What did you do to your Outback today? V3

Recommended Posts

I've found that we adapt to trunk volume. When we only had the Evo X to travel in, we made it work. Back then that was a 7 cu ft (SEVEN!) trunk, two rear facing car seats and a double stroller.

Now when we pack, it's like: should we take this? Sure, why not, trunk isn't full yet.

Anyways. Two words: (Looks great with a) roof box.

I play tetris all the time with our trunk. I'll take a picture of its current state so you'll see. but yeah, I made it work for our last long road trip. Remember this post?

Here you go. This was from our recent 5.5K mile trip. Here, I also have an awning and a 'stowaway' box on a hitch in the back. yeah, crazy... I have been meaning to create a thread describing that epic road trip, but been too busy :(.

Edit: the Yakima equipment I have on here are the Jetstream bars (the longest ones they have) and Timberline Towers. Not cheap... But good stuff.

Nope no Tribeca. I do have an AWD Sienna. It's great allows me to overpack and still have all seats free.

I can't believe Rebourne made it so long in an Evo X. I drove to Palm Springs and packed just for two people (plus all my biking gear and bike on the roof) and I was annoyed with how little room I had. My wife was sitting so close to me.

Have I mentioned how much I like sliding doors for carseats? They are the best. The minivan is also surprisingly sporty.

I know I am not going to sell anyone else on it. But, it's like a giant (poor fuel efficiency - just like my OBXT) wagon.

I actually like vans, but no ground clearance for dirt roads and stuff :(.

My old thread with two individual strollers

The larger, tandem double stroller wedged into the front passenger seat, and since the wife was attending to the infants in the back seat, that worked out. We're all tiny though. so it's not for everyone.

Last VW I had in the stable was an 84 GTi. Last of the Rabbit body. Fun car unless your trying to rip from LA to Pleasenton in under 5 hours... We made it but the car was at the limit the entire way as it was geared for 55mph at 3K. We were not going 55.

It would shear studs off the exhaust manifold and the transmission rebuild was costly. The case split.

About the only VW interest I have now is in older Type 1 and 2 vans. Because smog exempt.

I hear ya on the smog exempt. I'm happy that CA bumped the new car exemption to 8 years, because you can pay a car off in 5 years and have 3 more years to revert that money into mods, I've never kept a car longer than 5 anyways, so 8 might be plenty.

There is a 3 inch lift available for the Sienna AWD and Ford is releasing the transit with AWD and the twin turbo v6 for 2020

SMOG exempt VW van sounds pretty good too. I was talking with a shuttle owner in Moab who uses the VW vans and said he burns a turbo up about every year, throws a new one on (Subaru turbos) and keeps chugging along.

Unsure how that turbo blows and doesn't destroy the engine though. But, that would be pretty cool.

Old VW vans are pretty cool. Don't really relieve any "It's nice to have shit that doesn't break" stress though.

There are options to put Subaru motors in the type 2. Would never boost an air cooled motor unless it was a drag specific chassis.

Friend wicked up a Thunder Valley Riot mid engine mount with a turbo from an audi... Smoked it. NA now again. Was crazy for a min. No need for more power with a chassis that weighs nothing.

Another buddy let a family heirloom 1963 westie through his hands, like an idiot, his birth year no less! I did the same letting go of the 1976 Westie that my grandparents bought new, toured Europe in then imported after the trip. Both green. We use it as a hard dig to each other when needed.

Very familiar with the platform. As well the early Datsun 510...

Far to many interests and not enough time.

There is a rusted out (for a CA car) Datsun 510 wagon that's used as a workhorse near me. Such a cool wagon.

On the Outback front - going to replace all my wheel bearings / brake rotors / brakes. Ordered NSK for the rear. haven't settled on the front. My wagon just sounds loud inside and I am assuming it's worn out wheel bearings at 160k miles. I have had the same brake rotors for many many years and it's probably time for new ones. Going Project Mu on the front and super cheap $32 brake pads on the rear.

Hey look! I do things to my car sometimes!60aeaab69e4ca8a9623ec600c80d2ddb.jpg

Now these comments that i read make total sense. Like, what do i do about the foam stuck to the old radiator? Why isn't there a foam kit for new radiators? Gah...

How I feel all the time now.

But gearing up to do a bunch of maintenance items to my car. Step one is clean the garage...

-CV Reboot, Passenger's Side

-Reman CV Axle, Driver's side

-Replacement knuckle/hub, drivers side

-Reman Steering Rack and poly bushings

-LCA Poly Bushings

-Swaybar Poly Bushings

-Endlinks and Balljoints

-New Interstate Battery

After it was all done, the traction control light is on, thinking I may need to clean the speed sensors.

GS Splitter is falling apart. Center part is gone now, front rivet is loosy goosy..

Time to tear this one off and build a stiffer replica. Have some stainless laying around. May need to get some thinner bits as well.

Was forewarned something was up when a chunk of powder coated sheet metal dropped out of the hood when placing some nutserts for the new carbon parts.

Had to chop the Subtle Rad cover but all good cause big lip is doing the job now.

Checking something this morning noticed the center diverter was not square in the inlet. Pressed it and pop. Both sides had cracked completely through.

Enjoy the carbon porn, thanks Madrig!

In other news. Turns out the popped off hose isn't the cause of my CEL. I guess I need to actually data log / do more investigation.

I did overfill the oil a little. I wonder if that could cause it to be somewhere it's not supposed to be and somehow cause an issue.

How much over?

Is the car still throwing P0244?

Here is how COBB explains it.

Boost pressure has exceeded the maximum set threshold. Run LWG (Low Wastegate) map if available. Can also be caused by failing or misconfigured boost control system, dramatic drop in ambient temperatures, and accelerating aggressively in a high gear at a low RPM.

I'd assume the Solenoid going or the lines are leaking?? Based on the fact your tune is likely up to snuff.

Could these other two variables me part of it? Temp is interesting but not that much of a swing out here. But the acceleration bit. This definition is not the only place where I a have seen the comment about accelerating in 4th and 5th from a low rpm.

You guys have all the fun with manuals.

5EAT would just drop a one or at least out of lockup and keep the rpm up.

I was in second or third. Running Intelligent (I.e. my low boost map) fixes it. I guess I should get replacement hoses and see if I can clean my GS ebcs.

My other thought is oil in the intake (forged pistons more blow by) maybe clogged it.

Are you logging the boost target parameter? It will show you how much you are actually overboosting if that is really the case.
