Aczwild's '96 Legacy GT Project Car...

Aczwild

Recommended Posts

Well I figured I'd post up my project that is just beginning, with some sweet surprises already. As some of you know, I procured a '96 GT that has some front end damage, but is other wise in mint condition (no rust at all anywhere). My plan is to do an engine and transmission swap, with a full race interior, with of course some surprises along the way (including one now!!!)

This thread will be a pictorial diary of its evolution, so lets begin....

June 16th, 2007: Arrival of the GT

Dear god its so sad to see a hurt GT, however this one is getting a sweet overhaul. As you can see the front was hit and is tweaked a bit. The front clip is going to be professionally replaced by the best body man here in Vermont (this guy is unbelievably good and has repaired all of my families cars when they have been hit to fresh from the factory condition).

The plan has been to swap in a used '04 2.5L STi engine and 6 speed transmission, along with the complete drivetrain, however, I was fortunate enough to be in the right place, at the right time, to pick up this...

For those with an untrained Subie eye that are wondering whats so good about this pos, lets pop the hood and look at the engine and VIN plate...

... Thats right, the legend, the Subaru EJ22T, T, as in...

... this ladies and gents, is the baddest Subaru engine out there. It is the only closed deck, turbo charged engine that ever surfaced on the US scene, with oil squirters built into the block for the pistons. This will be the engine going into the GT when the front end is fixed, and the 5 speed transmission that is mated to it, may also be going into the car too, for the time being (since I wont have to put out for the 6-speed initially, if I just cant wait to drive the car).

That concludes the original post and the beginning of the project. Stay tuned, this is going to be fun!!!

Thats a 96? Those wheels weren't out until 97 unless someone bought and put em on I guess. I loved my 96, but the auto was not so much fun and that was the first year of the EJ25 so only 155 hp and it required 89 octane or dont even think about getting up to highway speed anytime soon. Good think youre doin a swap.

It will ultimately be a whole lot cheaper.
Oh hell yeah it will be, considering in total for the two cars, I've spent $600 and I now have the perfect engine, and a trans that I can use if need be, as long as I replace the clutch (the kid who had the '91 last destroyed the clutch pretty much, although I can still drive the car, and it is soooo much fun).

So that engine will ultimately be more reliable and powerful than the one from the 04 STI?
Yes and no, it will be more reliable and many people have reported running 18psi with stock internals without a problem at all. It has the potential to be more powerful than the STi, only if things are done right, or if I do ultimately decide to bore it out tho the EJ257 specs of the STi block. The EJ22T is the block that Crawford uses to create their "drag spec" engines, by boring then out to 2.7L

Damn! How much was the 91 Leggy!? I'd definitely pay more for that if I ever found one local :)

... $600 (technically) I got the '96 GT for free ;)

what exactly are the differences (in detail) for the EJ22T vs the EJ25? bosco
As for the main difference between the EJ22T and the EJ25, well see the pics I snagged from Crawford below

EJ25 style block:

... and EJ22T style block

http://www.crawfordperformance.com/images/products/r_series_01.jpg (EJ22T block bored out to 2.65L by Crawford, with replaceable wet sleeves)

Notice the closed Deck of the block around the pistons? This adds a good amount of strength to the block.

Along with the closed deck design, the engine also featured Piston Squirters that sprays oil behind the pistons (if my memory serves me right)

The Designated Size, Actual Size, HP, Torque, Compression Ratio and engine name are as follows:

2.200, 2.212, 160@5600 RPM, 181@2800 RPM, 9:1, and EJ-22T (Courtesy of imprezamods.com)

EDIT: Also here is a link to NASIOC about the EJ22T http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=505723

looks good. it's a 2.2L stock and with a simple bore increase can go to 2.6L? will the heads from a 2.5L work on a 2.2L and will the transmission from the 2.5L work on the 2.2L? bosco

And hood scoops also didnt debut until 1997. Whats the deal?
The hood had been dented by some punk kids, so it was just replaced with the newer, scooped hood for that agressive-ish GT look, same for the rims

Update: June 20, 2007

The engine is almost out of the '96 GT, and will soon be coming back to my garage, instead of the shop, so I can have access to it at any time when I'm out of work, which of course means late nights and booze filled weekends and bloody knuckles...

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

As for the '91, I love this damn thing! I have been driving it around (which I shouldnt really be doing, since its not insured and the plates on it arent really mine , but I just cant resist). As soon as the '96 goes in for body work, the engine will be coming out and torn down for a complete rebuild

subscribe. can't wait to see your finished product! =D
:lol::lol: Same here, I'll be doing this right, so its going to take some time, but damn this car will be sweet when done. I'm getting the damn super mod twitch
