Sadly where I'm from there's not much for  sale just two ej255 for sale, the closest ej257 I seen are in Quebec , all of the salvage yards have 0 ej255/7 just 253s and a 3.0 .   and yeah the body is mint no rust still has paint under the rear subframe and body , that's why I Wana keep it cause it can save me from spending more on a another car with transfer taxes

Where you at dude? I am assuming Canada. PM if you don't want to share.

There is an 05-06 GT in a scrapyard near me. Don't know the condition of the engine, but there is one there. I also have a used but salvageable short block EJ257 in my garage, which is my theoretical spare, but I think I am a long way from needing it, and will very likely just buy a new type RA short block if anything I am using now goes south.

Have you tried car-parts.com?

Last time I looked there were 4-5 EJ255/7s available in various states of repair on FB Marketplace for southern Ontario if that's where you are.....

$200 '04 STi long block just down the road from me right now as well.

Seller says 180k kms on it, and oil was glitter free.

For the price I am very tempted to go get it just for all the accessories and the outside chance that it is reusable. etc..

Here in the USA, we can go to any Subaru Dealership and order a new ej257 for $2000 and the engine gasket set for your year car. Can't you do that where you live ?

Anything used is going to be a crap shot if it's worth the money...Unless your going to tear it apart and inspect all the parts, and do all the labor. A machine shop can do the work you can't or don't know how too.

Again the machine shop labor is more than the cost of a new ej257.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

So went scratching again checked coils and tightened clips, put original MAF back, found a seal broken between the Turbo and intercooler. Replaced now I'm sitting with this... Idling and reving a bit in neutral. Car vibrates aggressively when held at 1000 - 1200 rpm again...

Added a few more perimeters. Atmospheric pressure seems high to me but not sure if I'm correct.

Sure we can. I think the problem is that unless you *really* like the car, that is over $3K in CAD, + all the other parts you need. Parts pricing here is not the same as the US, though you might assume it would be. It's not unusual for a part to be +40% more expensive than south of the border, and that is after you work out the currency exchange.

Since the OP states he has more lint in his pockets that cash, I suspect that the $4-6K? for a proper rebuild is out of the question. You could buy a used running GT for that kind of money these days. Or like, 2  x Yarii. 😜

More money, but complete, will run, and probably under warranty. Look up the thread by @RumblyXT about his 20X engine swap. He did a lot more work on it than you probably have to, in all honesty, but it runs now and he's happy with it.

Tradeoff, you lose some of the low end torquey grunt from the larger displacement EJ255/7, but gain a higher and quicker revving engine. If you don't do much towing or family-hauling, you'll probably not miss the displacement.

You're getting a low-mile JDM engine for the price of the parts you'd need to start rebuilding your current 255/7.

There is a good reason this is becoming the go-to repair for those who want to keep their car, but don't have the budget for a full on rebuild,

Nope, not even a chance.

It'll bolt up to the 5MT tho. It'll just be an achor tho without (probably) a standalone ECU for $3-4K installed and tuned.

That would be one way to spend bulk money and get a small, less powerful engine.

Where is local to you?

This would be essentially drop in aside from having to swap out the manifold.... I can send you the FB link if you want, and are within a reasonable drive of Niagara.

EDIT: comes without intake and oil pan. So, you've need a pan. $35 on rockauto.

I found a 255 but they sold it before I could even get the money out of my account. I'm from Canada NB / saint john

KK. That helps a little. If you'd been on this side of Quebec, there LOTS of options.

Lots of JDM shops in La Belle Provence as well. You might be able to find an EJ20X there which is probably the least expensive way to get that shell back on road, aside from something on FB.

Fwiw, if it still has the OE exhaust system in it, the catalytics convertors sell for like $700 these days. (Depending on your scrap yard.)

You could make that loan back pretty fast. + body panels that are still okay, etc…

Yeah I saw that one.  For the price, you could find what is potentially wrong with it, fix it and resell at a profit.

Do you know offhand which head the '04 STi came with?

I assumed they were B25s as well, but maybe not? I know the cams in ours are a little restrictive at high RPMs, but I also did not think that STi was really all that different aside from the turbo and aluminium intake.

I PM'd the guy. If it comes with the accessories I will go get it. For that price, it's good for spare parts for me. Maybe some fodder for the ECM parts swap wants/needs thing.

Sweet thanks. Too lazy to do my digging. I was pretty sure 04 Sti and 05 GT were the same longblock. Big differences were the tunes and turbos.

It's a 15 minute drive for me, so if I hear back from the guy, I'll go get it. Hell, the valve shim buckets alone are worth about $200 for all 16, and sodium filled valves aren't cheap either.

If the things hasn't been beaten on it's entire life, there are some parts there worth having.

Hi All,

Just an update on my problem which was similar to this... It's sorted...

After checking, doing research, getting advise from mechanics and Subaru specialist this side as well as taking everything apart 16 times... The oil was the problem. In the last month I replaced the oil 4 - 5 times.

One mechanic says 10w40 is fine for your vehicle.

One Subaru specialist says 10w40 is fine for your vehicle as it has high milage...

Other Subaru specialist says they only use 10w60 Ravenol oil.

Manual says use 5w30 A3 Grade...

So sad to say I tried all of them and the 5w30 oil is what solved my problem, exactly as the manual says (too many oil forums were read through during this investigation)... I would rather have my vehicle burning a bit of oil then not having it running at all...

10w40 resulted in random lag then immediate boost afterwards which was dangerous and poor idle

10w60 made the engine quiet but the car felt heavy and continued to have stutter with no delayed throttle on the high end and bad fuel efficiency.

10w30 runs right, idles well, fuel consumption is good nothing more to really say.

Thank you for the feedback it gave me a good way to understand my vehicle a little bit better as I haven't had it for a year yet.

I would not have expected it to have been an issue either but it's the only thing I changed that changed how the car was idling and driving... The change in the driving experience with the different oils was very noticeable... The car just wants nothing else but 5W30 A3... That is what she's telling me...

STI's and Legacy GT's have the same basic shortblock. I can't recall when STI's got dual variable valve control. But there are block off plates to fix that. EJ257 has a slightly different piston shape, but not enough to effect the tune.

So I still had a small hesitation, I replaced the ground wires below the engine.

I also found that the seal between the intercooler and turbo was broken. Theres no local stock in my area and would need to import it but instead I just designed one and 3D printed it. Seems to be working fine thus far. Link below on Thingiverse to the model.
