I could be wrong.. It has happened a few times in the past :)

Honestly, I think it's an issue with Subaru boxer motors, in general. A Subaru specialist by me says that while turbo EJ motors generally don't have early HG failures like those common to the N/A 2.5L motors, that's eventually how they go.

Like all preventive maintenance, better safe than sorry.

IIRC The '05 LGT's were prone to blown head gaskets.

I can attest to this being the culprit in my case. Nothing extremely catastrophic, but, bad enough to warrant a new engine, hence, my build.

Has anyone done the Killer B oil pickup tube swap? If so was the oem one cracked like most say they do? Or does this not pertain to the 05+ Legacy's?

This DEFINITELY pertains to the 05+ Legacy's. I noticed some audible valve tap and decided to buy a pickup. Pulled the OEM part and sure enough, hairline crack 2/3rd's of the way around... Definitely look into it.

How about the TOB issues? Think I heard mine making some noise tonight

What about it? Mine went out at 85k.. I was lucky enough to catch it before the bearing blew. It's one of those things that you should replace as soon as you start to notice it. If the bearing lets go it creates quite a mess of the transmission snout.. Better safe than sorry.

mine started making noise at 64,000, my previous vehicles have needed a change around there too.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks.. looks like quite a bit of work.

Can I run my stock oil pan with the KB pickup and baffle?

This car's gonna be around for a long time, might as well try to make it as good as I can.

you can definitely run the kb pickup and baffle with a stock pan, that's what I'm running right now. It's really not that bad, I did it in a weekend, most of my time was sitting and waiting for the fujibond to set. Might as well swap out your motor mounts while you're in there, you have to almost take them off anyways.

Yes. For about double the price, you can make it easier on yourself and pull the entire engine out and replace the motor mounts with the GroupN setup. Makes it much easier to install both.

You don't have to pull the motor, just jack it up by the headers after you unbolt the motor mount. 14mm ratcheting wrench makes it easier to take the old mounts off. After you replace the mounts follow killer b's instructions and put the nuts on backwards and let the motor down on them for the rest of the install.

I know everyone says to run a catless uppipe for reliability, my question is do you have to have a tune after that to make it run properly? I'm new to the whole tuner thing, this is my 1st turbo car, 2nd Subaru, but the Outback is the wifes, so it stays stock. I have no mods, just trying to keep it running as long as I can prior to having to rebuild the motor, which will probably have to happen at some point.

I'm running the stock pan with the KillerB pickup and baffle. The main reason to upgrade to a KillerB pan from a perfectly good stocker is if you're tracking the car.

The write-up on the KillerB website is the same one I've been emailing people. As stated above, it's not too hard of a project. Just don't over-torque the pan bolts when reinstalling. They take very little force.

I wish I came across this thread a long time ago!!! To date I have done just about all of these. Of course only after they broke and I found out the hardway along with a bit of troubleshooting... cause I didnt bother to search for this awesome reliability thread.

Last weekend i added;

1) Killer B pick-up and baffel. The pick up was in good shape... replaced it anyway.

2)04 sti uppipe

3) whiteline end links. Broke mine over the winter. Lots of fun!

I had oil starvation. .. had the turbo rebuilt and I will be putting it back in this weekend. Turbo banjo filter looked in good shape... through it in the garbage anyway.

230,000 km

Stage 2
