The game changed while the plane was developed because of SAMs. A high altitude, fast, penetrating bomber became impossible with SAMs, so the slowed the plane down and made a low altitude bomber. Carter canceled it before the mission switch becz he knew the B2 stealth bomber was in development. Reagan then reinstated the B1 becz pretty airplane! FJuan Posted September 6, 2016 Share Posted September 6, 2016 Speaking of planes, this British Vulcan bomber impressed me the most this weekend at the "Open Cockpit" show. This plane was massive, almost as big as the B52. Amazing how the pilots were able to fly this plane with such little visibility. Pics of the side, rear, Nav & Ordinance seat area, and pilots seats. The SAM threat was already established and the ICBM was the nuclear delivery vehicle of choice over a decade before the B-1A (see B-70 cancellation). The Bomber boys in the Pentagon simply refused to admit it. Funny, I think the Fighter Mafia is doing the same thing with the F-35 right now The payload capacity of the B-1B is staggering.
