Bilstein BTS Outback XT kit pictures

The ghetto version would be to get stock LegacyGT Wagon springs (there are different front versions for auto vs 5-sp), USA HD Bilsteins in front, and here's where it gets ghetto: rear HD Bilsteins with huge spacers or maybe weld on an additional eyelet to the bottom of the existing eyelet, thereby extending the effective length of the body of the rear shock. I'm 99.9% sure the OEM GT Wagon springs are in the ballpark, unless you are racing, and would mate up reasonably well with USA HD Bilsteins. The only caveat is the rear HD's are much shorter than the Outback rear shocks, so you must somehow extend them. I wouldn't get overly concerned with the stroke length, but body length is too short. Front HD's are also shorter, but only 0.75 inch. Using GT springs lowers a bit more, but not too much. Its even possible the 5088 kit uses these front struts, or the bodies (no clue on the internals).

 

I have BTS springs all around. In front, I have the HD struts. In back I have some odd JDM struts, which I had revalved to be equivalent to the rear HD's (although longer body, and longer stroke). I have no idea where you would get these rear shocks today. After going through great pains to get the BTS springs out of New Zealand, comparing them with the USDM LGT springs, the fronts are very close to identical, and though the rears are different, I again would say they are within spitting distance. Pictures of my car are somewhere in here. It is lowered. It is stiffer. It is composed, though gets annoying on rough roads. More noise too. Its possible OEM Spec B front springs would add additional compliance, since I believe they are softer. Of course, be prepared to add spacers here or there to level things out, but I have none, since my rears have maybe 2" of adjustability.

 

P.S. +1 on getting a fatter rear sway. I've thought of adding a fatter front bar, but its not a priority. (in fact the whole Subaru thing has become less of a priority for me).

 

Without going wild, if you want a little lowering, I think the next best thing could be the LGT wagon springs on KYB struts (rears are for 02-04) It would be an interesting experiment to get the Sachs shocks / struts instead of KYB, available from eShock. I would expect good comfort, but no idea if better or worse than KYB. Even the 02-04 rear KYBs are underdamped, though much better than the 05-09 rear ones.

That's my setup:

Rear - JDM Spec.B rear wagon springs. Bilstein HDs. 1.5 inch spacer.

Ride height: 15 / 15.5. 1.5 - 2 inches lower than stock USDM.

 

Also second fatter rearsway bar. I didn my suspension and waited awhile before doing it. I was kicking myself for not installing it sooner. FSB -it's very much an ehh. It did some stuff. Not like the RSB though.

As for me, I have changed the following:

 

-put front whiteline bushing for swaybar and control arms

-new stock struts in the front

-rear whiteline swaybar+AVO endlinks

-rear 00-04 kyb struts

-rear rallitek overload springs

-all new bushings on every single rear suspension link.

 

Even after all of this, I am not happy :mad:. Still too bouncy. Way under dampened. Hate it. Thing is I want a more composed ride, and keep ride height so I can still do light offroad trips. Very frustrating that we don't have much option than get the car lowered or pay a good amount of cash for this kit :(.

I did a track day with all my spacers in. No issues. my understanding when I researched this years and years ago was that the struts aren't subject to any shear forces (normally - don't hit curbs). The spacers act as an extension of the strut / car body.

 

In addition - offroaders frequently install 1-1.5 inch spacers on top of their normal Outback height suspension and never have issues.

I think the simplest path to upgrade my suspension is a choice between

5056, which may be difficult to source,

5058, (the H6 version) which might actually be more appropriate for me with all my front heavy mods or the

5088, (not sure if it's actually available,) but might result in even better handling due in part to being ~30mm lower, but hopefully not too degraded of a ride...?

 

Anybody wants to give their recommendations/preference votes?

You should come out to the Sunday meet at Philz in Cupertino. I generally come every Sunday and I have the BTS-5056 with a complete SpecB/Whiteline setup.

^WRX USA, how much did it cost you to install the bts kit when all said and done?

How much did u pay for it?

 

Total costs were $2018 for the parts. Here is the breakdown:

 

Bilstein BTS-5056J Kit $1425 (with Buyee fees) + $310 for UPS shipping

Rear Top Hats (JapanParts.com) - $144 shipped

Front Tops Hats (SubaruGenuineParts.com) - $126 shipped

Front Dust Caps (Local Subaru Dealership) - $13

 

I didn't realize that it was you that asked then too :lol:

 

Installation was over $500 (maybe $700) and then $110 for a pro-alignment.

I ordered BTS 5056 kit about two years ago. Rear damping seemed always right from start too soft. Higher frequency was ok but slow travel damping was not on par with front.

 

Wasn't sure if that was just the way it was designed at first. Over the time I became confident that something was wrong. Sent rear shocks to Finnish Bilstein rally specialist for a check.

 

Rear shocks were incorrectly assembled with different parts and internal nut had loosened so over the time shocks would have damaged permanently. After reconditioning and a small increase of slow speed damping rear of the and car feels COMPLETELY different. It's now as it should have been all time.

 

During this process I searched for possibility to custom make equivalent Bilstein rears with matching springs. This is possible! Cost for pair of shocks and springs should stay under 500 EUR

 

Anyone interested? Custom shock absorption settings possible as well
