More rendering, this time from Japan.

Very TSX'ish from the front on this rendering.

I like the front, not that back so much. Maybe if it were a bit more square.

I can't believe we have to wait so long for this. I want it now.

Yeah, the rear needs more character, it's pretty blend in this rendering. Not feeling the SVX-esque black roof with WRC blue either.

Wasn't this the same japanese magazine source that completely got the 08 Impreza rendering predictions WRONG!!!!

Personally, I think the magazine rendering is crude, overly simplistic, and kinda ugly. I am hoping that subaru has learned from the Impreza and Tribeca, and can do better with toyota's help. As much as that pains me to say. it is a bit of blind leading the blind, but I think they can do better than this crude magazine rendering.

This magazine prediction is dubious at best. The Autocar.co.uk rendering is not really any better.

The only one I think might have some credibility of being anywhere close to accurate is this one: (and just because it is not overly developed and jumping the gun. The design hasn't even been greenlighted yet, according to most of the chatter.)

maybe it is a bit of wishful thinking, since this is the best looking one, as well.

That green one looks cool (probably the Toyota design because it has hints of the 70s Celica) but the blue one looks like typical Subaru poo. Very Saturn-esque.

Based upon my poo-meter, you can probably pencil that one in as Subaru's final design. The Aston-like sketch version would be the best, but that's assuming that they can come up with a final version that looks like the sketch, which I would not hold my breath for.

Too lazy to go through this thread for pics, but these popped up on edmunds

interesting... and I have seen them before, but I have no idea how accurate these actually are.

The yellow one looks like a 'chopped IS/tC coupe anyway.

Here's another one with the upper car, with graphics removed:

http://image.sportcompactcarweb.com/f/editorials/toyota-and-subaru-team-up-sports-coupe/7188285+w500+cr1+re0+ar1/toyota-subaru-rwd-boxer-coupe.jpg

Older SportCompactCarWeb article, image source

Still hoping that the sketch is more accurate than any of these renderings, the older ones being more likely fictional, and the newer ones being crude.

And if it looks like the copper/silver car, it is going to have a huge amount of space above the engine and under the hood skin. That car looks like a FWD car, the hood line is plenty high. Most subarus have a lower hood line than that. Legacy sure does.

If you step back from all the hype and supposition - it's a short wheelbase Impreza coupe/convertible with awd or the front diff/shafts omitted to give rwd.

The goal is also to make it a lot lighter. The stated target is apparently 2200 lbs (1000 kg)!

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/01/rumoured-new-ae86-more-details/

The car is based on "lightened" Impreza platform, which in term is the Legacy platform. The Impreza 2.0 NA weights in at ~3000 lbs. I'm not sure there is 800 lbs of fat to be trim from it to hit the 2200 lbs goal. I couldn't be happier if they can hit that target but I'm not very hopeful they will even get close.

two modest size doors, shortened wheelbase and shortened overhangs. No window frames. No moonroof. Thin interior panels and sound deadening. no power seats. extensive use of plastics on the bodywork, lighter drivetrain, including a RWD-specific transmission.

Less curb weight requires less suspension strength, so lighter components can be used there, as well. Hopefully not too weak, though. If anything can be over-engineered, I hope that is. The engines are already robust and reliable.

I think 2200lbs is a bit of a steep goal, but perhaps do-able. 2400-2800lbs would even be respectable, though.

Besides, even if they make the non-turbo, RWD, bare-bones optioned, bargain basement toyota variant might actually strip some weight out. That doesn't mean that the nicer variants, or AWD/Subaru variants will be that light.

Big part of that is safety systems. Boron steel superstructure, side impact beams, plethora of airbags....

Wheels and gizmos are probably minor, in comparison. there aren't THAT many more gizmos, and some electronics might actually weigh less than manual parts, like climate control knobs and cables being replaced by electronics and small stepper motors.

Nice thing about a coupe is that the B and C pillars are closer, and the roof structure is much smaller, and only one door frame opening per side. Less heavy materials higher in the body.

Frameless windows are also lighter :D

NVH isolation materials are also very heavy. I remember reading that modern car carries something like ~200 lbs of NVH materials. Toyota does have experience making very light sports coupes. The 7th gen Celica was ~2500 lbs and the last MR2 was only ~2200 lbs. I used to have a GT-S and I can tell you the Celica had very little NVH isolation material.

Good lord, I hope not.

The B5 TPH was one of the uglier subaru designs of late, and I thought they had come to the conclusion that the "schnozz" treatment was not a winner, and have moved away from it.

I call Shenanigans on this shred of internet.

This other bit, though...

http://news.windingroad.com/category/auto-news/subaru/

-text and graphic

http://news.windingroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/subyhl.jpg

The coupe depicted in the sketch above is said to come from a source inside of Subaru’s design department, and is meant to depict the upcoming rear-wheel-drive offering from the company.

It’s no secret that Subaru has been working with Toyota, which owns a four percent stake in the smaller company, on a shared coupe project that will be underpinned by Impreza gear. The two versions will differ in appearance, but will both offer Subaru’s 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter boxer fours in standard and turbocharged trim.

The source of the image also suggests that despite the planned RWD layout of the shared coupe, an AWD version hasn’t been ruled out for the top of the range. Subaru’s iteration of the car should be fully realized by this summer, with production slated to begin in 2010.

IF winding road can be believed, it is a bit more confidence in my previous assertion that the sketch is probably a better indicator than ANY of the other renderings that have surfaced recently or in the past, and for Subaru's sake, I hope that is accurate.

Interesting. So by this summer we may see some actual designs? :)

You'll see "artist's renderings" followed by "Spy Shots" and "Leaked Details". Then it will be released in Japan. SOA will figure out how to screw it up, THEN, you'll be able to see and test drive a reduced content USDM version wishing you lived in Australia so you got REAL Subarus.

:lol::lol::lol::mad:

You're just jealous that the Voices talk to Me.

Bingo,

Yahtzee,

Survey SAYS.... Ding Ding Ding Ding! You're just about right.

SOA, however is going to have a minimum of input, if the car is built in Japan, and imported. IF it were slated to be built at SIA, along side the Legacy, I would be much more suspicious of SOA's meddling.

I only say that because WRX STI survives mostly unscathed, by being imported, rather than SOA micromanaged, and built domestically for them.

so maybe there is a glimpse of hope that it won't be AS handicapped in the options list, as is the USDM Legacy offerings, compared to the JDM/ROW versions.

--------

Thank you for the grand canyon, and good luck with the apocalypse.
