you sure about this? should I also get a heat shield, more like water shield?

 

After reading a bunch of thread about AEM CAI, I found the AVO CAI. Which is better? AVO CAI or AEM?

 

i have an AEM with no shield and have been pleased with how it's treating me. though I dont have FMIC so I cant comment on the fitment.

 

dunno much about the AVO, though.

the aem cai will fit with the xo2 FMIC... as far as fitting with a heat shield thats doubtful... i have a aem cai with heat shield (water shield) and from the looks of pics from other members with the cai and FMIC its a pretty tight fit... im not so much worried about taking in water from underneath... but taking water from the front.... because the fog lights will be gone there will be a hole... behind that hole will be one side of the IC piping.. and behind that the filter for the intake... that is my concern... i definitely wanna keep that open though... cold air directly to my intake doesnt sound bad.... just everything else that comes with cold air... water, dirt, and all sorts of other crap....

AVO is a better quality piece and there is not nearly as much of a need to worry about water with it.

 

 

i too have heard the AVO is better... which i kinda wished i would have went with that one... it doesnt sit as far down so you dont need to really worry about water issues...

Speaking of intakes that fit...has anyone cut the K&N Typhoon so that it doesn;t stick in the wheel well? I was logging 115 degree intake temps on a 65 degree day I think part of the reason is because the IC pipe are in physical contact with the filter. i was thinking of chopping it to shorten the distance the filter extends into the wheelwell.

^put a heat shield between them... u can probably make something up... or wrap the IC piping... i dont think the IC piping is causing all that heat... honestly it sounds like its more ur underhood temps than anything....

Yeah..I have heat wrap sitting in my garage..I need to wrap the IC piping and the DP. The other problem is the intake is fitting really tightly..I think it needs some more wiggle room.

 

btw...yesterday 60 degrees out last night, IAT 147 while idling for 4 minutes. YIKES.

arent the tubes that come off the compressor considered the hot side? the air is getting heated up in the turbo, and then compressed which increases heat.

 

so it's probably a combination of the heat coming off the IC pipes and the under hood temps. but if your intake is sticking into the fender, then probably more-so the IC pipes because they run right by it. wrap those pipes and you'll probably see a big difference.

ive never seen a IC pipe get THAT hot before... and he has the k&n typhoon intake i believe... that intake does not sit in the fender well... i guess you can say it sorta does but not really... it usually comes with a heat shield but he doesnt have that because of the FMIC... so MOST of the heat... probably like 90% is from the motor... especially if hes sitting ur not heating ur turbo enough at idle to cause that much heat...

I think it is a combo of both...the hot pipes get pretty hot after a run..which in turn, heats the underhood temps even further. At the end of the day, the best rememdy is to wrap the hot pipes and my DP (which has no heat shield).

^ i would definitely wrap the IC pipes... never thought of wrapping my DP though... hmm.... that sounds like a good idea because it does get HOT in that area.... i wouldnt chop ur k&n though... i would leave that the way it came... maybe u can add some piping to make it sit slightly lower??

hey "itsme" when you put on ur 20g turbo did you have to make a different pipe to connect to it?? or did you just take away the adapter for the vf40?? can u take a close up pic so i can see?? thanks so much..

Definitely cut off the brackets and take your time with the bumper beam and skin. i had to cut a bunch out of the beam and very little off the skin (only where the piping connects to the intercooler)

I just took off the adapter.
