The bell housing should be 6 bolts right? I guess it was missing one.. So all that's left is just taking the downpipe off and undo the ground straps and the motor is free. I wonder while I have the starter out do the contacts on it since the car is almost at 230k

I have a fear of doing to many things at once. I would either replace the starter or wait until you know the engine starts before you throw another variable into the mix.

How hard was it to loosen the bigger bolts on the avcs? Small ones came out easy enough for me, but with the larger bolts I'm having a tough time holding the gear in one hand and wrench in the other. Gear either spins (as if it was on the car) or rotates (as if you were flipping it over). Then the bit pops out and boogers the bolt.

I was the opposite. Exhaust is what gave me hell. We tried 2 people approach(both grab the breaker bars and close them together like a bolt cutter) after Vise grips and timing belt took the teeth off the gear. other one wasn't coming out. I literally had the engine in my trunk going from dealership to shop and eventually they chisseled the bolt off.

what are you talking about the tamper torx bolts?

To take the cams off I used the HF Hex set for $6.99 and a cheater bar and I had no issues with the bolts.

btw engine is out however I was too tired to try and mess with getting the heads off so I squezed the whole motor in the trunk.. mind you I have a sedan.. I'm going to need a new oil fill tube and oil dipstick tube.

Looks like this guy was running the stock clutch? It's made by Sachs and has a Subaru part number but looks like I caught it just in time it's a bit worn.. This is making wonder if I need to go with the stage 2 clutch now.

Also I can't seem to get the DMFW off because it's rotated in a way that blocks all the bolts..

Can't see the picture here at work.

Just take a hammer and rotate the top piece till you can get the bit in there.

Someone else had the same issue and that's how they fixed it.

Wow, that's one dirty engine.

PM Underdog or m sprank or call Rey at http://www.AZPinstalls.com and ask them how to fix that FW.

Underdog can sell you a WRX SMFW and Spec 2 or 2+ clutch.

Tell him what you think you want and ask him for his advice, buy what he tells you to use.

I replaced my FW bolts with OEM FW bolts for a 2007 Legacy GT.

See my whp and torque #'s, my Spec 2 clutch only lasted 50,000 miles.

The Spec 2 was smoother and better then the OEM clutch, the Spec 2+ has the same light pedal but act's more like a high performance clutch.

FWIW, Spec recommends a 2+ for these cars.

I would never put anything less in one.

I expecting more towards 90,000 out of my Spec 2+, time will tell.

If your at near stock HP the Spec 2 should be fine, But as I said, I would not put anything less than a 2+ in these cars.

Really the 2+ is not that hard to drive. It sometimes chatter's but not more then the old stock one did. This is my second 2+, this ones much better then the one put in at 72,000 miles back in Jun 07.

Took the heads off this evening now I can check the stuff on the heads and get the heads resurfaced and hot tanked.. lots of glitter in the oil pan but that was to be expected.. pictures later on still haven't taken the flywheel off but it's not that important right now.. I think I will keep this block for a spare and rebuild it providing the block cast wont break like my old EJ25d did.
