What kind of watch do you wear/own?

I'm in the "save up and get the real thing, or don't bother" camp (and anybody with a job can afford one over time. It's a decent investment and portable store of wealth). If you're into watches enough to want a perfect replica of the real thing, rather than a cheaper knockoff, then you'll appreciate the amount of blood, sweat, tears, and genius that went into the Rolex. Everyone else is just playing copy-cat.

I don't particularly like Rolex watches, but if I were going to rock a Roley, a nice older Submariner would be on the short list. Mostly, I appreciate their engineering, and innovation. That's the main reason to put something like this on your wrist. Otherwise, it's just jewelery (which there are better watches/brands for, anyway).

I understand the sentiment. But keep in mind the Submariner was based off the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Watches are like many other things. Most everything has been done. There's bound to be duplicates after a hundred years.

I can't justify that amount of money for a watch. I could buy another Miata or put a watch on my wrist....

Miata = depreciation, ghey and will die

Rolex = holds and or increases in value, manly, and will never die

I was 0.

And I'm still a zero.

Submariner will probably be my next watch.

Mine will be an IWC or an Omega Speedmaster.

One out of several yes because that's what it came with

Don't start timex fanboy :p

Ironman's are great watches for what they're made for!

Actually, timex (in general) are good watches for their price point.

Nah, the Sub is not even a little bit based off the Fifty Fathoms, other than the fact that they are both 50's diving watches. The FF just beat the Sub to market.

Look at the first Submariner, versus the first Fifty Fathoms. The rolex design is iconic (and has hardly changed). It is the look that all the copy-cats are modeling themselves after, not the Blancpain. In fact, the Blancpain has morphed to look more like the Sub, than the other way around.

Here are the original models from 1953:

While the 6204 was the first Submariner, by the time the British Ministry of Defence had completed testing, Rolex had replaced it with the 6200.

By comparison, here is the first actual Fifty Fathoms. You will see a lot of key items te Submariner took off of: dot indicators, rotating bezel, triangle pip. By the time Blancpain added 12, 3, 6, 9, Rolex followed suit shortly there after on the 6200.

The Blancpain is definitely a nicer watch (it also costs a multiple of what the Rolex does). I also realize it's in a whole different class of refinement, and they don't make very many.

However, saying that the Sub's design is based off the Fifty Fathoms is incorrect. They were both designed to solve the same problems, as a military diving watch. They needed a high-contrast dial, high-pressure case, big enough to manipulate with gloves, etc, etc. So, the visual similarities are there, but only because of those basic tenets. The pictures tell the story in terms of style, and the imitators are copying the Sub, not the FF.

I think anybody would take the $15k watch before the $5k watch, but I'd likely never own a watch like the FF. I might own a Sub though, because it's more accessible, and utilitarian (lol). You could dive with a Submariner. Wouldn't want to dive wearing a FF. If I want something fancy, there are other watches that offer better pedigree and better value. Blancpain is also owned by Swatch, so, there's that

looks nice. please post pics when you get it.

Look what arrived waaaaay ahead of schedule...

Initial impressions: it's a Seiko 5. Looks fine, built fine. Does hack, does hand-wind. Lume is good. Bezel has more play than I'd like, but then again my perception of bezel tightness is a little messed up because of the needlessly secure bezel on the Mako that I wear a lot. In any event, I don't really think it'll move on its own, and I can't really complain for the price. Bracelet is ok but doesn't have solid endlinks. Buckle is fine. Again, not in a position to complain, and it's not going to see any bracelet time anyway, so I don't really care.

I took a few quick pics - will do some better ones tomorrow in the daylight.

  • 3 weeks later...

Lot of nice stuff in here. I only have cheap watches but I wear one everyday. I have a few Timex Weekenders, a Seiko 5 (black dial, black strap), and a basic / "classic" G Shock DW5600E that probably gets the most use.

Wish list:

Shinola Sport Chrono. 42mm case. gunmetal dial and bracelet.

Autodromo Stradale. 40mm case. cream dial, brown strap.

That case to strap proportion on that autodromo....

Which is a shame, because they look kind of cool.

I agree, but I think it is really exaggerated in that photo and looks better on the wrist. In general their stuff is really cool and unique automotive-influenced styling, but I can't justify buying one because I think they're very over-priced for what they are.
