Th3Franz
Get a carbon fiber driveshaft. These guys make them for OEMs. The 370Z has a carbon driveshaft I'm pretty sure. http://www.acpt.com/driveshaft/driveshafts.html -Franz The end of a Legacy http://www.youtube.com/th3franz

lightweight14
Yes, but what exactly is your concern? The STi 6MT is rated around 550 ft..lbs torque. Mike I owned a 2005 OBP sti for about 2 years and according to iwsti members the transmission is not that reliable when it comes to hitting 500hp. I will more then likely go for 350hp on my LGT but want a transmission that is strong obviously. Wanted to get opinions and advice on other options then the sti transmission. NSFW
Oh well. If you're sure that's the right company, I'll call again and tell them I need a drive shaft for a "spec B", rather than for a "Legacy" and see if helps. And I'll see what it would cost to get one from ACPT, too. But, I've always thought that drive shafts and axles are probably the least interesting place to save weight, given the tiny radius. integroid
My car made 580whp on race gas and 475 on pump and drove around on a 6MT LGT daily without any problems. I do have the R180 rear end and Spec B rear axles but the only thing that isnt Subaru OEM is the cluth disc and pressure plate. The FW is even a stock STi. Can I break this tranny? I am sure if I drove it like a jackass daily with race gas...but 95% of my driving in this car is just cruising in traffic with a few hard pulls or launches here and there. I am sure this tranny will be fine for about 99.9% of the people on this board. Edited August 20, 2010 by integroid
Th3Franz
Have you held a drive shaft in your hands before? They are quite heavy From what I've researched, a carbon driveshaft has a similar effect of a lightweight flywheel. The power response is noticeably quicker. -Franz The end of a Legacy http://www.youtube.com/th3franz
HAMMER DOWN
NSFW, just called Driveshaft Specialist 1-866-455-6622. Talked to Jeff. They have the info. on my drive shaft. Front shaft 24.12", rear shaft 36.12". Uses 1310 XL u-joint & 2002 Forrester Wagon A/T carrier bearing with 05 LGT carrier bearing mounting bracket to bolt to the drive shaft tunnel. Hope this helps, Mike Edited August 21, 2010 by HAMMER DOWN Mileage:331487 Retired/Sold

NSFW
I'm fairly certain the only 3.9 R180 is the 04-05 as they have the 1:1 transfer gear. The others have 3.54 rear diffs and 3.9 front with a 1:1.1 reduction. At least I know 2007 is 3.54, however they may have changed it again for 2008 but I really don't think they did. EDIT: looked on cars101 and it verified that the 07+ is 3.54 rear diff final drive. I'll have to do some more research but those are the things that stuck out to me initially. Also the 04-05 are the transmissions with 35/65 split with dccd open. Ben I think you might be right about the R180 options, but I have conflicting information. Cars101.com says the 07 spec B has a 3.454 final: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/legacy/legacy2007.html#mechanical ...and the 08/09 have a 3.9 final: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/legacy/legacy2008.html#mechanical http://www.cars101.com/subaru/legacy/legacy2009.html#mechanical However this R180 page at opposedforces doesn't even list 3.9 as an option for the assembly or the ring/pinion set: http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b13/type_12/train/differential_individual/ Anyone know if Cars101 is wrong, or if opposedforces is just missing some part numbers? HAMMER DOWN
The R180 rear come from the STi with 3.90 final. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/wrxsti2005.html with 07 & ^ Spec.B rear half shaft. If your 6MT is 1:1.1 you need a 3.454 rear. Which gives you 3.90 final. So you need to know if your 6MT has a 1:1 transfer gear from front to rear, or 1:1.1 transfer gear from front to rear. That will tell you, if you need a 3.90 or a 3.45 rear diff.. Mike Mileage:331487 Retired/Sold
NSFW
I understand that, and I'm going to use an 04 or 05 STI 6MT, so I need a 3.9:1 diff. I'm trying to figure out if I can get an R180 with 3.9:1 and a helical diff. Was planning/hoping to use a Spec B diff but I'm not sure they exist with the right ratio. ShockerGT
Also, a little bit of information for those that get an STi shift linkage. You can buy a 07+ Spec B stay rod and shifter rod so that it puts the shifter in the center of the console opening. You will reuse the STi shift lever and reverse lockout cable as well as the rubber boot thing on the bottom. If you plan on upgrading to an aftermarket shifter and are using the STi shift linkage, only 04-07 STi lever will work as after having a discussion and sending pictures to Tom @ Kartboy, he said that only the 04-07 STi shift lever will work with the STi linkage setup. itsme
I found a stock LGT 5spd w/ 30K for $1300 to my door. So it will be here Wednesday. Soo I'm going to rebuild my stock one. It's about time I learned how to build a tranny:) I killed my center diff so I need to find a stonger one. I'm going to a LSD and upgrad the syncros if I can. I'm going to start a build a tranny thread. The goal is to make a strong tranny for a grand. My labor is free and I like to experiment. thanks for all the help. NSFW
The driveshaft is en route. I'm about to give up on getting a transmission from Rallispec, they were supposed to get back to me Tuesday, but have just ignored half of my emails and phone calls. Will talk to a local transmission shop this week about putting spec B gears into an STI 6MT.
