@DoctorDaveLGT my my- you certainly make a good case. Your car is the type of thing that made me start this journey in the first place.

I like your badge philosophy. On the fence for taking off the SpecB badge on the back and going with the S402/STI. Best 'problem' yet with the car..

Appreciate it! I know what you mean all to well. I kinda reversed my philosophy with my TSX. Removed the manufacturer's badge and added the Type S badge instead on the rear. It's extremely rare that anyone knows what the car is so it all still works out ha. 20211207_130239.thumb.jpg.fae7b0231fc4c9ba7bf558c505d4a65d.jpg

You should stick a Honda badge on the back just to mess with people 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The clean look certainly does suit it 😀

Interesting color band in the exhaust valves from the S402’s engine. It’s the graphing point for  two different metals that make the valve(top is magnetic metal-but the bottom part that goes in the cylinder is not). The only concern was that orange’ish dare I say ‘rust’ color.
The machine shop/tuner said they had never seen a Subaru valve with that color. Engine had low miles, but rather be safe than sorry, we ordered 8 new OEM valves.

I’ve been searching for years for a good used HKS downpipe to pair with the twin scroll turbo. There are domestic options but I really wanted to go JDM.( fabrication was an option but almost as much work as a new one would cost) I finally bent the knee and couldn’t resist this particular pipe which is made specifically for the S402.
fits as advertised-never had an actual “new” HKS product. It’s craftsmanship-no letdown.

One thing I've always wondered is how much power these Sxxx chassis cars could make with some fuel and a tune. I've seen the dyno charts on the Impreza forum released from Subaru (albeit without the HP/TQ number) but showed how much faster these cars spooled. It was something like 2400 RPM. I've always wondered what a proper twin scroll would look like on a dyno on these EJs. I know the VA WRX is a twin scroll, but those S chassis turbos were always so mysterious.

I believe a few guys running with the gears and gasoline guys were running s series sti turbos in their STi at gridlife…that’s probably a year or two ago now, but might give you some ideas as to what kind of capability they had.

As a die hard (like 4-5 years) fan of G&G I’ll have to go back. I remember the Evo guys were running those unique Brazilian (?) turbo that could just breathe some extra air I didn’t know the Subarus guys were doing similar things.

I forgot which Ben mentioned it…maybe Lin? I think it was when he was talking about upgrading to the HKS turbo…

It was Ben Lin. I didn't realize the HKS turbo was available to the aftermarket. If memory serves old forum posts were saying that Subaru wouldn't sell S chassis parts (maybe turbo specifically) without a VIN that matched. Maybe that's changed.

@TomahawkLabs both VF51’s were bought used. 99% sure your correct that Subaru won’t sell the S goods without some proof of ownership.
( the turbo pictured above was in great condition and looks almost new-so I have two now. The first vf51 I bought 5 years ago came off an engine that had a lot of rain/rust in its short life)

That’s the dream turbo. I can’t wait to see the dyno.

Curious on how your tuning will go.
i have a GDB with the VF36 twin scroll - tuned it put down 58 more hp/tq than stock.- spool is by 2700

Have a friend who has to rebuild his Lgt, and was thinking of a VF51 over the 52 that everyone normally does.
i have the twin scroll parts, so it wouldn't be a huge deal.

love where you are going.

@dscoobydoo that's nice gain in power you have there with a quick response. Sweet.

I'm sure this chart  has been seen before(it's probably on a thread here )I came across it on STINick19 S208 twin scroll VF58 conversion. ( prob a misprint? says the s402 has the ej257/actually a 255-but the comparison of the curves are great)

Thanks for chiming in- makes the adventure sound like there's a decent chance it'll be good. I'll ask the tuner( who is also the engine builder) to give all the tech details for me to share here.

Interesting graph.
My power curve is close to the Ej207 wVF49

as the 2.5 pushes harder on the front, but the heads dont flow as much as the good 207 heads.

That is where the power will be made in the tweaks- increasing the flow on the top end.

mind me asking how much the turbo cost?

The power curve you describe is what we’re after. Are you top or FMIC? ( I’d like to keep it top mount, but it’s not getting any colder in my area so a front mount may be they way.)

I have two Vf51s. One came off an s402 engine( that’s why you buy it right?-for the turbo) too much was spent for a 255 but..

the other turbo was at auction(Buyee) and had a friend ship it to the US. Without shipping it was about $500. After importing/buying dinners for the friend it was about $750. ( the second turbo was in much better condition than the first. I’ll probably send the first turbo off the engine to Pavel racing for a rebuild)

I have a stock twinscroll intake manifold that doesn’t clear the IAG pan. Any thoughts for a good replacement? ( lll try taking the heat shield off meantime)

Not much experience with Killer Bee, but I’d recommend reaching out directly to them and tell know what you’ve got. From what I’ve seen they’ll either help or tell you that their pan won’t fit…but either way you'll get a straight answer, they won’t BS you. Do you have the pan off the engine? Maybe try that?
