Official Skiing and Snowboarding thread

I could have sworn we had one of these before, but couldn't find it, so I'm starting a new one.

Got my 10th day of the season in today already. I have a couple goals this season:

1) Ski 50 days

2) Ski 1,000,000 vertical feet (very difficult goal, but I might make it!)

3) Ski in at least 5 states

4) Finish the Talons Challenge at Beaver Creek before 1:00 (I think that's 4.5 hours)

I've currently got 10 days down and about 150,000 feet. Also have skied at 6 mountains in two states so far!

Just skied 4 days over the Christmas weekend. Hit Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Beaver Creek. The weather was beautiful, but it's killing me that it just won't SNOW!

My poor skis are getting cut up from rocks and stumps. :(

thread bump. i just got back from a ski trip at revelstoke, BC. pretty good conditions the first few days i was there with fresh powder, almost up to your thighs at some points; rain in the later days slicked up alot of the runs after. i was snowboarding on this trip but am thinking about picking up a pair of skis to handle similar conditions.

i'm leaning more towards a ski that has the ability to handle powder but can be used on firmer snow without too much instability. the armada TST and black diamond AMPerage skis are two that are on the list so far but was wondering if anyone here can make some additional recommendations or if they have some thoughts/experiences with the aforementioned options.

I'm hoping we don't go into another drought. It's been kind of dry this year.

There was snow in Boulder last night anyways but it was only one inch if not barely.

Katalyst - If you're in a position to demo skis, just demo a bunch that you're interested in. It sounds like you're looking for one of the many skis offered now that have rockered tip and tail with a camber underfoot. I haven't tried them myself, but the folks I've talked to riding the Rossignol S7's have all just about creamed their thermal underwear talking about them. K2 might have some skis that fit your desires, but I think most of what they offer in a rocker/camber ski are more along their AMP series and probably aren't as wide as you're looking at.

Gelacy - I had a date late on Saturday and missed out on the powder yesterday. Kind of a bummer, but hopefully it'll work out for the best down the road. Breck started Ullr fest yesterday ... let's hope that was the kick start we needed for a good season.

Aczwild - The Minturn Mile. Nope, never done that. I usually ski alone, so I'm very cautious of out of bounds and side country.

They had a ton of snow when we were there. They have had 17' of snow fall so far this season. Looks like they have been getting it consistently. Better that almost any where else on the continent.

Get this. I bought 2010 K2 Apache Xplorers in March 2010. Long story short, a shop tuned them and ground the tail too much. They were going to try to fix the skis, and the shop pointed out to me that the skis were supposed to have camber, and were dead flat. Did some investigation and thought it might be a warranty claim for K2. But I didn't buy them from the shop, I bought them from REI, and I was technically out of warranty by nearly a year.

So I brought them into REI anyway to see what they thought about the whole deal. They thought I was entitled to a full refund, no questions asked! Crazy.

So basically, I bought new skis on clearance in 2010, skied on them for a season and a half, they gave me a full refund and I'm getting brand new 2011/12 skis for the difference in price.

I really liked those Xplorers, so I'm going with the most similar replacement of the Aftershock. Picking them up tonight. I'll probably still get a new set of dedicated powder boards later this season.

REI exchange policy FTW!

No Joke! As much as I'd like to support local shops, with the REI flagship store being nearby and convenient, and with this experience, I would be hard pressed to make major purchases anywhere else. I'm really torn on this. I wanted to demo skis with a local shop and give them the business, but I don't think they can give me a flat out return nearly 2 years down the road if there's a problem. I was truly amazed at the service at REI.

And that's not to call REI a heartless big box store, I just don't view them as being "local. And I never imagined it would be as simple as they made it!

Revelstoke looks insane!

i can attest that it is.

the only issue is that the snow line is fairly high up, therefore necessitating the 5,620ft climb to the top (altitude of 7,300ft) via 2 gondolas and a chair lift. you can further hike to the subpeak where most of the freestyle competition was being held.

also because of the warmer temperatures, it tends to rain a lot at the base but be snowing at the peak, almost anything below the chair lift up top can get glazed over by rain and freeze overnight which makes many of the lower runs useless.
