damn this is tempting. looks real nice.

it's probably as easy to install as replacing the factory bulb. hardest part for me was figuring out how to open that housing after removing it from the window area

no rush, man..

anyway, so yeah I didn't like the one with 7 on top and 8 on bottom, so I'm going back to 2 rows of 9, 18 total. Just kept on changing the way I regulated them. This looks the best, and is the most conservative, voltage regulation wise so it won't have any electrical issues. I've painted all the PCB black and am just waiting for it to dry before I build them. After that, I'll just be waiting for the 7440 bulb sockets, which I tried to get rush delivered, but when I have them then I'll be done with this batch..

^ Dude, don't worry about rushing - and I think I speak for all of us here when I say that we trust your judgment, and also that we're more than willing to wait. :)

Thanks again!

  • 2 weeks later...

here's an update, they're done! I just need to put them back together.... which can wait until I get back from vacation!

The pics do not justify how bright these things are...

without the red lens

lens on- So far I kinda dig how the black looks.. just not liking that you can see the individual LEDs...I also have pieces of stainless steel that can overlay on top with holes for the LEDs.. if I want it to look stock.. opinions?

Running lights

(when brake is applied they get brighter.. the pic looks the same so no bother posting it)

top light

My ac>DC power supply wasnt big enough to power both at the same time, so you'll all have to wait on that too

so yeah.. this has been so much work.. so much more work than I thought it was going to be, but I'm really happy with it

I think the pieces being chrome would have a better effect as far as maintaining a stocker look.

I personlly would want additional LEDs to come on when applying the brake. I would also want the top and bottom panels to ligt up when the running lights are on, and the inner ring of lights flash at the top (amber for me) when turning.

just my .02. If you decide to start doing this as a custom service lemme know. :D

haha, I'm just going to leave it same as stock pattern- bottom on 50% for running, bottom and top 100% for brakes, and top will work as blinker as well, which will be red.. amber would have been nice/my preference, but there's a red lens in the way.

I agree with the chrome for the center in the middle of the chrome ring, like we discussed before. Also you should wire them like the JDM tails top as running bottoms as brake lights.

^ I agree. Might as well go all-out. ;)

I'd then somehow incorporate an additional set of LEDs as turn-signal indicators, and even rig in a set for the rear fog.

Since all of that can be done "in red," you might as well, right?

:)

I used to have the standard JDM pattern (top set were markers and brakes, bottom right for rear fog [converted to bottom left for our LHD driving orientation]). I converted to the JDM Blitzen pattern, with the bottom set being the markers and brakes, and using the top right for rear fog [converted to top left, for our LHD]), to allow for increased low-light safety (given the larger reflector and off-angle capabilities of the bottom set, versus the top-side). Post #39 of this thread: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2173474&highlight=rear+fog#post2173474 has my old setup, the standard JDM, pattern. I truly like the Blitzen pattern better, but I think that in terms of safety value, the alternative pattern proposed by mr_luv would be even better as it would be even more eye-catching.

And since you've got a lot of room left there, it seems, Arc, I'm of the opinion that you might as well make best-use out of it! :D

As for the black/chrome thing?

I dunno - I think that's going to be left to personal tastes.

I like the blacked-out look, but I think that in order for that to be cohesive, you'll need to make sure that the light's exterior chrome highlights are toned down or removed/blacked-out, too. Alternatively, perhaps the external chrome trim would serve to highlight the area, like the greenhouse highlight that very well compliments the current Audi designs.....I honestly don't know.

actually I'm thinking that an amber light even behind the red lense will still look "more" amber than the others... enough that people will be able to discern the diff. between turn and brake... but I see what you're saying.

:munch: for more. :D

done. I stayed up until about 4:30 am this morning to finish them up, I'm quite happy with how they turned out. and I couldn't press on the brake and take pics, so some opf the pics are just the running lights, and some are the runing lights + blinkers, thats why the bottom ones seem dimmer
