24 hr Beater Race

Got a decent amount done on the "racecar" today. Cleaned it up a bit, removing most of the paint ball gack and spray paint "graffiti". She looks much more presentable now. The paint is pretty effed, but now looks the part of a $500 POS rather than something we beat up on. Pulled out the underhood A/C components, checked and cleaned the plugs and removed the airbox resonator. We are going to fab up a ghetto ram-air intake for the airbox tomorrow and flush the tranny out with fresh fluid.

Still need to work out the brake, wheel and tire situation. Any idea if we can get some sponsored parts there, or if anyone has some stock 05+ LGT stuff they would like to donate to the cause? :icon_wink The tubing for the roll bar is going to be ordered this week and fabbed/installed soon after.

Update: I have managed to obtain a few upgrades for us at fairly nominal cost. The racecar is now sitting much better on 02 WRX struts with SPT springs. Much tighter feeling now. A tranny cooler intended for an RV has been installed. SnoDork and sleepin gt have generously donated their stock LGT brakes and I have a tentative sponsor for race compound pads. I have also located a reasonably priced set of 17" wheels to fit over our new brakes and will also be trying to get some discounted or sponsored tires as well. The roll bar will likely be constructed this Friday. We might actually redo the exhaust, because I took it for a quick run up and down the street yesterday and came back deaf. The wide open pipes were are running are brutally loud at WOT.

I have also reserved 4 hotel rooms at the Best Western in Tracy. Got a nice group rate of $65/night. That is enough to sleep 8+ people so we should be ok there. If we end up with more people I'll see if I can add more rooms at the same rate.

Thank You Paul... You have done alot of work and it is appreciated.

O, when can we get together and go over the budget, fees, collect money from drivers, dish out work to other people, such as myself.... etc...

I'll let you guys know what our final cost tally is for parts that we paid for. Yim is paying for the cage materials and fab, I figured that the rest of us could split the rest of the costs evenly (ball joints, CV boot, exhaust materials, intake materials, suspension, tranny cooler, new belt, wheels/tires etc...) We are right around $500 right now, but of course I'm trying to get sponsors to help us you with free or discounted parts as much as possible. If the driver's figure on about $100-$150 each that should be about right, excluding entry fees and travel expenses.

Oh my F'ing GOD!:eek::eek::lol::lol::lol::lol: Was that really needed!?!?:eek::eek: Although I am surprised that little Dan's legs actually touch the ground when he's sitting on the throne. I guess he must have ordered a custom lower toilet for the shop :icon_wink:lol:

Now that Ian has got the pictures rolling here are some quick shots of the racecar

When she arrived, she was a very nice condition (too nice for this race really) 200K mile car. Clean enough, but certainly not perfect.

Well enough of that. Here's what the inside looked like after 3 guys tore at it for a couple of hours:

Here's what came out of the interior:

Now on to the ghetto fabulous mods. My favorite is the Home Depot ram air intake. Amazing what you can do with a $1 funnel, some dryer duct and a couple of PVC elbows... oh can't forget the zip ties, silicone and self tapping screws!:lol:

On to the exhaust. We're on a tight budget to stay under the rules, so this is what we came up with for $20. Amazingly it made power, not amazingly it is ear splittingly loud!:p

Here is the vastly improved stance via our $65 WRX struts and SPT springs:

Now on to the dyno graph. Yes we actually dynoed the car. The baseline run was aborted because we did that run right after gutting the car and left the gauge cluster unplugged. That appeared to piss off the ECU since it invoked a fuel cut at around 4300 rpm. Regardless you can clearly see that the ghetto 'zaut and funnel intake did wonders. Remember this car was only rated at 165 hp at the fly 9 years and 200K miles ago.

You are welcome to roll up there with us. The race is on July 7-8. Crew members with pit access are charged $75 by the race organizers. If you really want to go, you'll have to book a room in a hotel as well too, unless you want to bunk it on a roll-away in a room.

HOLY CRAP!!!! Almost 30+ HP from just those 2 Mods??

AWESOME!!!! :D

That's a little misleading. Had we been able to run the car to redline while stock it probably would have made a little over 100 whp. I figure the gains as being closer to 20 whp. Still not too shabby for about $30 in parts.

It's my wife's birthday that weekend, so I can't promise to be able to help much. But, I'm hoping to stop by for a bit and say hi..

I guess if a driver needs to cancel at the last moment, I'd love to drive, but.. I know everyone else probably wants to drive too.. :-)
