Tehnation
The sealant and tape are for the oil galley plugs and bolts and things I unbolted before hot tanking. Plus extra oil pressure/temp gauge etc.
Tehnation
Finished filling all my piston rings to .024" ring gap, some might be .025 oh well. Its such a tedious job so I'll take it. I have 2 extra sets of rings already on the way for later on when I feel completely ocd and decide to redo a couple. Pistons and Rods are all prepped! Next task is putting the crank in and sealing the case halves together. Edited August 27, 2021 by Tehnation
Tehnation
So I was going to use the subaru gasket maker..... but this container seems like its for a caulking gun type deal, because its made from a very rigid plastic. I like to use my fingers. So I ordered Permatex Ultra Grey, much simpler to use..... like toothpaste lol https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-82194-12PK-High-Torque-Silicone-Gasket/dp/B000HBGI8K?th=1 In the meantime I'm gonna clean my bolts and oil pump, then change sealing washers on the case bolts. I wiped down the mating surfaces with a rag, brillo pad and some brake cleaner. Don't forget to put in your gaskets, there are 3 smaller black ones for the oil galleys and 1 larger orange one for the water jacket. Tehnation
Hmmm, jcspods reached out to ask me what color I want it painted, tan or black. Interesting didn't even know I had options. I am thinking tan.
Tehnation
Case halves are together, main bolts torqued to 37lbs and external to 20lbs. Next step Pistons! Almost done! 6 long internal/crankshaft bolts, the ones with the rubber ring washers that go in water jackets 2 short internal/crankshaft bolts that go in the front with metal washers 2 long internal/crankshaft bolts that go in the back with metal washers 6 external bolts 1 longer external bolt that goes in front bottom under oil pump 1 small crossover pipe bolt 12mm 12pt for internal/crankshaft bolts 12mm 6pt for the external bolts 10mm 6pt for crossover pipe bolt Edited September 1, 2021 by Tehnation
Tehnation
Anyone got a link to oil pump install? Can't remember where u put the sealant. And does anyone know if that back plate cover for cylinder 3 needs sealant? Edited September 1, 2021 by Tehnation
awfulwaffle
Back plate gets RTV around the perimeter. So does the oil pump. There's also a couple of bolts that need some sealant, would have to consult FSM for which.
Tehnation
For Manley pistons, top ring always goes south, 2nd ring goes north, and oil ring expander points south. The ring rails for the expander are tabbed and can only go in the notches. Theres an arrow on the top of the piston pointing to the front, and all arrows must point towards the front. Tehnation
Ok so I found it on page 1780 of vacation pics, but it says something about putting sealant on 3 bolts for the oil pump, doesn't say which though or I missed it.....
Tehnation
NM, figured it out it looks like the 3 bolts on the passenger side of block. And the sealant goes here. And the back cover Edited September 1, 2021 by Tehnation

Subaru Mike says he uses ultra grey for everything so I will use ultra grey for both the oil pump and back cover. I do have some RTV black but I like this ultra grey stuff, easy to work with and dries fast.
Tehnation
I want to break these screws on my oil pump to check for contamination. I think I will need a phillips head socket of some sort. As for my intake cams, I'm just gonna roll the dice, they have about 50 miles on them.... not going to buy new ones.... again. Anyone know what size/number Phillips to use without stripping the heads? Edited September 1, 2021 by Tehnation

Tehnation
So I went to autozone got me Phillips #2 and #3. Also picked up some star bits.... but now that I am back at work, I realize they are the wrong bits so I ordered a company 23 socket for the avcs cams. At least I can use the socket holder to hold the phillips bits. Thought they were 6 pts but apparently they are 5 so this: https://www.oakos.com/C23-510.htm
Max Capacity
Why do you think you have crap in the oil pump ? Just pour some gas in it, swish it around and dump it out on a clean paper towel. If it comes out dirty then take it apart or flush it more. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Not sure if the bearing material made its way through the system. I don't think it did.... but I'll try that method, and keep it moving. Yea screw all that nonsense..... I stripped the bolts on my avcs last time I tried messing with it, don't know why I think this time will be different lol.
Max Capacity
I would think the second time removing those avcs bolts should be easier. With a proper bit and an impact driver, I would think you'd be ok. I was amazed at how easy the 30+ year old water pump bolts in my 86' F150 came out. I did spray them with Aero-Kroil and used my 3/8" butterfly impact gun.
