Oil Change Instructions! With Pics!

I need one of those cause I hate no matter how much paper I put down, its still getting everywhere. I feel porn star dirty every time cause it's always in my hair, ear on my face, and my shirt!

I do, I do LOL! I don't even look at it after 3 turns of the drain plug. When I had a lift I could simply run but with ramps it's not as easy. Once you get 3 drops on you there is no point in running anymore.

Yep, but a new washer is needed, if you took the Fumoto from one Subaru to the next, as I did with my wife's off-lease WRX, and her then-new '09 FXT. :)

 

The Fumoto has a composite washer built-in. It shouldn't need to be replaced, as it doesn't depend on crush to seal.

Get a valve! I don't even bother having a towel handy, no paper laid down. Oil goes from the pan to the valve to a tube into a milk jug. Presto, no oil anywhere it isn't supposed to go.

I'll get one by next change. I just did one like 100 miles ago. I have other projects at hand to deal with. The one with tube(nipple end) was the more expensive one right?

http://www.fumotousa.com/ - They've got a regional dealer list, but I honestly don't remember who I got it from...a part of me wants to say that I ordered DIRECTLY from them, but that may have been in the beginning, when they were small enough that they still sold, direct.

Hi guys.

I'm new to the Subaru community.

Can you confirm that the Fumoto valve model F105 is the right one for a 2010 2.5i Legacy Limited.

Also, what is the size of the Oil filter socket needed to remove the oil filter ?

You should be able to check with your local Subaru service department about the diameter and pitch of the standard oil drain plug for a 2010. While I would guess it's the same as previous years, I wouldn't assume it for certain. Not many of us have 2010s yet, so we probably can't add insight.

 

As for the oil filter socket - you really don't need one. While the first change can be tough because they seem to use gorillas to install everything at the factory, if you're doing your own changes you should only hand-tighten the filter. It will be plenty secure and that way, you can get the filter off by hand at the next change.

 

For getting a stuck oil filter off, there are several tricks. Of course you can use a filter wrench, but many don't tighten down small enough for our tiny OEM filters. My favorite is to simply use a pipe wrench ("monkey" wrench). Works very well. I've also heard of stabbing the filter with a large screwdriver to get leverage on it, but that's messy, and it includes the risk that, if you still can't get it off, you've just made your car un-driveable.

I may feel funny about the ride height of my Outback

 

But I laugh all the way to the laptop because I can change my engine and transmission/differential oil without raising the car :D

 

Also, I've been reusing the crush washer. My Volvo said the same thing about replacing the crush washer each oil change. I would flip em over and use them once more. My crush washer is on it's third at the least batch of oil without leaks. I torque the plug to 22ft-lbs (going into aluminum)

I did it but noticed I was loosing oil between changes.

I can squeeze under my lowered wagon to change the oil still - it's a bit tight but definitely doable.

 

Regarding the crush washer - I wouldn't bother reusing those. It's not crushing again each time, designed for single use - they're cheap regardless. Also, they're not shaped symmetrically either - I always use a new one, oriented the same way as the last one came off.

I did my 1st oilchange with the Fumoto valve yesterday, went much smoother than the last time, lol. Using the beer cup trick I was able to get it done with no drips! I will definitely take the car for a rip before draining the oil next time though, with the car cold the oil flowed very slowly compared to last time.

 

I can't for the life of me figure out where to jack my car up from! I've been using the frame rail back far enough that I can still get a jackstand in front of the jack, and this works alright. I thought I had read somewhere that there was a central jacking point under the car though, and I can't find it anywhere. I have a 2.5i auto if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the link! I tried to find that spot but couldn't see it, I have a better idea where to look for it now, so I'll give it another try. It would be the same distance from either side of the car I suppose right?

 

Edit: in the pic the guy is jacking from the front of the car it looks like, I have the bellypan tray there which could explain why I couldn't see this jacking plate. Does anyone with the bellypan use this jacking point?

it is the same distance from either side of the car. is the pan after market? i didn't think anyone but the gt's had these. maybe if you get a chance post up a pic of your car and we can help point it out. look behind the oil pan....and between the exhaust. it should be the only brace going from to back of the car and not side to side. good luck!;)
