So I am just wondering.. And I will perform this mod when the weather warms up here in the Great White North. To eliminate the dark spot, is it better to turn the return wire so it points down (i.e. 6 o clock) which is what others have recommended, or better to point it up and at an angle, say 1:30 or 2 o clock (if looking into the reflector from the front)? Would this also have the effect of reducing glare to oncoming drivers?

OK, here at last the pic of the single notch I made in the cover (the end of the screwdriver is pointing towards the notch).

Also, FWIW, I don't see a dark spot or band in the light pattern from my lights.

Dude, thanks for the awesome write-up! I used it to install my HIDs this weekend and it worked great. One suggestion though, on "step" 5 (see below)

I looked at the connector that's the reason you're notching the hole and saw that the "safety" wings on the connector are a separate piece that can be popped-off with a thin-bladed screwdriver.

If you temporarily take that safety off you only have to notch 1 side of the hole, and you can use a utility knife to make a pretty small "V"-shaped notch in the cover. Then you can pull the connector through at an angle (one side, then another), snap the "safety" back on and you're good to go.

I'll try to get pics of mine posted soon...

I don't have a dark spot that I can see...and I've looked for it.

LOL it's there. First, if you're staring directly into the headlights, look at the 4:30 - 5 o'clock position. You'll see the shadow caused by the return wire on the HID capsule. When inside your car, you'll notice there's a dark spot on the driver's side on the road. It's the very first thing I noticed. Or to see it better, shine your lights onto a wall and looking for a dark patch at about the 7'o clock position.

For more info, check this thread.

Anyways, looking at some other cars on the road, I noticed that some cars with reflectors have a shadow at 11'o clock when staring directly at their lights.. But this is with halogen cars. Just wondering where the optimal position for the dark spot would be for a projector...

Thanks Jeb...good info.!

clemsrs- I'm very familiar with where to look for the spot and after a minute or so of trying to find it and occasionally looking for it again on the road I have yet to see it...my point is, if it IS there, I can't even find it so I could care less. Thanks for your input though.

Your return wire pointed down? That location is kinda strange.

the blue coated wires are pointed down at 6 o'clock. if its pointed anywhere else the light is really distorted and not focused at all.. i was suggested to shave the bottom of the bulbs...not exactly sure what was meant by that..any ideas?

It's b/c your base is notched for H7. SO any other position would not put bulb far enough into the housing. What they are suggesting is getting rid of the notch I think so that you can point the bulb elsewhere. I think the link I posted shows how others have made a new notch and repointed the bulbs.

it looks from the beam spread that your bulb is mounted incorrectly.

make sure its flush against the mount.

Just got done. I took my sweet old time though. Took a little longer because after I fed the wires through my dust cap, had it all ready to go and found the bottom screw part of the protective cap on the hid bulb would not slide over the bulb. I had to unfeed everything and take of the protective shield on the bulb then feed everything through, being careful not to touch the bulb to anything.

notes:

-I got the DDM kit. I mounted the ballasts on the bottom of the headlight assembly (upside down). Hopefully the tape holds.

-Was going to run the wires through the factory grommet, but that was a pita. Wasn't even gonna f with it. 1" drill works perect and looks factory.

-I didn't have to use any notched on the 1" hole either.

No I just need the sun to set!
