CovertRussian's 05 LGT Build Thread

Recommended Posts

You should check out my garage, while it is a complete mess with a LGT wagon sitting in it, there are a ton of random parts. I think I have 4-5 turbos, 3-4 engines, transmissions, etc.

I tend to buy things as I see them on sale and hold onto them until I need them, I feel like that's a step above hoarding, since most hoarders never actually use the things they hoard .

I bought two of these sets for $35 couple years back, the turbo and downpipe gaskets alone are $20, so for a few bucks more might as well get the whole kit. That's when I was planning on doing a VF39 swap in the LGT and FXT too.

I gotta say selling the FXT and getting an NA Outback was probably a really good thing for my sanity, not having to worry about replacing turbos and that jaz :spin:, and of course I say this as I haven't even made one payment on the new car .

Hint for others, leave the turbo lose on the up pipe until you have the tmic lined up and all the connections tight, then tighten the three nuts or bolts like I use.

My turbine housing doesn't have an alignment dowel pin, thus I left the chra loose and was able to rotate the rest of the turbo to get it aligned with the TMIC. Now the turbo did come with a spacer, I have no idea why it's there, doesn't seem like my Mitsu exhaust housing needed it.

Well I spoke too soon about city gas mileage, it's been sub 30's here and my fuel economy suffered from all the cold starts. Got just under 16mpg last fillup...

Now to be fair, weather wasn't the only variable, I am using a timing map with a bit higher lower timing then last fillups, plus combined with cold IAT's increasing the IAT based advance by another 2-6*, might have showed me on the other side of the MBT hill. If it stays below 30's for week or so, I'll probably zero out the IAT timing comp and see if that helps with city MPG's.

Quick shot from today right as the snowpocalypse was starting. I will say I was a little disappointing with how loose the car was with barely and inch on the ground, I wonder if my tires going below 1/2 mark has something to do with it.

Don't have much to report, just have been driving the car daily with the the 16G and taking it fairly easy (since I don't want to toast the clutch before it gets warm). Gas mileage has been around 17-19mpg depending on how many cold days we get, which is about the same as it was with the stock turbo.

I am a little bummed because I did expect a bit more from the much bigger turbo. On a bright side my oil consumption seemed to have been reduced, looks like the old turbo drain hose was the culprit. You can see the small hole right under the metal clamp:

Good thing you figured it out. Reminds me I need to buy another one of those too.

Yea, its not like there isn't someone here that's reminds people to replace that oil return hose....

Go to your favorite parts store and buy some heavy duty oil drain hose in 5/8". It's thicker and more durable then the OEM crap. I had a giant hose from my top mounted T3 days on my SR20 so I used a piece of that :).

I honestly thought it would be harder to pull the turbo and hence I didn't want to do it until I replaced the turbo. Problem is I ran into issues and only about a year or two later did I finally get time time/desire to install the 16G

All this time I've been hawking the oil levels weekly :spin:

Forgot to get these generated and posted!

Here is the VF40 vs Big 16g virtual dyno, this road is slightly slopped up thus the power was down for both runs. As you can it is about 300rpm slower to full boost, also the ~10hp power boost could be coming from 16G running 1-2psi more at peak power.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Cars/05%20LGT/Turbo/Evo%20III%2016g/Dyno%20-%20VF40%20vs%20Big16g.png~original

I will honestly say I'm a little disappointed with the 16G not making more power and more impressed with VF40 holding it's ground so well.

Finally figured I would compare the bone stock LGT vs how the car is now. Do take this with a grain a salt since they did get logged on different roads. More for entertainment :)

Cursed CL to OL delay, it's no surprise it burns valves and causes lots of detonation. What's more surprising is that these cars even make it to 100k miles on that tune. Probably because most people don't drive their cars hard....

Now crank that b!+ch up to 20 psi!! I found out 4 months after I bought my Legacy why the restrictor pill is so important! I hit 22 psi unexpectedly and almost pissed my pants. It's funny how just a few psi make such a difference. Too bad my engine would eat itself if I kept that up for long. How do you feel about that Avo380 turbo? It sounds about perfect to me.

Rofl, I'm actually running as wastegate only at 13psi. Now that the temps warmed she is actually making 250whp! Which means I'm going past MBT on timing with temperature based advances in the cold. I'm gonna see how much more I can squeeze out before I crank up the boost.

Can't say I'm too familiar with the Avo380 turbo.

I've been doing some reading on anti-lift kits and how they work overall because I was building a set for my Infiniti which has fairly limited aftermarket support.

While digging around for that information I discovered that I adjusted my caster bushings to remove caster instead of add... It's simple on the old style control arms, you simply point the rearward point of the arm towards the outside and your done.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Cars/00%20G20t%20KH3/Suspension/Control%20Arm%20Lower/SuperPro%20SPF3447K/CIMG9808.jpg

Since LGT's control arms are a different design, you actually have to point the mounting holes towards the inside of the car to gain caster. This is where I was glad I got the Whiteline kit since it should be on the spot adjustable. Sadly I couldn't budge them, so I still had to unbolt the front and rear bolts and let the arm hang on the ball joints while I spun the eccentric bolt around. On the bright side I didn't have to press them out again, so this is where Whiteline does get some brownie points.

Drive side installed wrong, removing caster:

Driver side fixed to gain caster:

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Cars/05%20LGT/Suspension/Front%20LCA/Rear%20Bushing/WALK_.5deg.jpg

While I was in there I figured I would measure the amount of anti-lift reduction these kits had. To my surprise they about the same as stock, started another thread about this, trying to figure out why Whiteline would call this kit an anti-lift kit...

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Cars/05%20LGT/Suspension/Front%20LCA/Rear%20Bushing/ALK_Stock.jpg

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t188/covertrussian/Cars/05%20LGT/Suspension/Front%20LCA/Rear%20Bushing/ALK_Whiteline_KCA334.jpg

As expected toe was way out of spec, it was toeing in about 1/3" if not more.

When I installed these bushings couple years ago they made an amazing difference, seeing that I installed them to remove 0.5* of caster and they don't have any anti-lift reduction, I'm amazing by how much of a different don't squishy bushings made! Now that I got the the additional 0.5* of caster and a good 0 toe, the car turns in a bit better and the rear end will kick out if you use lift off oversteer.

Just out of curiosity, what did you use to rotate the bushing. Everything I use tends to bend instead of turn the bushing.

i'm not sure what he did, but if you've got some correctly sized nuts, could double/snug them up and then use them to turn it. like removing/installing a threaded stud.

I could not rotate them, wheels down or up. Here's why:

- Wheels down you had car weight on them thus good luck moving them by such a small point (adjusting caster is moving wheel forward).

- Wheels up, LCA rotates and there is tension on the bushing, thus no movement again.

I unbolted the front LCA mount, then the control arm drops and I was able to finally adjust it. This makes me wonder how adjustable these actually are on the car without removal...

I wish I had the time and money for this type of stuff.

I'm ashamed to say this, but gave the car it's first bath this year. It's been raining so much that it's been impossible to find a couple rain free days.

Also got some new license plates
