What did you do to your 4th gen. Legacy today? Vol - 10

Recommended Posts

Got my full ETS Front mount kit in with gaskets needed, Getting re-tune and should be solid. I will post some pics up of the kits here so you all can see it. I wanted the best fitting kit, and paid for it. Getting it all done on may 9th.

In the meant time My other 2013 NA legacy had a coolant leak I could not run down, I spent days looking for it. I thought it was the water pump or lower coolant hose. I had the care all in the air and was about to tear it apart and said screw this. My tuner could not get me in for weeks so I got the hook up at the dealer but still had to drop 1k that included getting a new key coded.

It was the coolant hose on top of the manifold that was bad, they showed it to me, and I got it all fixed. I didn't want to do dealer but with kids, life and work plus my knee's hurt from the the garage floor it was worth it lol.

What is the HVAC unit?

It is the whole box under the dash, here shown as 72110. Includes the case, all actuators  with all related parts, and heater core If this were the only thing my wagon needed I might have dropped $500+ on it but I have rear brake lines, fuel tank and new SB sometime in the future.

3 full units for 2005 were available on East Coast yesterday per my parts guys.

If your heater core ever goes bad/gets gunked, this is a pretty good deal. By the time you've dug THAT out of the car, you might just as well get a new everything.

Replacing just the actuators requires tiny hands and all, but is possible without taking out the entire dash. Heater core, not so much luck...

I don't remember how stickler you are for things being OEM, but I will say that the Spectra fuel tank I got from Rock Auto was totally fine. Well put together and a perfect fit.

Significantly less expensive than getting the OE version of the same thing. I buy OE parts where I think they are warranted, but in this case, I couldn't justify the extra spend.

I have a brand new heater core that I have yet to install. I think I read somewhere you can technically slide it out the 'box'. May have seen this on a Tribeca forum.

Please let me/everyone know if that IS indeed possible when you get around to the install attempt.

I was under the impression that the only way to get ours (BP/BL) out was essentially removing the dash and the HVAC box. I don't get heat on the passenger side of my OBW, and I know this is because of the heater core "far side" getting jammed up with who knows what. Backflushing was minimally successful.

I don't care all that much right now, since I got another winter beater for the moment, but when I get around to selling eithe the Yaris or the Outback, that stuff has to work. Or maybe I don't care by then, we shall see, but I don't like things being broken, even if they aren't things I use much.

Same problem for me: barely any heat on passenger side and backflushing did not fix it. I think that's the video I saw a while back.

Huh. So the reason I always though it was a dash-out thing was the supply hoses, becuase you need to pull them through the firewall.

I won't discount this method, but i would be a little hesistant, just because if you bugger it up and can't get that seal again on the "new" core, you've ruined some expensive parts, but.... this is why JB weld is a thing, right?

Yeah, I admit I am also a little hesitant too. But I have the new core here and can tell these hoses can easily spin around. So these are not crimped that hard. The guy said that there are some orings too. So I think it should be OK. Although in my case, the dash will come out anyway since I am going to replace it. Cracked all over the place and shines if too hot.

Well I'm glad we had this little discussion. Fortunately I have no HVAC issues since replacing my blower motor BUT I do have two new heater hoses to replace in the near future. I think I'll take that opportunity to do some flushing and clean out any build up, if there is any.

So much fun at the track. Got the wagon down to a 1:52. As far as I can find the Subaru track record is a 1:46 so I got some goals to shoot for. Super happy with the new set up. Car is a bit more thirsty than I anticipated. Getting 3 mpg E85 on track. Went through a ton of fuel yesterday!

Well, as I feared, adding deadening and insulation to my hatch means it no longer opens itself until you get about halfway, even with new struts. If I give it a little momentum when I open it it'll go to the fully open position. I probably added 10lbs at least. It stays open without issue and does not close itself if you push down on the hatch until you get about halfway. This will likely mean that the struts will wear out sooner.

Still can't bring myself to shell out for OEM especially because they may have the same issue. I think the next step is to look around for struts on newer Subarus and see if they have the same mounts. If I get lucky, I'll find one that bolts on and was built for a heavier hatch.

It's a minor inconvenience for now and definitely a fair trade for cabin noise. Sitting in the cabin you'd never know that my exhaust is as loud as it is, even at freeway speeds.

Today I'm starting my clutch replacement so that should be fun. Hoping I can finish by tomorrow night.

Didn't start until almost 5 because I'm a dysfunctional person. It's a wonder that I can even get myself dressed in the morning.

I went until about 9 before calling it a night. Fluids drained, bolts removed, thingies and gizmos disconnected. The subframe bolts are loose. Just gotta remove the driveshaft and I should have the trans out within an hour tomorrow.

Feeling very grateful for my desert and west coast car (sorry midwesterners)

Yeah, yeah, yeah....

Not in the midwest, but I DID live in Oregon for a while as well as British Colombia. Being a car nerd in a big way, it was hard seeing how well everything survived out there, then having to come back home and look around at all the 10-12 year old cars that show rust all over sills + fenders.

Enjoy that lovely clean wagon dude!

yeap, this exactly how I did it on our Tribeca, and for the same reason - no heat on passenger side. I was a little nervous about leaks but this far (knocking on the wood) it's been fine.

Is this your garage?

I wish. I just have a very cool friend who lets me use his lift. I bring my own tools so packing those up sucks but my motivation to do my own work increases 10 fold when I have a lift to use.

It’s amazing how many friends you did not know you had appear when they find out you have a lift. Hah! ;)

Did you use a vacuum pump, or the two man “pump the pedal” method?

That Outback looks like mine!  Or would, if I had ever seen it on a lift.  Right now really wanting one, since my S4 is in need of a starter, and while cramming a V8 into a 4cyl car makes for some fun, it is a misery whenever you need to do work in there, especially on your back on the floor.  No leverage to break bolt torque, hard to shift to angle your arms into spaces, etc.  You are living the dream!

I recommend the vacuum pump method. I've also used the cheap one man bleeder kit. I vacuumed the living hell out of my lines when I did my flush and my car brakes like it was new.
