  1. FYI, 2020 Outback is getting a turbo XT model again. 2.4L DI flat 4 with 6 speed CVT. Similar power as 4th gen NA and turbo models, but a decent boost to mpg and an 800 lb boost to towing. Maybe in 2023 i'll start looking at used cars...
  2. OR BETTER YET! rent something on outdoorsy. Sure it might cost $120 a day, but you don't have the up front investment, storage, and redic depreciation. Or the sadness if you look at it for years without using it. I've definitely gotten to the place where i don't have time to have regrets. If i/we really want to do something, there's no time like now. Granted, we won't become vanlife gypsys or anything...
  3. Jump in with both feet! Treading water while trying not to drown is a good first step with great motivation. Thw obxt's are rated to tow 1500 without trailer brakes, and you can still load up the car with 800lbs of gear, depending on distribution. Or just get a chow trailer with a RTT and an awning. My wife got our 1500 lb trailer for 2.5k. not cheap, but cheap for a trailer that sleeps 6 and has a kitchen and table, all at the same time. 13' though, so it takes up some space, and we have an hoa, so not in the driveway...
  4. i used to want a little trailer that had a spot for a table, beds for 4+ and a cook spot (all indoors). tent trailer, small Scamp, Taxa cricket, etc. then i wanted a tall sprinter, etc. that had that all inside (car + trailer in one!). now i'm back to wanting a trailer, but maybe something smaller like a Taxa Tigermoth with a 4 person RTT above. interior eating and gathering place, awning for covered area (sun/rain), and a roll out cooking area. easy to store, easy to pull, and everything you need. and you don't try to cram a DD and camper into one vehicle (cause i can't imagine having a van that's JUST for camping...). hmm.... cept the dog. hadn't thought about him this last go round. back to the drawing board... Also, the 2019 Sprinter 4x4 has just arrived in NA (EDIT: north america... not naturally aspirated. Actually, i have no idea what engine.). 2 delivered so far and one at the local van converter.
  5. Just wanted to share that i was browsing some car magazine and there was an article about a swapped subaru wagon who had a version 8 sti motor. They stated that the jdm v8 sti motor was special because it had forged internals (from the factory). Lol. Cept cast pistons, just like all ej20 and ej25's of the same generation. The only real difference is the displacement and turbo. Anyways, back to the regular show...
  6. So far so good on the new rad! (while knocking on wood...) The OBXT is a much nicer car than the corolla i drove while parts came in.
  7. Also, there is new foam you can buy but it's like $50 total from heuberger, vs the $120 radiator i installed.
  8. Now these comments that i read make total sense. Like, what do i do about the foam stuck to the old radiator? Why isn't there a foam kit for new radiators? Gah...
  9. someone got with their waifu...
  10. meh, want the 5k towing capacity, reliability and 6 cylinder. don't want to get into another 4 cylinder turbo as the second and only other car. we're looking at a 2016 anyways, and the ascent is too new as well. let them work out the design flaws. it seems like the top hose helped it crack right there, as the crack started right under the hose connection. maybe from the radiator sitting still and the engine rocking and vibrating from use.
  11. Looks like it's A13091 for the OEM koyo and VH091662 for the super koyo all Al. looks like we're about to buy a Honda Pilot, so no need for a super radiator. $115 including S&H from THM motorsports. about $275 for the all Al koyo. honestly, if it was an OE core, i'd totally get an all Al koyo rad, but i don't live in a hot place and don't push my car... OEM from Heuberger is $220 plus shipping. gonna see if the local dealer will match heuberger prices so i don't have to wait for shipping on hoses and caps and such. i am thinking of getting a spec B shift trim panel though, for $135... (replace my cracked pleather that's all crinkly sounding on the first shift of a cold morning)
  12. well, i noticed the rad fans being on last night when i got home (20 minute highway commute) and then forgot about it till halfway through my drive to work this morning. so head gasket might not be far behind... filled it with DI at work and will take it back home. might try to patch but i'm hoping to not drive it again till it's replaced early next week. Koyo is the current preferred replacement, yeah? not gonna get a full aluminum. but will get dealer upper and lower and new caps while i'm at it.
  13. i thought it was the crimps, but it seems to be a giant crack! i didn't notice what looks to be a big crack until i went to get this picture to post it.
  14. discovered i have a potential leaking stock rad. Looks like i'll get the direct replacement koyo and some new caps. and coolant. etc.

  16. i guess i left that tidbit out! it's a diode dynamics LED flasher module, aftermarket. replaced all my running lights with LED, mostly Sylvania ZEVO's, so had to get an aftermarket flasher to rid myself of the hyperflash. turns out they have a 3 year warranty, so i started that with them, except their out of stock for 4-8 weeks... makes it hard to signal when your blinkers won't blink though.
  17. yeah, so my turn signal module is dying. sometimes it clicks away at a light as it should, sometimes it just freezes on. when it first started happening, i thought i was going a little crazy and just imagining that it was skipping a beat from time to time! at least it's only $10-ish, but a pain that it only lasted 2 years...
  18. i was gonna say, for a daily, why not get something like the posi-quiet (or whatever) that has low(er) dust? and if you flush your fluid, you'll get a little performance boost too.
  19. your link sends me to an old thread started by tide in 2004... (using tapatalk on my phone)
  20. no offense, but i think we have the b team here...
  21. i'm pretty sure it's just a display, so should do no harm to have it unplugged. and i've been testing that theory for years.
  22. yeah, would be nice to have that in the outback. have having an aux cord that plugs into my phone whenever i want to listen to portable music. I actually mostly listen to the engine and random clunks and whirs that the car makes instead, as i imagine new ways to invent the wheel.
