It may be lighter...

If it's lighter I'll move to a tree house in the Congo, wear a grass skirt and change my name to Great Mumbly Wumbly.

Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

The front end looks choppy and like it's still wearing it's spy gear. The rear looks horrible.

I'll be surprised if it doesn't have the new 2.5 N/A matched with a CVT. Subaru's lightest car with it's most efficient engine and transmission.

I hope the hatch looks better.

Well be surprised because Subaru said 2.0 N/A on the first page :p

I think we're all just waiting to see if the WRX can make it look any decent...

Where?

Unfortunately, if the 2.0L N/A shows up stateside sales will plummet. That engine isn't enough for big American streets and highways.

Going backwards to reflector headlamps vs. projectors??? The side shot looks so much better than the forward/ rear shot. If they really got the MPG's up w/ AWD, they should sell a lot of base models.

The car just doesn't flow for me.

whoever drew up the great all-model bundt-cake fender overhaul in '09 needs a good caning.

why does the hoodline look so unnaturally high in that rear 1/4 pic; are we shrouding a low-set boxer, or a v10?

the rear end is like a small pot of irregular at the end of the underinspired rainbow arched canopy.

i do like the headlight shape/front fascia from head-on.

The closest competitor to the new Impreza, in ugliness !

NISSAN VERSO

It just so happens the Impreza is a little more elegant when viewed from the side. But get a glimpse from the front and the huge windshield, the fugly mirrors and headlights create the same unmistakable image of cheapness.

Boring Boring Boring. It's a shame. the last two Impreza generations have been so plain, they just get lost in a crowd of Cobalts and Corollas.

At least the late 90's / early 2000's Imprezas had some distinction. Ugly and/or cool, at least people talked about them.

How does GM Ford and Hyundai (Kia, Honda, man- even the boxy Sentra looks cooler) manage to create stylish compacts nowadays and Subaru goes backwards 5 years?

Plain is safe, and I still stand by the fact that they will sell more of this vanilla-mobile than any other Impreza before it.

I'll still wait to see what the WRX will look like, but it's looking more and more like I will not be buying another Subaru when time to refresh. The new Subaru designs just don't cut it for me anymore, regardless of whether or not they are lighter or more fasterer.

Don't forget that the Rally Impreza that became the STi was conceived from the low-end car that was boring already at that time.

The sad thing is that the WRC regulations has gone too far to really be useful for any manufacturer these days as a showplace so we won't see many cars designed for competition anymore.

So either you have a car manufacturer with a mild and bland approach and sell by the appeal to soccer moms or you target it as a "cool" car using characters like Colin McRae(RIP) or Crocodile Dundee.

The Gen 5 Legacy is probably more appealing as a family car, especially considering the better leg room in the rear seat.

The new Impreza is stepping into the empty segment left by the 4th gen Legacy, but is cheaping out on some items.

And this may open up the market for economy boxes like the Trezia.
