I have surefire flashlights, I think they are pretty good, I like that their batteries have a billion year shelf life. But I'm sure there are better options out there. Just my .02.... I'm institutionalized

^ You're not institutionalized, at all. If my life depended on a flashlight, I'd only use a few brands, and that list truncates even further if they are weapon-mounted. SureFire comes in on both lists. Yes, the M6 is too bright for indoor tactical use, particularly with the hot bulb, but that's the one I have in my nightstand, as it's just as likely that I'd use it as my wife would, for some emergency which may well not be of the "tactical" sense. There's a SureFire in our vehicles' emergency packs, too, and also in other spots in my house.

----

fishbone, bro -

Sadly, I've been out of the hobby way, way too long to render a good recommendation, fishbone - for that, I apologize. I've been out since 2004, and since then, I'll give you just one example that'll knock your socks off, and put the worthless nature of anything I may say on this subject into good context.....

In 2003, I was among the first to have purchased the then-new SureFire L6. At $300, retail, it was the then-top-of-the-line LED counterpart to the M6. No, the L6 wasn't anywhere near as bright, particularly if you're like me, and have the hot bulb in the M6 :D, but it was, at that time, top-of-the-line "tactical" LED, and there was nothing else like it, on the open retail market (custom stuff? sure - but retail? nope!).

Two years ago, after one of my ARC LSs died, I decided to refresh my daily-use compliment, including what I carry in the cars. I spent something like $250-$300 or so, and equipped our two Subarus with a four Fenix P2D-CE Q5s (in the cabin cubby in my car, in the trunk in my wife's, one "actual EDuse" for me, and one for my daughter [on "flashlight day," all the kids (3 and 4-year olds) wanted to use her flashlight, which was the brightest and most feature-rich ]), a P1D-CE in her cabin cubby, and the garage with a L1D Q5.

So you can see how out-of-date I am, right?

So, with that in-mind - I'm pretty sold on the Fenix brand. They're good little products, durable enough for what we'd use it for as "average Joes," not slaving it to a firearm or the like. Affordable and feature-rich, what else is there to ask for? And FWIW:

Yeah, the coveted #1 spot. That don't come along too often.

But the TerraLUX?

Damn, bro, for $30, you could do no worse spending that at the local "Gentlemen's Club." In so far as I can recall, all I've read about it has at least the words "good enough for the price" associated with it. :) Given the "over-the-counter @ Target" price of the Maglite-brand drop-in replacement LED "stars," the TerraLUX looks to be a bargain.

But if I were you? I think I'd go for the Fenix.

Then again, you're talking to a guy who forks out about $100 a year on CR123 cells.

^ It's insane only if you don't collect flashlights! :p:redface:

Of their C/G/E/P-series, 2- and 3-cell models, I've got more than I can count.... Some serve standard duty, others are the basis/chassis for custom modifications that friends have done for me, over time.

:)

Yeah, I know, I'm a nerd.

I still EDC my E2D (MN03), and on the weekends, I ditch my "EDuse" Fenix for my old E1e/KL1. On my keychain is an ARC-AAA Premium.

In my car, along with the Fenix mentioned above, I've got my SureFire L6 in the trunk storage compartment, and a SureFire C2/Z2 (P61 lamp) in a pouch, along with my emergency tool. SC1 spares carrier with an extra lamp, plus batteries.

The wifey's FXT has, along with the Fenix compliment (also in the side-pouch of an emergency tool, with spare batteries), a ShakeLight and a custom 1W high-dome (built back in 2003, it was quite pimp, then! http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/images/smilies/lol.gif) 3x123-cell powered Mag 2C conversion for general emergency use, resting on the rear storage divider.

Nerd.

A torch hurts the skin as well. Fleshlight doesn't if used in moderation.

^ Wiser words have never been spoken.

my M3 CL is painfully bright, and the 6 is more than double the lumens. it actually hurts your skin if you shine it at your arm.

^ You wanna talk uncomfortable....my old ARC LSs were the perfect demonstration of heat-sinking.

Held-in-hand, they could be operated continuously until they depleted the CR123 cell. Sure, the thing got warm, but it never got uncomfortably hot.

Leave it sitting on a desk for some minutes, and then try to pick up.

Ouch.

Yep, that little sucker used YOU as the heat sink. Smart.

^ That particular one is rated at 80 lumens and 90 bucks :)

Yeah, the coveted #1 spot. That don't come along too often.

What, no Pelican on that list? Actually, it looks like they have not reviewed our 2360 AA light that would be similar, although they did seem to like our CR123 2330 & 2390 lights:

I work for Pelican, although I work on their Case products, not Lights. We make some decent stuff, but I admit that even our lights engineers have been wowed by some of our competitor's products. The 2360 is a nice, solid light, but I have to say that style-wise, it just doesn't look nearly as 'cool' as some of the other brands. The 2390 is a pretty kick-ass light.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!

^ I keep reaching for this when puppy has to do her business before bed. It can jack-light the deer in the field from 50+yards and can double as a beat-down club in case some young buck gets any ideas.

^I am sorry, but although I do appreciate the maglite suggestions, they no longer interest me for "serious business" flashlights quite simply due to their light output and most importantly poor electronic regulator performance. It is, apparently, way underdriven and after it warms up, the light output decreases even more.

By "serious business" flashlights I mean high lumen output.
