got some new stuff for engine R&R

Recommended Posts

Took 3% fuel out, adjusted the cams, adjusted boost. Car feels much more responsive now and smoother.

Took just over a hour. We do loops from exit 65 to 70 on Rt84.

Care to elaborate how you did that? Always learning here.

I guess you missed this post. Mike did it while doing the street tune.

I'm meeting with Mike tomorrow morning to have him clean up or trouble shoot my slight stumble at part throttle acceleration under boost.

I can lift a bit and the stumble seems to stop and the power increases a bit. I'm thinking it could be boost control, as I'm all stock in that area.

Here's his facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/TuningAlliance

he's also back on this forum. I guess he has a little more time now, he must have finish his projects around the house he bought.

He felt the stumble while getting on the highway in 3rd and 4th gear, he began making adjustments with the lap top. By the second time I rolled into 3/4-7/8 throttle, it was a little better. It kept getting better and better as he made adjustments.

I'm assuming he must be able to adjust oil flow to the cams, isn't that how the Variable valve timing works ?

He's the guy with the brains, that's what I pay him for.

I did see that post actually. I was just under the impression that he actually mechanically adjusted something related to the camshafts in under one hour (e.g. valve clearance, etc...). So I was like "wow, How did they do that?"

No it's all done from the Lap Top. It's truely amazing what can be done, he was saying if he had a wide band to plug in he could get it even better.

He also hinted that the 5th gen GT's have the same timing flaw in the oem map, just not as bad as these cars do.

interesting.

Thought it would be, I wonder if it's talked about in the 5th gen forums or Tuning forum.

Anyway's he did say I should get a little better mpg now too. That's always a good thing.

  • 1 month later...

8500 miles on the short block, dash is reading 26.5mpg on the drive back from VT today, This was it's second weekend trip skiing.

I've noticed this engine has more of the cold piston noise then the original block had, but once warmed up it's as quiet as the Spec's engine is always.

I just drive it easy till it begins to warm up.

I wish my shortblock lasted. Gonna have to do a rebuild on it already. 3900 miles on a 2012 ej257 and its #4 piston go boom again. :( And thats with equal length headers.

Who did the Tune ?

A few other guy's have had there ej257's have piston issues too.

And this is why we NEVER suggest rebuilding with OEM pistons. We've seen this issue happen time and time again. My 05 LGT went through 2 motors/piston sets in less than 100k miles and it was bone stock. My 11 STi had a motor replaced at 25k miles and it was bone stock as well.

:(

In your opinion, is it a quality control issue with the OEM pistons or the OEM tune or maybe both. I & few others are over 200k on original motors & plenty over 100k with no issues. For me, I ran stock tune for 60k, Cobb, stage 1-93 map to 174k & currently run custom stage 2 map from Tuning Alliance.

Good question. We have seen cars like yours with stock tunes last up into the high 100s etc with no issues. Have you ever tracked your car and or drove it at high RPMs for any extended period of time? For example 30 minutes on a canyon road really giving it a workout?

My guy feeling is that it is the QC of the pistons themselves because there is no easily deciphered pattern of the failures.

Yes, drag strip & mountain roads. More like 10-15 minute workout. When I'm in the twisted mountain roads I don't like using my brakes. I use the motor's RPM's from 3k to 7k. Also have 120 mile round trip to work daily. Shifting is usually around 5500 rpms.

Plus I tow with it.

I just mite not driving it hard enough to break my pistons.:lol: I think I do drive it hard.

Well that further supports the argument that it is QC issue. Although we've seen cars dyno at full power despite having cracked ringlands. So unless you've had a leakdown or compression test done, you may have a cracked ringland for you know.

IIRC, did compression test at 174k, before I want stage 2+. My test: 1) 145psi, 2)150psi, 3)145psi, 4)147psi.
