Machine Age Victim
here's a no cut no drill install of the DDM kit, looks like the one from the OP First take off the plastic cap from behind the bulb. Unplug the bulb. Follow the wires to the rubber grommet and pull it out, the bulb socket will come out too if you turn it sideways. This is what it looks like out of the headlight housing. http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/7851/headlight1si0.jpg Pull the blue and black wires (with the flat metal ends) out from the rubber grommet that comes with the kit. Now take the old bulb out and put the new bulb in. Route the wires from the bulb through the hole from the stock rubber grommet. Now this is the tricky part. Use a little water to help lube the DDM rubber grommet and work it into the hole in the headlight housing. Should look like this. http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/2863/headlight2uj3.jpg Now plug the two wires you pulled out from the DDM grommet into the stock socket (blue to pink and black to black), you may need to take apart the socket to close the clamps a little more to keep the metal ends from coming out. Then tape it up and it will look like this. http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/9350/headlight3jl4.jpg Once you've done that tape up two holes in the DDM rubber grommet and mount your ballast (I found that the frame under the fenders works good) tape them down and use the zip ties (may want to do this before you connect all the wires so you can route them behind the frame). Plug the bulb wires into the ballast. The wires should look like this when done http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/6652/headlight4ia6.jpg Now tuck the wires into the fender and you're good to go
djkxgo0k
i have a quick question. i have the 50W apexcone HID kit and i've noticed that if i have the headlights in the on position, and i put the keys in the ignition, they turn on properly, but once i start the car engine, they turn off. anyone else have this and have a solution to this problem? it's not too big of an issue, as i can just flip it off and back on and it comes back on. but i was just wondering if anyone's had a solution to this problem. MiniStiGuy
first you Do Not want to leave the lights in the on position when you turn the car off as the required current isn't maintained when starting a vehicle. Turn the lights off, turn off the car and when you start it again then you turn the lights on Once the car is started. CRAZY KEN
...like what MiniSTiGuy said...turn lights onafter you start your car. Tape positive feed directly to the battery and negative through the OEM harness. Replace your stock battery with something that has more constant power. or all of the above! djkxgo0k
i'm guessing the full harness connects the lights to the battery? cuz i definitely don't have that, i just connected the lights to the stock harness. whobaru - so the full harness will keep the lights on when i start my car? i'm assuming it's a little more difficult to install than just plugging the bulbs into the stock harness? thanks for the info
whobaru
Yes, the full harness will keep the lights on when starting the car. The stock headlight wires drop voltage for a split second while the car is cranking, so the ballast can misfire. Using the full HID harness, you are connected directly to the battery, so even if the car's voltage drops while starting, 12V+ remains. If you just connect the positive leads straight to the battery like Ken suggested, make sure you put a fuse in-line with your wire with the appropriate amperage fuse. Your fuse should be slightly higher amperage than your HID kit will draw.

whobaru
Hey Ken- I'm asuming from your post that these kits and the stock light wires are negative trigger. Chime in if that's not accurate.

LGTWRX
Does anyone know if you can get replacement back caps for the low beam headlight housing? Just curious for the future. I drilled mine for the HID install and would like to know/have spares in case I ever need to go back to stock.
whobaru
You can always get them from Subaru. The price is the question. Look at the writing embossed on them to get the part number, then google it.

LGTWRX
unfortunately the lamp is an assembly in whole . That's what I was afraid of. If someone can look at the number on their cap and post it I would appreciate it. I am going to do some research anyhow and see what I might find. I would look at mine but part of the number is missing now that I drilled through it I was going to do the no drill install but the wires of the kit I had weren't long enough through the stock grommit. My install was with a Kaixen kit that I bought about three years ago and not the DDM kit. I can believe the prices on these kits now. I paid 3x the price when I bought mine. I was going to do a retrofit at the time on a bugeye I had but ended up selling the car.
Machine Age Victim
there should be two caps on the back of each lamp, you can possibly get the number off the other one
MiniStiGuy
the dust caps is what he's talking about and there is 1 per lamp. The ghetto drill way to do it requires drilling dead center right through the part number. OEM HID's Rx330 Retro
