Fitment would indeed be a nightmare, but it is a swap I have researched (with much help from Frank_ster who was helpful, and the attempted help of many others who were not) to the Nth degree. I would be happy to go over anything with you, just shoot me a message. I still have a lot of the measurements written down somewhere. The engine itself is only 22.5" long. The problem is the height of it (see intake manifold pics above), the accessories (there are much flatter alternatives, see RS4 LSx swap) and thus also the positioning of the drivetrain, which would be best to move around (read the nightmare part of the swap).

We made some progress in the last few days. The Miata is on the ground with the Engine, trans and rear end mounted. We have started wiring it up.

On the Subaru, we cut out 3/4" subframe spacers from aluminum and got the subframe in position.

Then we trimmed the subframe so we had enough clearance to be able to weld rectangle bar and steel plate in to reinforce.

We were able to get the engine level and positioned and started welding from the engine mounts towards the frame rails.

The plan is to use the rectangle bar to get from the mounts to the frame. then weld the bar to the subframe and then we are going to user 1 1/2" square bar to make a box around the oil pan and connect it to the radiator support at the front. I will post some pics shortly of where we are so far

Very adventurous.

Food for thought: Is the body strong enough for all that torque, or will it twist up like a pretzel?

The body can handle it.

Don't forget to lower the rear LCA mount.

Do you have any plans to optimize front suspension geometry for RWD? It's not an easy task if you want to do it right, but it would pay off.

The body is plenty strong and as far as the engine mounting, that tubing will be connected from frame rail to frame rail and then to the factory subframe as well as to the front radiator support so it will hold up well

Hehe good reminder, I have been trying to find Outback parts to modify some of the piece as that is the height that the subframe sits now but I may end up having to but new. For now, my goal is to get it running so I can fine tune it and not have any dangerous bump steer. After that point, I am going to re-do the whole suspension and try to make it optimal for the RWD setup

Did some more work on the subframe today. Will probably pull it out after thanksgiving to finish reinforcing it and paint it. We also threw in the stock radiator and fans and mocked up the water pump and the pictures below show that there is plenty of space in front of the motor

We made a lot of progress on the Miata. The engine is in the car and we are finishing up the accessories. The harness is 80% complete and we hope to finish it up by the weekend and get it started. We are going to complete the Subframe for the Legacy this week and start on the transmission mounting. Here are a few pics of the Miata
