Classifying a V8 as "outdated" and "thirsty" doesn't make sense in my opinion. The "outdated" part can be countered by also saying that they are a bit more simple and easier to fix than a boosted counter part. Also, "performance" is thirsty regardless of whether it comes in a larger v8 or a turbo / twin turbo 4/6cyl motor--you mash that right pedal and your gas mileage is gonna suck when you are pushing 400hp. Turbo / boosted vehicles seem to be gaming the EPA tests a bit right now which makes them seem a less thirsty, but take them out into the real world and they are pretty similar it seems. There was some talk about Kia and Hyundai not being able to shake their old stigma. I think they've shaken the stigma about being totally shitty and unreliable cars--they are building good value cars for the money that aren't going to leave you stranded. But damn, I hopped into my sister-in-law's 2016 Hyundai Tucson the other day and man that thing feels like a total pile of shit. No comparison to something like a Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV-4.

Same. I also used a legacy driveshaft on my OBXT. No issues.

Should I sell or recycle stock DP
BarManBean replied to EatingInternet's topic in Fourth Generation Legacy (2005 - 2009)
It's illegal to sell them for reuse unless you recertify them. It's not illegal to sell them for scrap except in certain states. Sometimes. Although I also sometimes buy them on eBay for less than scrap value. -

I have no real opinion on what you *should* do, but if you decide to sell it I pay $120 for the pair of cat converters from stock downpipes. Hit me up -
"Bullet Proof" TMIC Kits
BarManBean replied to BarManBean's topic in Turbo Powertrains (2.0GT, 2.5GT, 2.5XT)
OK. Large batch of material is cut and ready for machine shop. I'll get it over there this week or beginning of next. As soon as it is at the shop, I'll open up ordering for the number of kits being produced. If it gets anywhere close to filling out, I'll prep more material and drop it off when I pick up the first round from the shop. Thanks to everyone that continues to express interest, I'm sorry for the delays and lack of communication. -

Hey folks, I still have material sitting in my garage, but encourage you to buy what you can find that's available. I've struggled with whether there is continued interest, but you guys keep coming and folks are definitely still interested. I'll try to dig through my emails over the weekend to supply instructions / design details for anyone hoping to make their own, and with my garage finally cleaned up I'll update after this weekend whether material will actually be ready to go to the machine shop. -
Yup. My 6mt swap was largely done to be able to run a slightly larger "stock" clutch--the exedy version. It was a great feeling clutch and the whole transmission just felt completely different, in a fantastic way. If you want my own "recipe", replace all the stock bushings except only use 2 of the 4 "u-joint" bushings from TurnInConcepts. All 4 makes it a bit too stiff, at least from my bench testing. I replaced all the other bushings and the car shifted in a very "snick snick" fashion without any unnecessary NVH.

Goob's OBXT
BarManBean replied to goob_os101's topic in Third Generation Subaru Outback (2004 – 2009)
I get what you're saying, but the problem is more likely that he simply lives in Northern Virginia. Traffic here blows, and if you are using an LGT / OBXT as a commuter car around here you are going to see about 18mpg, even on a dialed in protune. I've owned 3 of these cars, 2 MTs and a 5EAT, stock and modified, and they all get about the same when running around town and commuting. If you get out on the highway for a long trip, sure you start to see 25+ mpg, but not as a commuter in this area. -

I guess I get to post in this thread. OBXT with all the bolt-on's is gone, has been replaced by a 2015 F-150 3.5L Ecoboost twin turbo. Completely different, but my needs / wants have changed and I wanted something that could comfortably tow over 5k lbs. My OBXT probably got around 18-19mpg on 93 octane (about a $0.60-$0.80 cost over 87 octane) and my truck seems to get about 16mpg on 87 octane, so that's about a wash in my mind without doing any match. The tech in the truck absolutely demolishes the Subaru, it is what it is--10yrs of advancement. The subaru wagon was awesome--6mt wagon with over 300hp to the wheels, hard to beat--but the capability and utility of the truck along with the creature comforts is just insane. I miss the handling of the wagon, but other than that I have moved on. I'll pick up something small in the future maybe--miata, s2000, older m3, i dunno--and maybe mod it for auto-x. For now, I'm pretty happy
