One of the first? Wrong. Subaru was THE first to offer CVT in North America.

My Justy had a manual, so I never experienced their CVT. I was tempted to try it, but never did.

They never want to give Subaru credit...

I suppose they must think that, since Subaru isn't really on their radar screen, they can't have been first at something. Subaru has been a plucky little company right from the start. That's why I like 'em.

I wish they would offer some of the goodies that the JDM gets.. I mean take Joe Blow.. He looks at the features the USDM Subaru model has I bet 100% he wont look at the JDM model and see how many other extra features they get.. So he thinks Subaru = econobox features.

Some neat stuff I've seen with the JDM market is the little I think it was 30ML bottle cooler.. But I think one of the Dodge models have that now... Dual Range tranny And what I hear a Nav system standard?

Toyota minivans had a little mini-fridge in the mid '80s. The engine was in the hump under the front seats, and the mini-fridge tucked in between that and the dash. It ran off the A/C compressor. I almost bought one (used), before I decided on a Previa. They discontinued the mini-fridge idea when they switched to the Previa, which had the rotating middle-row captains chairs, which the new Chryslers are just now copying, 15 years later.

I believe the Previa was the first to have stowable rear seats too. They folded up against the sides of the cabin. Honda later invented the in-floor stowage of the rear seat.

It seems that the Japanese come up with good ideas that are years ahead of their time. People don't recognize the value at the time, then, when the American manufacturers finally get around to copying them, everyone seems to think it's a great idea!

Subaru brought the first AWD wagon to the US in the '70s. Then when AMC copied it in the '80s, people thought it was neat stuff. They were saying AMC was ahead of their time, which was really a great compliment to Subaru, though not many realized it.

Early Subarus had the spare tire on top of the engine, freeing up trunk space, and making use of open space on top of the low-profile flat-4.

Subaru invented the hill-holder clutch, and had it here in the '80s (if not the '70s). If you depressed the clutch and brake at the same time, you could let off the brake pedal, and, as long as you held the clutch in, it would hold the brake too. It was great for starting off on a hill - you didn't have to worry about rolling backwards.

So many great ideas,... and that's just covering stuff that was brought to the US.

That's f'in sexy!

But what the hell is up with the anti-aircraft gun projectors and chrome steering wheel? I like the rear view mirrors... but how the HELL would you be able to distinguish anything through that 1/2" piece of plastic?

I'm really hoping they don't botch up the diesel by offering only a CVT..

That would be a deal breaker.

Can the CVT actually hold up to a diesel? I know that VW/Audi, and I even think I heard Nissan has been having problems with their CVTs lasting longer then 35k.

That Exiga is hideous! I understnd the need for 3 rows of seats, but please say most of this car does not make it to production! (at least not with a "Legacy" tag!)

I like quite a bit of the interior, but the outside looks like they are following Nissan's descent into futuristic-looking crap! Clean and simple is much better than all the junk on this beast.

^well then what the eff happened to them, they sure aren't coming up with too many great ideas these days :(

I think they suffered from GM-itis. Once GM got their dirty little fingers into FHI, Subaru started losing their way. Now that they're free from GM, I hope Toyota doesn't help them lose their way in a different direction. I'm seeing too many Mazda cues in the new Impreza and the Exiga, so I'm really hoping that's not their new styling trend. If it is, it's not really that terrible, it's just too derivative of someone else's product. That's not the path to leadership.
