Got some head tonight...

All valves in spec (on the loose half of the spec, but all within tolerances) so I managed to get the heads, cams and cam covers installed. That was 2 hours. Putting it back together is much slower than taking it apart.

More progress over the last two days. Total of 6 hours in the assembly of this engine so far.

This is where I am leaving it for tonight. Next big things are intake manifold and turbo, then it's just pipes/wires/tubes. I was hoping to have the engine ready to install by the end of this weekend, I I may get 99% there but the fat 90deg breather hose that goes from the crossover to the block needs to be replaced. I'll place the order tomorrow and hopefully get it this coming week. All goes well, I'm hoping next weekend the engine will get put back in the car...

I might just not be able to see it in the pictures but did you install the oil dipstick tube yet? It should be done before installing the timing belt cover as you can't slide it between the block and timing belt cover.

 

It is not installed yet. I had no trouble removing it with the cover in place - did it during my turbo swap. Also, my teardown pictures show that I removed it dipstick before the timing cover.

I'm making a point of reinstalling things in reverse order of removal even it if means halting work for a missing part or passing up what looks like an obvious shortcut - my experience is replete with many examples of disassembling stuff I already put together because it was in the way of something I need to install later.

 

To be clear: I don't disagree that it's better to install the disptick tube first - it's just my process is a product of 25 years of working myself into a corner then wasting time getting back out. If I do this again I'll probably take the cover off before the dipstick. Right after I roll the car into the river.

I'm just amazed you removed it with the timing covers in place!

 

I tried when installing my new oil pan to bend it for better fitment but couldn't remove it. Then when I searched there apparently are none who could.

 

Well, I only have the heads & TGVs in place so maybe it's the intake manifold that gets in the way. The only thing I had to do was flex the mount up and over the TGV and it dropped into place.

 

I have to replace the PCV hose to the block, the L-shaped breather hose to the block just next to it, the turbo oil return hose and the turbo air intake hose. All but PCV were in stock at my local Subaru dealer so more progress tonight, I hope.

More progress. Just need to loosely install the turbo, PCV pipe and O2 sensor and it'll be ready to put back in the car.

 

8 hours on the reassembly so far. Give me another 30 mins and I'll be ready to put the engine on the hoist.

Short night tonight. New PCV assembly in place, then loosely installed the turbo, and installed the O2 sensor. Turbo is loose so I can get it past the trans bellhousing more easily.

 

After 8.5 hours of assembly work, the engine is ready to be put back in the car. Planned for this weekend.

No real progress tonight - just attached the load leveller on 3 points (A/C bracket bolt, P/S bracket bolt and rear lifting eye) and did a test lift - it sits almost level left/right, and can be tilted backwards/forwards using the load leveller. This will hopefully result in a much more controlled install this weekend. The turbo is still loose so it should be easier to move out of the way to allow the trans and engine to meet up.

 

Dare I imagine that the engine might start up for the first time this weekend?

After 2 hours, the engine is bolted into place. About 30 mins was wasted by the fact that one of the locating pins in the engine block was left behind on the trans so the bellhousing wouldn't go together... Had to pull it back out and drive the pin out of the trans with a punch.

So it's 8.5 hours of engine assembly and 2 hours of installation so far.

Interesting. Took off the timing belt & pullies, cam pullies and oil pump.

 

No smoking gun...

 

The entire inside of the timing belt cover is coated with a fine mist of oil so I can't tell where it started from. The best I noticed was that the cam seals were not 100% seated and each tapped down about 1/16" more when I checked to see if they were seated properly.

 

So, the plan is to put some UV dye in the oil, re-assemble everything but not the (timing covers) and then run the engine under a blacklight until I see where the oil is coming from (IF any more oil comes out - it may have been the cam seals)

 

I've cleaned the face of the engine, and I'll do the same with all the pullies and rear timing covers.
