  1. (Didn't seem worth starting a new thread) Off the cuff, does anyone know if there is a difference between the L and R rear wheel speed sensors aside from the shape of the bracket that attaches to the trailing arm. I mean, they are clearly shaped differently but I would assume the sensor itself if the same thing, at least in how it functions? Just curious because I thought I would grab one off the parts car that's in my driveway, and some previous person decided re-tapping holes was too much work, so they just welded all the brackets for the sensors and e-brake stuff to the trailing arm!! I might just cut the brackets off and install the presumed functional sensor into the metal brackets in mine. I don't want to do any of this right now, really, since it is below zero C and slushy/snowy. Yay!
  2. Haha, yeah. Ontario life. I didn’t want to have to so it twice. I wish I had POR’d the gas tank tho. I used an inner fender/rocker paint, which, it turns out, melts when you get fuel on it. Only a problem when your pump seal leaks. Thankfully that’s never a problem with these cars…. Right?! At least the seams are well coated. I’ll hit them with fluid film this summer as well. Live and learn.
  3. Also, POR-15 makes a direct to metal clear coat as well, although I don’t know how it would compare on price to that stuff. I painted my subframe with it when I sandblasted and swapped it, and that shit is serious. Hard to get a nice smooth coat (using $1 chip brush… hah!!) but once it dries? Forget about it. Buy new parts if you need to refinish it.
  4. Mmmmmm RD400…. I wants one of those. There used to be a place not too far from me that did vapour blasting/honing. Think they’re gone now, which is a shame. I’d played with the idea of getting one and doing it out of my shed, for some extra cash, but I don’t think it would really ever become profitable, so I doubt it will happen. If they do the vapour blast with media. It can work wonders on the finish of aluminium. Doesn’t look polished, but suuuper clean.
  5. Like the stickers! Send it. T-shirts are definitely a great option, and if we’re going to go with one colour for all I’d also vote for anything but white. Charcoal would be great, heathered grey etc… Of the hundred odd t-shirts in my closer, I don’t think I have a single white one…. Hah!
  6. Anyone in your area do vapour honing? Sometimes it’s amazing how much small amounts of dirt in the aluminium make it look like crap/make the pitting worse. It has also been my observation that the finish from the castings on our valve covers is only okay, at best. When I did some of the ali valve/motor cover for my old Norton, some were hours apiece with 2-3 different grade of wet sanding to get past the oxidation and pitting… and these are parts that were like… 2”x3”!!! Personally, I think I am going to go with matte or wrinkle black on mine if/when the come out.
  7. That’s annoying. Is your plan to get new spring clamps for all the hoses, or re-use the ones you had on there? I ask mainly because while I also don’t much care for screw clamps, the climate here eats spring steel clamps plenty fast, so I’ve switched over to mainly stainless steel Fuel injection style band clamps for everything. Just wondering if I’m doing myself a disservice them. I could just never be asked to go get more spring clamps from the dealer…
  8. Are there coles notes on why not to use them? Was it the etching marks, or something more about their profile that he didn't like? I assume that meant you're staying on stock cams for now?
  9. Cool. I avoid the GTA generally, so I guess the chances of bumping into you are slim. Pretty much always take a minute to talk to anyone I see with a LGT. Hah!
  10. Give @JmP6889928 a minute. He's not lighting fast on responses here, but he will get to you. I have his (business, not personal) email and can ask if that's something he comfortable having passed out. His customer service when dealing with him was *very* fast tho, and he even called me just to check in on how my turbo was running a little while after I installed it. (Which he was also available to troubleshoot.)
  11. Looks like casting rubbish to me. I would think that unless it goes a while lot deeper than it looks, it’s harmless. That appears (from the photos only, so take it for what that’s worth?) to be surface damage only. Like a 1/10th of a mm of pitting? I would try to get a pick into that, and if you can’t, and arms don’t have any other evidence of porosity, then run ‘em.
  12. Sooo... not born in 90 then. I get it, that's cool. Being old and math aren't good friends.
  13. Seriously, funny not funny. I'm 42, and the latest advice I've been getting is to consider taking fibre suppliments and upping my water intake. Totally off topic, but jeebus.... Really? I was 25 yesterday. A couple days before that I was 10, and out fishing with my Dad, not a care in the world. EDIT: Had to google AARP. That does not translate into Canuck very well.
  14. Agreed dude. Noticed you're from Ontario. Whereabouts, if that isn't information you'd prefer to keep private. Always happy to meet more LGT tragics if the opportunity ever comes up.
  15. I'd take 2 each left and right wagons. I can't speak for him, but there is a good chance @tysparks81 is also coming along? We've not met in person, but have talked about getting together pre-meet to arrange for a combined toolkit and spares to get two ageing LGT' s from Ontario down to PA. Maybe even another non-member from Ontario as well, which would be good. Safety in numbers...
  16. I want to say my Dad brought me to the Sportmans show when I was.... 10? Maybe, likely younger. So, like '90-'91 or so? I remember a giant tank full of trout, probably Splake, in hindsight, and that I met Bob Izumi and got a floating keychain signed by him.... Never go back. (So they say, and as a world traveller in my youth, I kind of agree......) For the money, if that is CAD, I would consider trying to make friends with someone in the UK who would repackage and send internationally, if they lip doesn't work out. I had contacts there forever ago, and wish I still did for the same reasons. EDM parts for my ancient brit motorcycle would be sweet. Instead, I pay the premium to get stuff that's been imported. Any case, subaruoutback.org is awesome. Plenty of knowledge there, and there are some members that contribute both here and there. Especially the XT crowd, but it's all the same. I agree that the Subaru online community is pretty damn good. (Norton as well... but that gang are practically geritatrics at this point. )
  17. I'm dragging this off topic again... but what the hell. Yeah, this is why the plans to do an engine swaps into it with something modern and powerful are over for me now. L20B and a weber +cam is all she'll get. Drive and enjoy. Crumple zones and airbags are a thing. I'll put more speed money into a modern car, and leave the 510 a vintage fun thing with an old carby engine. (OK, maybe ITB swap it, we'll see, but the L series is there until it dies.....) When I finally get into that project, I'll put someting up in the non-Subaru folder. Now, back to discussing Defi gauges....
  18. Agreed. I wish I was back on the West Coast and could go for a ride along in that thing instead of just chatting with these legends via email. And no, I do not believe any of the cars and of these guys were building were official Team Datsun, they were mainly racing in BC-only leagues, or at least it was people from the PNW who participated. Lots of crazy stories and old photos over on the510realm.com
  19. Damn March refuses to get warm! Biding my time on a whole lot more building work until it's safer to be out on a ladder or a roof. BUT, the building (roof) itself holds water out, so I've at least been able to work on a job when it was drizzling and stay dry. Might not sounds like much, but I've only ever done maybe 2 jobs on cars/motorcyles under a roof in the 20 odd years I've been working on things with engines. So, as small of a victory as it is to have done a couple small jobs, it feels had earned. Had a consult with my contractor friend about how to build and install the ladder outriggers to support the 12" of eaves on the gable sides of the building. I'd been scratching my head over it for a while. Came up with a workable solution that got the okay from him and should be fine to pass framing inspection. Despite his 30 years in contracting, and my 10 years part time work doing framing, neither of us has actually built a structure quite like this. So it's interesting to have a beer and chat over this kind of thing to come up with what we think is the best solution. It would be really interesting to have a chat with a full time structural framer when it's all done about what I did right, and what I did that hard/stupid way!
  20. Dude. We get it, you don't think gauges are okay. They're a distraction that kill people and are useless. We can respect your opinion, disagree and be allowed to have our own. There needs to be room on this forum for discussion, and logical, factually supported arguements that people don't agree with. Yelling and raging at people who disagree with you is the tactic of bullies and dictators. Civil discussion while recognizing differing opinions is the better option. May I politely offer up the following information shared with me by Keith Law, of Specialty Engineering, BC, Canada. You probably won't know who that is, but in our little country, he was one of the first guys to strap a blow-through carberettor and a turbo onto a Datun 510 and lay some hurt on the Porches of the day. He was instrumental in developing a better turbo system for these cars, and part of the BC racing circuit with a gang of other smart people and engineers since the 70s. Smarter guy than me by every metric and who probably has more experience with cars than even you do. He's was racing cars before most of the folks using this site were born. This is a (poor) shot of his cockpit, showing some of the gauges he runs in his street/race 510. That's 7 within frame, and there are a couple more, I just couldn't find all the photos right now. Below is part of our discussion about using a wideband and installing a gauge etc... Part of a longer conversation about doing something better and smarter than plug chops and reading plugs constantly. Note that most of the cars they work on get AFR gauges. Does this mean that all gauges are good all the time? No. Does this meant that F&F style gauge packs are okay? No. Hell, it doesn't even mean that Keith is right to be doing this. But you can bet he does not spend most of his time looking at gauges while whipping his insanely quick turbo 510 along the mountain passed of BC. I thought you might appreciate a good 510 story. This is a race car, built by an engineer with almost 50 years of track racing and "enthusiastic street driving". Yes, of course he could be using digital data management and 'proper' logging gear with no gauges and some LEDs. In this case, he does not, because the supercomputer between your ears is up to the task of tracking/following/observing data to the point where something that is not okay is noticed. They tune on a dyno of course, but also look at realtime data. This is simply something they're used to and continue to do: there is more than one way to solve a problem/accomplish a task. For the record; I am just trying to point out that there can be more the one correct solution to a problem. You can come back around and hate on me all you like, but if we are trying to create a place for constructive conversation, I'm going to point out that the attitude that says "I am right and all others are wrong" isn't terribly helpful.
  21. Awesome. Glad to hear it dude. I realize it's not exactly around the corner, but I've driven from here to Aurora for parts when the price was right in the past, Hah! Also, no speed shops to speak of near me, so I'm always going at least to Mississauga to the JDM guys, or Touge, or to Brantford and Subie Supply Company. You're lucky having a couple of Subie specialists up your way as well. I totally forgot about the Sportsmans show as well. Haven't been since I was a kid, like 30+ years ago. I wonder if it would be as cool to go as an adult, haha! Good luck with the trim fitment, that's a good look. I too would love to have a JDM/EDM bumper, but the cost just isn't reasonable for me right now for a peice of plastic. I don't know if they were ever cheaper, or if there are aftermarket knockoffs, but $800 USD is a LOT of money.
  22. Honestly, I think those defi gauges look pretty sweet. I just don't have that kind of cash, and I still like my OEM headunit just fine, so I wouldn't have anywhere to put them anyway. Didn't mean to start a cockfight. I just do think that some realtime data has value, and that gauges are a good way of tracking it. I'll be installing a coupld in the Datto as well, since there are different concerns in 50 year old cars that can't be monitored with and AP or the like. I respect @m sprank 's experience in all this. I'm sure he's forgotten more than I'll know about Subarus. I'll thank my unfortunate g/f for teaching me the lesson that (despite my incredibly recalcitrant nature) some arguements aren't worth having.
  23. I've got an '05 Legacy wagon for parts in my driveway. Rear bumper is in pretty good shape, and I think the colour is Royal Blue Pearl?? It's navy, and looks a lot like that photo. Pretty sure you'd need to move the wheel arch moldings over from the OB, but if it helps you out, you can have it for a LOT less than $250 USD. I'm in St. Catharines, so definitely a little further than Mississauga, but not THAT much further. If I am misunderstanding what you're trying to do, then no worry, I don't understand how that bumper lip spoiler fits exactly. EDIT: LGT rear crash bar also available if wanted. I think the OB one would come down too low? My OBW isn't an XT, so I'm not familiar with that fitment, but I assume it's probably about the same as the standard model? Could be totally wrong, and maybe the XT doesn't have the turned down mufflers like the 2.5i.
  24. I think this has gone waaaay out of the scope of the OP's question about fitment, and is getting a little bit obdurate. Shall we start another thread to continue the arguement (discussion?), or maybe take it up in person at the Legacy ECM? Provided in either case that someone can disagree and not be raged at?
