The new five-door is 4414mm long, just a single millimetre shorter than the current car. It’s exactly the same width, but 1463mm high instead of 1475mm. The new car’s wheelbase is slightly longer, too, at 2644mm compared with 2621mm. Subaru claims that this frees up extra interior space.

The US-spec Impreza is being launched with a normally aspirated 2.0-litre flat four powerplant that offers 148bhp at 6200rpm and 145lb ft at 4200rpm. It replaces a 2.5-litre motor in the US market and delivers a fuel economy gain of about 30 per cent.

Hmmm... I like it. Wonder what pricing will be? We're in the market for a car for my wife. :) Are there any published performance numbers yet? Options?

Looks like a perfect replacement for the 4th gen legacy, as mentioned before.

Wonder what new car will now fill the gap in the entry-level small car segment that is now missing in the scoobie lineup?

Would be great to have a new platform the size of the GC/GF or even slightly smaller,

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

Diggin the hatchback, especially if it gets the 27/36 mpgs too...that's really impressive, even for a fwd car, and subaru pulls it off with awd. The current wrx/sti carries over for the 2012 year?? Sadness :(

Autoblog has a bunch more photos and details. (Note: They're saying 110lbs lighter than 2011, not 160.)

I wonder what the "Sport" trim entails (badge shown in the photos, but article references base, Premium and Limited trims).

On start-up, the gauges will do the STI sweep
I know this is important to some people.
Why does this picture remind me of the Pontiac Vibe?
Probably the prominent roof rails and the rear antenna. And it is a bit more wagon-y than the current Impreza hatch. (For me, this isn't a bad thing, as I always kind of liked the Vibe.)

I'm still looking for a pic of the 5-door with the hatch open. And the center console w/o nav...

 • Subaru still can't build an interior door panel that looks nice.
 • Dash and gauges look fairly decent for an economy car.
 • They removed the sliding cup-holder cover :(
 • Power mirror adjustment knob looks a little out of place on the door handle.
 • Seats look as flat and comfortable as a park bench
 • Do NOT like the split front side windows
 • Plastic silver trim is a nice touch between the upper and lower dash
 • Seater heater switches are still in an odd position

I like the ones in my 4th gen Legacy. I wish Subaru would go back to the vertical door grab handles, instead of the purely horizontal ones incorporated into the armrest. But I'm sure the latter is cheaper to build.

Overall, my impression of the styling is not bad, but it's a little too angular (seems to be a Subaru trait - does it have something to do with their manufacturing methods? Compare it to the rounded body of, say, an Audi.) Also, the darn accentuated wheel arches are my least favorite element of the design. In fact, the more images I see, the more I think those wheel arches ruin an otherwise decent looking car. (I hate the new generation of Acuras and Mazdas for the same reason.)

Why does the hatch not seem to have an exhaust? Where the sedan has the single pea-shooter hanging out back. Is it just because these are press photos or is it hidden behind that plastic skirt? This looks so much like what a 4th gen Legacy does I was half-expecting to see dual exhausts out back (not really) but I didn't expect to see a complete lack of exhaust.

If they did hide it, that is very cool. The sedan looks like a standard C-segment, cheap exhaust.
