Going stage 2, which clutch?

Yes 9k on the clutch. I was not able to see the work done because the car was over hauled and aftermarket installation was done all at once (Clutch, invidia down pipe / exhaust basically a stage 2 upgrade) It was a complete clutch kit and all work was done by my good friend at Subaru. I am not sure of the HP but it has to be pushing well over 305hp and 300lbs torque. Unfortunately I am not sure about any spillage etc on the flywheel, but this JUST started happening. I was not able to drive it today, but will take it out in a few hours and give it some hard 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear pulls to see what is going on. Now that I think about it could it be a flywheel slippage problem? I will give you guys some feedback later. Thanks for the quick responses!

Let us know, also find out what flywheel they put in there. IIRC it should be a SMFW from the 06+ WRX/07+ Legacy GT. If it wasn't resurfaced it could be an issue. Keep us posted.

Comp Stage 3 should hold 500/500. The clutch uses the Comp LWFW. Sorry, I misunderstood. I read it as the motor was just rebuilt and now the clutch is slipping. If it was done all at the same time (9k miles ago), than you should be able to disregard the questions about install/observations. Flywheels dont slip. If they do, you have a MUCH LARGER problem. Like the bolts holding the FW to the crank are missing.

Slipping from 2-3K would be odd. I would expect slippage at peak torque, usually in the 3500-4500rpm range. Many times when they start to slip it happens in 5th gear (flooring it to pass on the freeway). Are you sure it was slippage? If you can replicate it (possibly catch the rpm rise then fall then rise again in a log) the slip can be verified. If it is slipping now, then my best recommendation would be to get it good and hot then let it cool and see if that gets it grabbing again.

Ah ha, didn't realize the stage 3 came with the LWFW. It is odd to see it slip on the lower side of the rpm range as you say.

I hate to say it but check your floor mats, we've seen slipping clutch problems end up being floor mats interfering with the clutch pedal actuation.

Oooohhhh. Mike reminded me... Yes, its winter. The pesky all weather floor mats that protect the carpet so well deff interfered with my shifting. They are thicker which makes my toe "hook" the dash panel. Even if not planting the heel to shift they can cause interference.

Thanks for reminding me sir. I see less of the all weather mats in So Cal.

Hey whats up guys So I gave the car a whirl and during my 2nd - 4th gear pull it didn't slip at all, but when I accelerated in 4th it did indeed slip again. Here are the videos

When you stab it in 4th gear it definitely looks like the clutch is slipping--but when you row through 2nd-4th it doesn't seem to slip at all...odd...

Yup! SMH!!! :spin: It was 20 degrees out if that means anything. I have forged pistons so I took the time to warm the car up, and also felt how it grabbed in first on the slope in my driveway it seemed pretty good.

You can easily burn up a clutch in 9k miles doing 1k to 2k starts all the time, especially if you ride it to decrease the harsh engagement. I got about 12k - 15k out of my 2nd clutch, but I also autoxed quite a bit.

A LWFW is glorious on the racetrack, but it sucks for DD. You really have to pay attention to your starts so you don't over-rev. I would go with one of the WRX single mass FWs if you can find a clutch that will work with it and your power level. If not, think about raising your idle 100-200 rpms to help with standing starts.

I noticed this yesterday in 5th and 6th gear around 3k rpms going ~60mph.

I have 57k miles on my stock clutch and have been at stage 2 for about 40k of those miles.

Is there an adjustment I can make or do I need to replace parts?

I guess I'll be scheduling an appointment at AZP soon...

Yup looks like same with me! Now to figure out what will work with my setup being that this is my daily! I wanted to drop a STI tranny as well but didn't plan on having to do one for at least another year or so. I'm even having second thoughts about buying a cobb access port until I find something that will be able to take the power!:confused:

A clutch every year is not cost effective lol

  • 2 years later...

Bringing this back from the dead and hoping to get some input from both Mike's in here :-)

Can I use an FX350 with the stock FW? DD 07 Spec B by the way.

The car will eventually be running a BNR Billet 18G on E85 (Pending installation FYI)

Thanks

Not in a SpecB 6MT. You will need an STi flywheel (OEM is fine).

In that case do you think a Southbend Stage 2 Endurance will suffice for an 18G on E85? On a side note I followed your advice and purchased a Killer B header.

I'd go with a stage 3 just to be safe. especially since you're going E85

No. You are converting to an STi clutch. You must always use an STi FW. SpecB 6MT and STi 6MT flywheels are different. The clutches are too (friction surface area and pressure plate to FW mounting). There were too few SpecB's made to justify aftermarket clutch offerings. You must convert pressure plate, disc and FW to STi.
