Verwilderd
Boring Boring Boring. It's a shame. the last two Impreza generations have been so plain, they just get lost in a crowd of Cobalts and Corollas. At least the late 90's / early 2000's Imprezas had some distinction. Ugly and/or cool, at least people talked about them. How does GM Ford and Hyundai (Kia, Honda, man- even the boxy Sentra looks cooler) manage to create stylish compacts nowadays and Subaru goes backwards 5 years? Plain is safe, and I still stand by the fact that they will sell more of this vanilla-mobile than any other Impreza before it. I couldn't agree more! In fact, when I look at this, the first thing that comes to mind is "Ford Focus". UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't understand why subaru has been struggling with the impreza design. 02 IHMO was the last year those looked good. But this is really ugly. It's sad when KIA can design a better looking car than Subaru.
MJ in PA
http://www.subaru.se/commonmedia/images/news/2011/110406/impreza_s.jpg The new Impreza is closer to the 4th gen Legacy than the previous gen Impreza. Which is a good thing, imo. But I still prefer my Legacy's smaller back doors, with the C pillar glass behind the door rather than incorporated into it. It allows the canopy to be stretched out a bit with a sleeker look, imo, and it makes for less unwieldy doors that are easier to open in tight spaces. But I guess they design everything for fat Americans nowadays, which means bigger doors. I still hate the exaggerated fender flare/wheel arch thing that Subaru seems to have fallen in love with. Sydtron
The narrow bit of glass you're referring to is a knock-off of the Hofmeister kink, a decidedly European design. The door is generally elongated to create more rear leg room without hindering trunk room when the rear suspension is low enough to pull off a trick like that. SubOperator
Subaru is moving more to mainstream. Good news for some, bad for others. I don't like the car on these pictures - looks like a cheap blend of Toyota Yaris and generic small econobox. Hoping the pics don't show the car properly - this happened to Subaru cars before. As noted before, it's sad when Korean car companies design beautiful cars and Subaru comes up with this. Sydtron
Funny, the Elantra looks more like a Yaris than the Impreza. It has a ridiculously high beltline for a car that shouldn't have visibility issues. http://i.imgur.com/EmJeq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/w4IxE.jpg Unless you're talking about the Forte, which is pretty similar to the current Impreza with a splash of Scion styling thrown in. The Impreza is more Citroen C5 and Altima. http://i.imgur.com/pp5na.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Wg0qq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/6nTeF.jpg
fahr_side
I don't get this move back to mirrors on stalks at all... so '70's... ugh. You gain a little glass for looking through where the mirrors ought to be, but certainly on the driver's side it's useless because at the angle you're looking through, it's so narrow as to be useless. Oh, and the blind spot behind the mirror... it's not gone, it just moved. How does this help anything? Subies4Life
I think the new Impreza sedan is a huge improvement over the current dorky Sedan Impreza. I am more interested in the wagon/hatchback variant the most. I am assuming the new 2012 Impreza will get the new FB20/25 engine with a 6 speed manual like the new Legacy. The 2013 WRX might also get this engine to 2.5 L bored out and stroked. Hopefully it gets direct injection, and still keeps with the rod actuated hydraulic/mechanical clutch linkage, and not the cable one that's in the new Legacy. MJ in PA
I will say, I like the cleaner, more conservative lines of the new Impreza better than the overly curvacious, stretched look of that Hyundai.
nightspeed98
Personally, the NY Autoshow is in 2 weeks. I don't care much for the NA at this point, but I will take some shots and post if anyone cares...
boymk123
You're insulting the Cruze +1 the Cruze looks 100 times better:rolleyes: I recently bought a new 5 bangers jetta for my sister, couldn't tell you how much I like it, it has a very clean look, decent power and fuel economy. Yea, its a base model for daily driver so don't expect heated leather seats with 0-60 in 5 seconds. If I'm not living in this Boston brutal winter weather, there is no way in he** I will buy any of the current Subaru models. I'm in a market for a new car now.. and Subaru is just being disappointed... should I wait a little longer? I mean the other models like the forester and legacy, they are not that bad looking, but they just lost their distinctive look (which I loved my 4th gen leggy for) among the crowds. and the huyndai elantra looks better than the yaris, not nice nice looking but better (too much stretching imo)
MatsuDano
I still feel like a lot of it's spirit is gone. Who knows, maybe I'll change my mind when I see it in person. Either way, it's not like I'm buying a new car anytime soon so...yea.

I said it looks better doesnt mean it's more functional, safer or run better or whatever, and yes, I'd love to have the Cruze over this fugly impreza at a heart beat

Max Capacity
Oh God, those exaggerated fender flares again. Fugly. The Chrysler 200 looks better. OUCH, what a slap in the face. But true, and I think the current crop of Chryslers less the challenger, are some of the worst looking cars in years. Good thing theres a forum like this where we can find good looking 05-09 Legacy's. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). StoplightAssassin
^mostly agree. I like the styling of the new 300. It's the car in Chrysler's line up that I'd possibly think about buying if there was an outside remote chance I'd consider purchasing a Chrysler. My first thought when I saw the hood on the new impreza was 'did they source that slap on top looking hood from the Dodge Caliber?' All I need now is a hill holder and a center passing light... Spec B 127
I am beginning to think all of the designers for the various car companies get together in a smoke filled room an see who can come up with the most boring car. After the most boring car is produced, each company then just tweaks the design for their company to ensure absolute boringness across the whole market. blklgt05
hmm.. I'll hold my judgement until WRX and STI version comes out. Cuz with the right wheels and a honeycomb sports grille + projector headlights, this car will have a much different feel to it. mod journal
