Oils that our cars DON'T eat?

Penzoil Platinum for 25k miles (subaru oem blue oil filter)

Penzoil Ultra for 12k miles(maybe half a quart of consumption every oci of 3k) (puraltor pure one oil filter from here on out)

Penzoil Platinum for 8k cause i couldn't find ultra anymore in my area

Now using Rotella T6 5w40 for the last 700 miles and I gotta say car seems to run smooth on it.

Platinum seemed to be heavier than the Ultra even though both were 5w30

my car burns rotella, not a lot of it, but about a quart every 3000 miles

Post from 2010, and these guys have some serious products. Terry Dyson directed me to these guys two years ago.

Why did you switch from the OEM filter to the pure one? Was there something you like better about it over the Subaru filter?

Just wondering because I'm planning on switching from the pure one to the Subaru filter my next oil change.

I switched since at first it was included in my oil special package with Penzoil Platinum. Then i also liked the reviews from BTOG and it was also a larger filter.

Well I do hope my car doesn't consume the Rotella but even if it did at this point I am pretty convinced my car feels smoother then it did with the platinum. I just curious if anyone noticed any issues running rotella in the winter?

I use Rotella 5w40 year round.

My consumption is negligible with it at 110k miles. Altho I drove 600 miles in 24 hours two weeks ago and saw not quite a 1/2 quart drop, otherwise there was almost no loss over the previous 2k miles. Lots of short trips, stop and go city with limited highway driving, def severe conditions.

Been using it for 60k miles over three different turbo Subarus, and will have a UOA with it in 700 miles. Puralator filters.

Nice thanks Booze, Since I do mostly all stop and go traffic 20 mile round trip to work. Temps reach -20f degrees here in Albany but also get up to high 90's in the summer. So I will def be able to report back after this winter how that goes but I feel better about running it now for sure.

-20* is colder then it ever gets here in PA, but you still should be fine considering Subaru recommends 5w30. My biggest concern would be changing whatever oil you use every 3k miles and no more, esp with the cold temps and short trip driving. Really tough on oil, and Subaru is notorious for fuel dilution in cold conditions with severe driving.

I'd also look into Mobil 1's 0w40 if I were you. Expensive, but good reviews or at least better reviews then their 5w30 & 10w30.

Yeah i will see how it goes with this in the cold. I always change it at 3-3.5k intervals(3.5 when its just too cold to go outside). If it ends up having weird issues i will just go back to my trusty platinum which is not bad i just like the way it runs on rotella better. Mobil i just have a fear from reading so many people with consumption issues.

That's because most people that have consumption issues with Mobil1 are usually running the Resource Conserving 5W-30. Their 10W-30/10W-40 High Mileage, 0W-40, and Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 are all very robust oils. In fact, the TDT is thicker at all temps than RT6. People should compare RT6 to TDT, not to the regular Resource Conserving 5W-30. :)

Amsoil 5W-30 Signature Series, .5 quart down over 4,500 miles with HEAVY foot. I think I'll stick to it.

Great stuff, we've had wonderful success with the Amsoil.

I purchased my car with about 113k miles on it and the previous owner used Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic with fram filters and he got the car around 70-80k I believe. I don't know what the origional owner used but I use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic with a factory Nissan 15208-65f0c filter every 2500-3000 miles. I have 131k miles on the car with stage one almost its whole life. Factory turbo still rockin and no oil consumption besides a small leak at the oil cooler seal I'm about to replace before it starts getting cold.

That's why I replace it always before 3000 miles. Typically it's 2000-2800 depending on when I acquire enough oil. I work at a shop and when we do synthetic oil changes its with Mobil 1 and we don't have it in bulk. So when the car takes 4.8 quarts the .2 quarts + whatever oil is left in the bottles after dumping them in the car I keep them and drain it into one bottle tilli have enough, otherwise it gets thrown out. When I change my oil it's never black but a little darker than when it went in. Yes it's a wast to do it that early but who cares when it's free.

Yeah any oil changed at 2000-2800 mile intervals will work fine. 2011+ Subaru turbo cars require synthetic and have a 7500 mile interval.

We run Blackstone on a lot of our oils and the Amasoil and Motul come out beautiful.

I have a UOA from Terry Dyson showing it.

Which one? The GF4 or GF5 version? Amazingly, here's a uoa on the GF5 version and it actually stayed in grade.

It's only one uoa for this particular application, but some the new GF5 oils are showing good results. There are a few good GF5 Ultra and Platinum uoa's there as well. The jury's still out though, IMO, since there are so few uoa's on GF5 Mobil1. There are no improvements for wear control or oil volatility for GF5. Pennzoil is using Group IV PAO base stocks in Ultra.

Liking the zinc level on the X-clean!! I thought it was too high at first (lab error), but then I found out there are no zinc limitations on ACEA C3 oils, only phosphorus.
