Sorry to hear your tranny may have given up the ghost. Major disappointment.

It is a major disappointment. Ive had nothing but problems with this car, and being in college its not like I have an unlimited supply of cash. Lucky I had set aside money for the car when I bought it for a steal of a price. But so far I have put in like $3500 in maintenance and mods. Most of it was from the mandatory turbo upgrade from the blown ebay turbo from PO.

But Im not the type of guy that dwells in the past and I have worked way too hard to give up now on this car. I look on the bright side and think that I got this car for $9500 and that even with the $3500 i put into it, im still way above the price they go for and thats WITH the upgraded turbo... if you follow what Im saying. Shit happens and I got a new job and will be making some good money and since I live at home I dont really have any bills except for this car. So I'll do my homework on this problem and get it sorted out. Its been a blast to drive, when it has been working :p

But I work to put money into my car, and if my car was all set, then id have no reason to work  Im at 86k miles (hit that today) and the clutch and timing belt and stuff was replaced at 73k miles with the motor and turbo.

So I hopefully dont have to worry about those for a while.

Ive been doing some research on this center diff problem and it seems pretty straight forward. Once I confirm its the center diff, Ive found that its a fairly simple job. Although its way past my DIY type of job. So I think Motive Auto Works will handle this. Ive found that the center diff change is about 4 hours of work and you can do it with the tranny still in the car.

So I could possibly be looking for a used tranny for a used center diff. These are just ideas and will take it one step at a time.

First step is diagnosis.

Has anybody had any experience with center diff problems/replacements?

How much did it run you?

Bearings or the diff? I've been keeping my presence on the forum low, but I've got some experience in the center diff arena.

If you have to replace the diff, buy new @ $500 from Heuberger or a used one (it take 40lb-ft to turn it, so you're not going to test one by hand). If it's the bearings, that is a very simple job that can be done with a shop press and bearing/gear puller set.

GL and remember that it's worth it to spend the extra few hundred now to fix vs. buying a new car even if you're in college.

Sorry, suggesting performance options

Hahah I was just messing with you.

I actually thought you meant like an aftermarket differential option.

But i dont know how routing a DCCD would work.

I think I would have to just find a used center diff and put that in and ill be all set hopefully...

spc - which wheels were getting power? Are you FWD or RWD at this point? I thought you ended up FWD when we were at the dyno but then I heard/saw noises it's your rear wheels have drive and your front wheels are free wheeling?

Im pretty sure that my front wheels were getting power and a noise was happening and the rear wheels wouldnt really spin. I think they would spin like once or twice but it would mostly be the front wheels would get power but a noise would happen (couldnt tell where it was happening) and my rear wheels wouldnt get power and not spin.

I dont mind if its center diff because I can pick up a used one for like $100-200. Then install is $300-$400.

Doing some research it could be possibly less than I thought. This obviously would be best case scenario.

Here is the sound it would make.. I think...

Others that were there can possibly confirm

wish you'd have shown/demonstrated the noise... and yes, makes more sense it's your front wheels only - I remember Bren saying something about you spinning your front tires when you launch? This obviously requires some proper diagnosis and not guesswork. Are you sure your car sounds like that video? If it does, how come you thought there was nothing wrong or did you up until now think that was normal?

Bren said that its getting only power to the front because when I launch the front would rise up a lot. And also on my way home from work tonight, I was taking a right up a hill and i was in second I was doing some spirited driving and may have been going to fast for the turn and I could have sworn I kind of like fish taled into the turn. Not sure. Could be paranoia.

As regards to the noise, it sounded like that when it was on the dyno. Not when driving on the street. Wierd. Going to have to go to a tranny specialist.

best cause scenario is that its the center diff bearings

Put it on jackstands and drive it. That will determine F/R drive :)

As for the noise, it's $133 in bearings. Mine was that noise and I fixed it in the comfort of my garage with the trans mounted in the car. Expect to pay around $800 for the repair though.

Also, you can drive it for a while with it making the whining noise. I only replaced mine when I thought it got worse all of a sudden. I put about 30k on them with whining before I realized it wasn't a normal noise.

^^^^ Yes!! Ever since I got the car its been a whining noise! I thought that was the turbo for some reason! And also the shifter makes some noise when in gear and you move the stick. Ive read some threads and this seems to be the problem or something to that affect. Regardless, the trans must be opened up and inspected to figure out if its the bearings, center diff, or viscous coupling.

Anybody in MA have experience with taking apart your tranny? I would love to finally learn some stuff rather than just give it to a mechanic. I mean I wouldnt mind giving it to my mechanic because hes awesome, but I also want to learn. Thats the main reason why Im into cars is because I want to learn as much as I can.

Don't bother inspecting it. It's one bearing that fails and you might as well replace it when you have it all apart. The good news is that it's been superseded twice so it might be fixed...

I would verify the center diff as bad though. It might not be. If you get power to only the front wheels, I suspect the diff or the center diff transfer driven gear (takes power from center diff to rear) is bad.

This job is time consuming due to the fujibond cure time of 24 hours (read internet for instructions). If you find a local shop with a shop press, you can have them press the bearings on and off. I spent about $180 at local harbor freight and got a 20T press and bearing/gear puller to do the job. I had to make a press tool out of the old bearings using a Dremel for one of them. The others I used some sockets and arbor plates.

hey spc there is a guy in the forsale section who has a transmission and stuff for sale (rear dif etc) car was in an accident so may be he would be willing to part out other things.

Im on it! I got to find out the exact problem though. And the only way to figure that out is if the tranny is opened up. And i cant spare my car being gone for longer than a weekend. So i got to save up in the meantime until i school break and then i can figure this out and fix it for the winter.

I wonder if you could run an aftermarket DCCD... That would be awesome

Just entertaining the idea.

Would it be possible to have SI drive in my 06 spec b?

Besides a ton of money being forked over, Im trying to think of the changes that would need to be done to actually make that a possibility?
