I don't think anyone here has Feals on a 5th Gen.

Soon enough there will be.......;)

On that note, I'm not sure if I missed it in this thread, but do any other year WRX/STi's front strut bars fit? I know I read a post about the rear, but can't recall the fronts. And perhaps another question, if I upgrade my TMIC in the future are there fitment issues with said strut bar installed?

Since installing one, I've noticed that the front end flops/jumps/fumbles/barfs around less on rough roads, bumps, etc. The hood flops around noticeably less.

I'm not claiming it helps handling in a highway or track situation, however, just that it has added some rigidity in situations where the car is being cycled through suspension loading.

  • 2 weeks later...

I firmly believe in quantitative objectivity - but when it comes to suspension systems, how might one measure such a thing in an objective way... Any suspension characteristic? What about "harshness" or road holding or other subjective feely things? The reality is that it doesn't matter what the numbers are, it ONLY matters what it FEELS like, because that's what we do it for - a feeling of satisfaction.

The answer is yes, though, I could, but I won't because the equipment to test it would cost far more than the strut bar itself. Using a fixed mount high speed camera, strain gauges, and accelerometers, a person could record the movement of the hood and correlate that with suspension impacts and body deformations. Is it worth it? Of course not.

Here is a simple experiment. Jack up the front of your car by the center front jack point. Measure the distance between the strut tower bolts side to side. Put weight on it again and repeat... I did that and it moved several mm. That means there is flex and that means bracing could be benificial.

Prove me wrong.... With science

Currently in the process of having EM USA produce coilovers for the 5th gen. They sell both 08-11 WRX and 06-07 WRX Coilovers, however our cars share all the 08-11 WRX components except for the top hats, which it shares with the 06-07 WRX. All they would have to do is assemble some sets involving 08-11 WRX coilovers with 06-07 WRX front camber plates, and you have a 10-14 LGT coilover set for less than $400 bucks. I got my set this weekend and asking them about swapping the front top plates. So far they are cooperating. Will keep you guys posted. $399 is hard to beat for 8k/6k coilovers that have camber adjustment and pillowball mounts. CEO of this company is ex sales director for D2 racing North America, so the quality and build is comparable at a fraction of the cost of a new set of D2 racing coilovers ($995+)

2 steps of spring rate is not right for our cars. It's what is typically put on the GR chassis, but our chassis is longer and heavier. You need the same spring rate all the way around, and if you want the rear softer, only 1 step max.

Thanks, I will run this by them.

Thanks, I will run this by then.

All you need to do is look at the specs for Tein, Megan, RCE, Eibach, Swift, etc, for our cars for both lowering springs and coilover setups, and you will see that the spring rates are generally the same, or very close, both front and rear.

Okay update.. I stand corrected and had my values wrong. The Spring rates are 8KG F/8KG R (makes sense because they are for the WRX anyway which requires even rates as well). More info to come.

So much tease, so little useful information.

Thought you knew...

AST 4150 coilovers 9k front 10k rear all swift springs with swift helpers. No rear sway bar, factory front sway bar.

i find that with the weight and length of the lgt that the extra weight just doesn't want to turn. The goal was to control turn-in with spring rates, rather than sway bar. I went 10k rears with the whiteline supermassive (i forget the size) rear race bar and found that the snap oversteer was... a tad excessive. So i removed it during an auto-x day and found that it was perfect. so the supermassive stayed off and as a plus, my ride quality improved quite a bit.

EDIT: It's not a setup for everyone. MOST people on here will find that matching rates front to back is sufficient for the driving that they do. Matching rates would keep the car predictable, just more firm. I'm not going to lie and say that my first time out on the coilovers and fat bar was flawless, i almost got kicked out for wiping cones off the course after losing the car twice.

Hi

I'm running on stock 225/50 R17 10 spokes wheel with stock strut and spring.

I really like the 08 Spec B 18 wheels but then what do I need to get it fit to my car? Any spacer and wheel combo? I plan to run on 225/40 R18 would that be ok with no fender roll?

Thanks

They will fit fine and still be far from the fenders. IIRC they are 18x7+55 and you are running 17x7+48. The 225/40-18 is going to be shorter and look small, you really should run a 22/45-18 which is the stock tire size for the GT.

UPDATE: Installed the coilovers over the weekend and here are a few key takeaways:

1) Rear coilovers bolt up just fine, but they require to be adjusted to max lowered height (both spring and body) to match the height that the front sits at with the factory settings. I am not sure if the WRX has a deeper rear strut tower that requires more length, but this can be corrected with a shorter coilover spring than the 8" the kit brings (6" or 7" perhaps)

2.) Front strut camber plate mount MUST be swapped to 06-07 WRX. The seller was able to swap these out without any hassle, and gave me a full refund when I returned the original 08-14 WRX plates that came with the kit.

3.) Front lower strut mount had to be re-slotted in the Legacy's bolt circle. This was the most painful modification of all, since it required invasive, drilling and machining of the lower mount to accept the legacy's narrower bolt circle. I am not sure if any other model year WRX's have a matching lower front strut mount to the 5th gen legacy, but it would not hurt to find out. maybe the 06-07 strut fits 100% and therefore could make the entire job much easier (Just order 2EA Front 06-07 WRX units, and 2EA Rear 08-14 WRX Units).

4.) Ride quality is pretty good for a -$400 set of full coilovers. The spring rate is 8K all around, and the struts are about medium to medium hard in the stiffness category. Little to no bouncing at all, and even on crappy roads, the car always feels in control. I will obviously report back in 6 months and then one year to provide feedback on how they are holding up, but for now I love them. Perhaps might be able to set up a group buy if we can determine the lower front mount situation.

Here is a reference photo showing how the anodized blue color matched the

Megan 22mm sway bar:

Here is how the car sits at the moment:
