Mega Users seabass07 Posted March 28, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted March 28, 2014 Just ordered a grain mill and 105lbs of grain. Grain was at cost through a local brewery my friend works at. My brewing addiction just got a whole lot cheaper!

HipsterDoofus
Boulevard Dark Truth. Best before 5/2014. My ass it it. This tastes like burnt chocolate and butthole

lgtftw
I brewed a saison beer last night. I think the Keggle is overkill for a 5 gallon batch. What do you guys do with your spent grains?

Mega Users seabass07 Posted March 30, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted March 30, 2014 Throw them away or compost them. Once I get my compost bin set up, I'll compost them.
lgtftw
I think that is probably the best thing to do. Now to make a compost bin although I'm trying to keep deer as far away from my garden as I can.
Mega Users seabass07 Posted March 31, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted March 31, 2014 Your neighbors will love you as well. The stench from composting grain is lovely.
DeltaNu1142
I lived in an apartment upstairs from a brewery in college. Once a month, my place smelled like burnt Grape Nuts. Tits mcgee
lgtftw
Your neighbors will love you as well. The stench from composting grain is lovely. Ohhh, never mind then. I don't want to offend my neighbors, it's bad enough that I have two bad ass kids.
DeltaNu1142
Serious question... I don't feel like going so far as to compost. Could I just dump grains into my hedges as fertilizer... or would that bring unwanted attention from animals? It's mostly squirrels I'm concerned about. Mega Users seabass07 Posted March 31, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted March 31, 2014 Nope. I've already looked into that. While it's composting, it actually draws nitrogen out of the soil, so it will do more harm than good. It needs to be composted first.

SneakyFast
Chickens and hogs love spent grains. You can make bread or dog treats from spent grain as well. Mine goes in the trash though
Mega Users seabass07 Posted March 31, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted March 31, 2014 Yea...spent grain bread is not very good. The husk material gives it a horrible texture. I do have a friend with chickens. Not a bad idea.

Mega Users seabass07 Posted April 1, 2014 Mega Users Share Posted April 1, 2014 Just finished brewing the first of several ridiculous IPA's. I've got some hops that have been in the freezer for over a year that I need to use. This one has 15oz in the boil and I'll be adding 5oz dryhops for a 5gal batch. I strained the wort to get all of that hop material out, so I'll only have to worry about 5oz of pellets in there. As soon as fermentation slows down, I'll dump in the dry hops and wait 5 days before coldcrashing and kegging.

DeltaNu1142
Did this to my 32-qt aluminum kettle... Finding the gallon marks: http://i.imgur.com/mkSxbRx.jpg Masking the reverse stencils: http://i.imgur.com/YQsi9az.jpg Finished: http://i.imgur.com/6Sgpire.jpg I lost some contrast when I used a scotch-brite pad to get rid of some stubborn adhesive, so I probably won't do that again.
