xt2005bonbon
Really though, is it the piston fault to 'fall apart on its own' or is it the injector's fault not doing its job properly, which in turns messes up the piston? Or is it the stock tune's fault? Kinna like blaming the VF40 being junk when really it usually fails due to oil starvation. Well since some of the pistons last 200k miles, and I'm assuming the injectors and tune have not changed on them, I would lean toward QC of the OEM Pistons. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Scooby2.5
Crawford and others seem to think its the tune.........I tend to agree. Those pistons are not going to be so "brittle" that they break without some sort of knock events.
xt2005bonbon
I read this article yesterday. Though more than a year old, it is a fairly good read. http://www.importtuner.com/tech/impp_1103_subaru_ej_series_engine_tech/viewall.html
Scooby2.5
Yep thats partly what I was referring to. I started a thread with that article and it was pretty heated pretty quick.... LOL!! I might add to my post above, reeeeealllly CRAPPY fuel throughout the country could be partially to blame as well.

Care to share the link? Or I guess I can search all the threads you've started. I am actually thinking of creating a poll for people who've had a cracked ringland. I want to know which cylinder got affected. I am wondering if there's one that's mostly affected (like #4). I remember bmx mentioning that cylinder #4 is the last one getting fuel and can run lean more often than others. But I am not sure.

OutbackXT05
Ya thats probably what mine is because it definently wasnt the tune. I got rid of the tune asap once my motor was replaced.
AZP Installs
Crawford and others seem to think its the tune.........I tend to agree. Those pistons are not going to be so "brittle" that they break without some sort of knock events. No knock events on any of my 3 engines. Also if it were the tune, which I'm assuming is the same on all stock engines, we would see them all failing, but not all of them fail. I think you see the sentiment of it being the tune, coming from, TUNERS... They could be a little biased. A stock car should be able to run without issue from the factory though. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. I don't understand why folks feel they need to buy a new hunk of metal. The block of a LGT is the same block as the STi motor. I feel it is a waste of good $ to put it toward another block (which is a re-furbished block to begin with as they don't sell "new" blocks). -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Cause if i buy a new(or not)Ej257 i can already have the pistons, i don't need to get it honed and cleaned out and measured so that i can order the new pistons, and also the bearing will be new. i Don't have to mess with those and the rods well they are all basically same rods. Don't forget that the OEM pistons are notorious for cracking the #4 ringlands. I will bet for the same $ as buying a new/reman shortblock you could have your stock block torn down, new bearings, and crank put in along with forged pistons. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. HAMMER DOWN
IIRC, Max said that it was cheaper to buy a new\re-furbished block (around $1800). That his engine builder couldn't re-furbished his old block for the cost of a new\re-furbished block from Subaru. Mike That may be correct but one needs to take into consideration the fact that you are still getting the soft OEM pistons. We've found several motor builders who can beat the price of the OEM Short Block with the upgraded bearings and pistons, or at least not exceed the cost of the OEM SB. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts.
