Max Capacity
They'll be fine once nobody can see them. Really, don't they serve a purpose there? Or is it better to buy the DEI heat wrap and wrap the whole manifold ? I did paint the oil cooler crossover tube with 1200F paint to hopefully keep it from rusting like the old one. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4727.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4767.jpg 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
I did have one that was rattling, I found out what was causing it and have replaced the bolt as well as replacing some of the others that i had to cut off with nuts, bolts and washers. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
Got the crush washers today. I'm good on the hoses, so I don't need any more of them. I put the washers in and put the up pipe on. Then had to eat and go food shopping with the GF. now just need the weather clear, that should be Thursday before I can work on it again. Talked to the machine shop more today. I asked what the valves looked like. They said they were not used to seeing Subaru heads in that good of shape. The valves were in great shape and didn't much work. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
your lgt has monster wheel gap.  Amazing how high it sits with no engine in it. It's raining out now so no work today or tomorrow. I may take 1/2 vacation day Thursday and work on it a bit. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
Got a break in the weather today, in two hours after work I got the up pipe positioned so the turbo can be as far to the passenger side as possible (want to move the tmic to the right). Then I dropped one of the turbo studs down the up pipe...tried to roll the engine on the stand but it would not fall out. So take the heat shield off so I can get a wrench on the nuts and pull the up pipe back off, take a magnet tool and fish out the stud. I learned to put a rag in the up pipe. Hint to other DIY'ers. After that I got the intake manifold on and had to check on old pictures to see how the air/oil separator was routed and connected to the PCV. I need to stop by my son house and grab the tap set and clean up the threads on the up pipe before I install the turbo. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4779.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4778.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4777.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4776.jpg I want to play with the turbo and tmic position before I install the engine back in the car. In hopes of keeping the tmic off the clutch reservoir. It's been rubbing since I installed the vf52. I didn't with the vf40 so it must have been me not holding the vf52 to the right. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
Thanks for saying that. It is a big job, I do loose sleep over it just going over everything that needs to be done. Hoping I didn't forget something and trying to figure out what to do next and going over what still needs to be done. Plus I'm also thinking about paintpollz, thread about his intake leak and whats the easy way for him to fix it. I'll be adding to his thread in the intake and exhaust forum in a few. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
I got the turbo on the today. Fought to tmic for about 3 hours, dropped it and broke the BOV, new one will be here early next week. I did stop by the dealership today to get some nuts and bolts for the turbo to up pipe. The ones I had were not in the best shape. I did clean up the threads of the up pipe with a 10mm 1.25 tap after that the new bolts went in nicely. The nuts and bolts were free. He said they appreciate my business. Oh I did fine the secret to putting the inlet tube on the turbo, I removed that 6mm hex bit bolt on the front of the intake manifold, that allowed the tube to move freely. With all the studs removed from the up pipe, once the oil return line slipped onto the return tube from the head the inlet tube slipped right on the turbo with a small wiggle. Max Capacity
Don't worry, I was just fitting the tmic on the engine before putting it in to make sure it wouldn't be a nightmare to do with the engine in the car.  I realize you need it off to install the engine, it would be impossible to hook things up like the tranny, starter, brake booster hose, etc. Tomorrows plan is to sit the engine on the back of the pickup truck bed on a old tire, then install the flywheel and clutch and put the engine in the car. I think I'll loosen the intake manifold at the 8 TGV bolts and try and slide the manifold to the left side to give me a little room so the tmic lines up on the turbo bolt holes easier. I have the TB hose set so the tmic shows about 90% of the two bolt holes. I still need to push the tmic to the left to get the bolts in. I think I positioned the manifold to right of the bolt holes when installing it. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
Hope to have it running next week. Max Capacity
Next issue, I need to remove the bolt that is in the bottom hole drivers side on the tranny. The block comes with studs, and I tried double nutting it but it will not come out. I have pictures will post them later. I'll pull the axle and remove the bolt. Have the engine hanging in the engine bay. Doing lunch now. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. HAMMER DOWN
Got away to heat it up. Just enough to get some movement between the AL case & steel stud. Soak it with BP Blaster, double nut it & start turning it. Mine came off by just soaking it with BP Blaster, double nut & using my 1\2" drive impact. Mike Mileage:331487 Retired/Sold
Max Capacity
I popped the axle out, it was easy, I maybe didn't even have to un-nut it from the hub. I did my hit the end of the axle with a 2x4 and a 5lb hammer to pop the axle back in. With the axle out about a inch the bolt came out. Here is the bolt hitting the axle. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4789.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4790.jpg Here some pictures of the clutch install http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4784.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4785.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4787.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4786.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4788.jpg Heres the PITA back in the car. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4791.jpg  I also used bolts nut studs for the up pipe and turbo http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4783.jpg It was a long day today. The engine was a Mother to get it to mate to the tranny. I ended up jacking up the back of the car to get a better angle, that seemed to help a lot. Alone with that, I removed the bolts holding the turbo to the up pipe so it could slide and not keep hitting the tranny case. To be honest, it took about 3 hours of fighting. Starter, DP, A/C compressor, fuel lines, heater hoses, brake booster hose, ground wire to drivers side head, exhaust to DP, front and rear O2 sensors, are all hooked up. The car is back on the ground and the pushed the clutch pedal in and feels just like the old clutch. Here's where we had our dinner tonight, a real red neck tailgating picnic. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4792.jpg Edited May 20, 2012 by Max Capacity 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Max Capacity
Got it all hooked up, all the fluids in expect for enough coolant to finish topping it off and have extra, headed out to get some now and will take the BOV off the Spec install it on the stock tmic and start it up when it cools off later this afternoon. I have the right front corner jacked up so I can watch the coolant burp in the turbo feed tank. The new radiator hoses are a pita to get the OEM clamps over once the hose is on. I just used screw type hose clamps. Updated my sig too. Edited May 20, 2012 by Max Capacity 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
