godwhomismike
My first car was a 1986 Ford Escort, which cost me $400, and was a death trap. It looked like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/29e3ywp.jpg It had a giant rust hole in the trunk, which if you were sitting in the back seat and turned around, you could look down and see the street. It also used to overheat after 20 minutes of driving on summer days, and I had a wheel/tire break off by itself once while driving it. Anything over 55mph, the car felt like it would break apart from the shaking. The exhaust was so rusted apart, that it fell off the car while driving as well. It was such a horrible car, I worked 60-80 hours a week all summer, and also had a second job as well, and saved up to buy a car that fall. By late August, I had several thousand saved, and put a meaty downpayment on a brand new 1998 Kia Sephia, which I got brand new (right off the truck) for $10,250 (4AT, A/C, AM/FM/CD). I financed the rest for 5 years, since I was starting college at the time. The car last about 7.5 years before electrical issues made me have to dump it. oddseth
Lots of great cars here. Loved the streetrod bug kit with the engine out back. This is like a do-it-yourself 911. I bet it was fun to swing the ass of the car around a turn. My first was a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix SE white with gold rims and baby doo-doo tan interior. The wheels were actually pretty sweet, were 16" /225, and looked good on the car. The interior looked like a giant, overtextured plastic robot but it was quite functional. I rocked the car discman because this baby only had am/fm cassette. My dad helped me buy it since he was going to use it as a bad weather car (he had a miata). It was basically a stripped SE with the engine upgrade (up from a 160 hp 3.1L V6), sport suspension, alloy wheels, and nothing else. It was actually a pretty decent driver with a torquey 3.8L/195 hp - 230 ftlbs/V6 and it would pull away from most cars from the light but it understeered like a mofo, especially in the rain. I once was taking some fast turns with some friends in the car but hit a wet spot and almost slid into a ditch. My friends still rag on me for doing it. She wound up throwing her serpentine belt when I was coming home from work in 2001 and then continued to have transmission, torque converter, and engine sensor problems when I gave it to my brother to borrow so I traded her in for a 2002 Altima. I will always miss peeling off from the line without breakstarting and fighting the torque steer with the crude traction control turned off. This is not my car, but it is identical in appearance. Not bad for 90's GM design. http://images.autotrader.com/images/2009/3/11/234/803/10821622928.234803718.IM1.MAIN.565x421_A.562x421.jpg http://images.autotrader.com/images/2009/3/11/234/803/10821622931.234803718.IM1.04.565x421_A.562x421.jpg

IwannaSportSedan
Yup. I had a 93 GT a while back... nice car. Unfortunately FWD... That car with a Legacy GT drivetrain... would be fantastic. Mine was Electric Currant Red, just a slight hint more purple than my Garnet Red Pearl Legacy... But I always wished it had been that dark blue, like rouar's car. rouar
Thanks guys. Sadly that car rarely ran right, and was never in 100% condition. I had rose-colored glasses on when I bought that car. I found a '96 black Probe GT, fully loaded with sunroof, for half a grand cheaper. But the shop had no interest in selling the car, refused to let my dad and I test drive it (because "the salesman was not there that day"), and never contacted me despite a few calls back to them indicating interest. That week I found two other Probes via private seller. Although this one had no options whatsoever, it was the right price, low mileage (75k). I did not take it to a mechanic to inspect. Over that winter, the body rust over the windshield progressed, the Maaco-painted bumper peeled (shown in that first pic), and various things failed without warning. My own stupidity contributed .. for example I discovered two months after buying that the engine idle hunting occurred because the coolant reservoir was bone dry. I almost went off the road in a blizzard because I had bought brand new tires -- not knowing there was a difference between summer tires and all-seasons. After the car spent all July off the road for a problem that three different mechanics couldn't figure out (car would die when you pressed on the throttle, the exact solution escapes me at the moment), I gave up. Being a college freshman with only a part-time job, I couldn't afford to keep fixing everything that went wrong, so I got rid of it. Despite a 3rd gear grind, it did have the best shifter and clutch feel in any car I've owned. Very glad I learned to drive stick in that car. I miss the handling too, especially with those sticky tires. Some more photos.. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o150/rouar/DSC00115.jpg http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o150/rouar/DS2_0010.jpg
IwannaSportSedan
Mine ran pretty well... There was one christmas incident that had me stranded at my parent's house (I was in college at the time) while the auto parts store couldn't grasp the fact that it was a MAZDA, not a ford, underneath, and kept ordering me a Ford F150/Mustang/Panther platform external ignition coil, not the very specific one that was inside the cam-driven distributor on the side of the Mazda V6's forward head, at the end of the valve cover. They ordered the wrong part 3 times, after three explanations. The actual replacement took barely an hour, once I had the part, but otherwise the engine wouldn't start. I too looked at multiple cars... a Lexus dealer had a black 94 with horribly cracked paint. for 7k (this was 1999, at the time), where a private seller had one in her garage, selling for less than 6K with full options minus leather, better paint, and fewer miles. I was a bit sad to sell the car for a Ford Ranger pickup, but I did use the pickup for a while... but when I no longer really did, I worked to move toward the Legacy. The BL Legacy is a better car in almost every way, aside from cargo versatility on the sedan. Wagon fixed that, until it disappeared from the US. Aside from the bodystyle difference, though, my BL Legacy GT improves on the same qualities that I liked about my Probe GT, and fixes the only real problem... FWD understeer. It didn't torque steer that much, but the Legacy doesn't at all. I still think a meld between the Probe GT's liftback hatch and more modest overall size, (a common trait with the ST160-series 85-89 and the ST230-series, the last gen Celicas... the other ones are pretty much ALL uglier.) and SVX's good qualities otherwise, and built on BL Legacy/GR Impreza's chassis layout... such a 3-door coupe with RWD/AWD should be Toyota/Subaru's target. Styled and optioned well, right into GenCoupe's segment, but also including NA-flat 4 power, in addition to Turbo H4, and H6... would be a KILLER product in that segment. ThatGuyDownUnder
I am sure you all know what a 92 accord coupe looks like. I am also sure that some of you know what one looks like when you snap a rod... Take it easy baby, no need for this meanness. burnu2
Mine was a 1992 Dodge Shadow ES v6 5spd that was given to me however did not run, replaced a sensor and got it running fine. Believe it or not that thing was quick, I used to run mustangs in HS lol. Looked kinda like this but more less covered in rust. I had to learn how to drive a manual which was interesting, my first time I drove it I did a nice burnout. I ended up breaking the timing belt and killing the engine, then my mother bought a new car and gave me her 94' Corolla... Blew the stock 7afe and swapped in a 4age 20v blacktop and the 6spd levin transmission. THAT was fun, stock ITBs with the velocity stacks and it sounded like a motorcycle going down the road at 8500rpms. The intake noise was louder then the exhaust. Blew that up by dodging a truck and running into a waterfilled ditch hydro-locking the motor. Then I had a 12 second 92 MR2 turbo (Stripped turbo oil feed head banjo and sold the car). then a 77' Corolla 2TG (sold), and now the Legacy. http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/166/381/25412690003_large.jpg
