  1. Last time I met you and Rich in an alley I got frisked by the Boystown cops... 10 years ago...
  2. You want a cruise... The NASIOC boys were asking me for one, earlier this year. But I do not have time to coordinate one in its entirety, as I did 10 years ago. I am not opposed to helping out and making one happen though.
  3. 116,000 and had a few oil lines replaced last week.
  4. I think we nee dto organize a meet. Funny, the two most senior members on the forums (we were the first to organize the meets) still have their cars. I made up my mind for the Infiniti Q50 AWD Hybrid though I do have a soft spot for the S4. But I wanna save some polar bears while being fast and half a second 0 - 60 mph isn't enough to justify the 10 mpg drop and the extra 5-10,000 $ and increased risk of reliability issues on the AUDI. I seem to have better luck with the Asians...cars....wives...etc.
  5. Hey Brian, Craig I too shopped for a car for the wife. She got a Jeep. Hey guys, let's have a meet. Next Thursday, after Easter.
  6. Of course you know right but you and I are the originals...and the only ones still with the car.
  7. I would not do a laptop anymore. been there done that. I do not want to do a dissertation on it. Cough the $$$ and do it right the first time. I've been through all these phases - so i speak from experience.
  8. it's a money pit. run away. fast.
  9. Excellent stuff. But I doubt it will help with the number of new "blown turbo" threads. It should be made a STICKY
  10. I had this installed. It seems to improve visibility in direct sunlight by about 60% and at very wide angles by about 10-15% In other words it works, when gauging from the driver's seat. If your eyesight is directly perpendicular to the screen, improvements are even better. I s'pose this is related to the way it polarizes light. My biggest problem was whenever the sun was high up in the sky and rays hit the screen through the windshield. That is where the 10-15% improvement comes in, where as before, I could not see anything, now I can. Sort of. But the range of angles at which I would not see anything is smaller. If sun is to shine directly through the front side windows (even tinted at 35% as mine), there is an improvement still, this time by about 60%. Would I buy again ? Yes. Worth the money (i purchased the 10 inch Asus EEE-PC screen which I then cut) ? Probably not but it worked as advertised and improved the readability of my screen.
  11. I wonder how AUDI 's system works: they have google Maps and Google Earth...but then they must also have maps on a hard drive for when people drive in the mountains or low signal areas
  12. I personally like the centrafuse front end and I have it working decently despite it being a conglomerate of guidance Garmin treehugger and other software. I personally use the retro CF interface as I feel it is the cleanest. I do agree that frontend software for as well as many other commercial units lacks the fitness and integration that we come to expect from an ipad or windows 7. It boils down to resources. Get a Sony Aviv n3 from 4 years ago and it will look and work better than the latest centrafuse. CF folks no matter how hard they try they cannot seem to get Bluetooth to work. Though CF has recently moved into embedded windows market working with mp3car so maybe there is hope
  13. The key is...it works. Hence I shall put one in the Forester. Never again a CarPC project even if I am rather happy with my current iteration.
  14. I think I am going to order this screen protector...not so much for the "protection" but for the reported anti-glare anti-reflective properties that would allow better visibility of the CarPC screen (Xenarc 700 TSV). I also managed to get HORM and EWF working (hacked from Windows XP embedded) , albeit on my home server/NAS which runs a full XP Pro SP3 software. But it freaking works: you can restart, you can hibernate, you can shut down the computer and it always starts up from hibernation. On the server's OLD 5400 rpm hard drive, resuming from hibernation takes as long as it takes the SSD of my CarPC to boot up (cold) and load Centrafuse (< 20 seconds). Resuming from hibernation my CarPC takes several seconds literally so I am looking forward to deploying it. If anyone is interested, I have the files and the instructions.
  15. Has anyone tried this product before ? http://www.nushield.com/lighting_comparison.php
  16. Hey itsme, I build my own PCs too. Anyways, that looks impressive. Who makes the maps for navigation on that unit ?
  17. After years of trying I have just about had it with CarPC. I cannot believe what a retard I was for ever going down this path. Guys, buy a commercial solution - do not piece it together yourself. When it breaks - and it is guaranteed to break - it is YOU who will have to fix it. As an aside, if you do get a CarPC, buy the ready-assembled automotive-minded units from MP3CAR.com In the last 4.5 years doing this I've done and hacked bodywork and PC cases and cursed more than any of you CarPC-wise. I just dropped 520 on something readily assembled, tested and warrantied from MP3CAR. And yes, there is a difference. I guess due to repeated failiures I gained anough proficiency with regards to the software to have a decent final product on the software side and by sticking to Intel-based products, I could just move the old Win XP n-lite / CF3.1 / IG4 / GMPC over to the new mo-bo and fix the drivers, boot.ini and the GUI. But I am so done with hacking boxes, adding switches, soldering wires etc. It is a phucking money pit, nothing better evidenced by the fact that I wasted another 520 on it. I will never again do a CarPC project. In the long run it is more money (twice $$$ - so far for me) and countless man-hours wasted then what an AVIC-N1 would have cost back in 2007.
  18. http://www.subaru.com/content/downloads/pdf/brochures/2010_imprezawrx.pdf So you have the WRX 5 door. Which, depending on whether it is the regular or premium trim, weighs anywhere between 3174 and 3229 lbs. Which indeed is not several hundreds less than a 3300 lbs Legacy GT. The difference curb weight wise is the tare weight of an anorexic girl on the high end or that of a larger dog on the low end.
  19. To be honest I am going back to 3.1 I do not care for the marketplace improvements and i have not seen any noteworthy improvement over 3.1. The 20 min magic of Acronis Data Backup. i purchased 3.1 a few weeks back so to me, it was an huge upgrade over my 2007-spec CF1.47. I have now plugins for iG4 and GMPC that mute music for navi; bluetooth phone actually works; there are some thought-out menus. So I like it. But would I ever do a CarPC project again if OEM navi is offered in my next car (very very likely a new JGC). And for everyone out there...get a solid state drive. I must say, once I selected my new CarPC it still took me half an year to sort out the issues. And it took me some 4 years to be happy with it - before I had no better choice. Now I can say I am reasonably happy with the setup
