Chris Doane (Brenda Priddy) has caught the upcoming 2009 Acura TSX being tested right outside of Honda's facility in the US. The new car is only slightly larger than the current TSX, but the big news is the addition of more power under the hood.

The next TSX will come in two versions. The base model will feature a more powerful version of the current 2.4L 4-cylinder with about 20 to 30 more horsepower. The model to get will be the Type-S version of the TSX that will be powered by the same 2.3L turbocharged engine that currently resides in the RDX crossover. In the TSX the 2.3L engine will put out around 260 horsepower. The Type-S version will also employ Acura's SH-AWD system which should eliminate any torque steer.

The next TSX could also eventually have a diesel option, since the Accord is set to get it for 2009.

Expect the new more powerful and aggressively styled TSX to be in showrooms by this time next year.

Sounds interesting, more like a real competition to the legacy gt than the current TSX/TL are. Subaru had better prepare something sweet in the next legacy redesign!

Go Cardinals!

Ehh.. not bad but not visually spectacular either. The big news is indeed the powertrain yet some goob can't help but yearn "...wish they put a v6 in.." in the comments immediately. Should be pretty good but again it's not a stunner. I again reiterate that I think many OEMs are putting these cars on the street with full knowledge they'll be spotted. :p

THANK GOD! HONDA needed to do this a while ago. I hope so. I love Honda technology and seriously considered the TSX except that it was underpowered and was fwd.

I totally agree. When I was car shopping I really liked the TSX- the interior was very VERY nice, was very impressed. But the FWD and the powertrain really left a lot to be desired.

A Type-S with SH-AWD and 260-hp sounds pretty impressive, but considering that a TL Type-S starts at $38k I would imagine this TSX Type-S would cost something like $32-33k.

+1

If the price is anywhere near reasonable, I would take an AWD TSX over the Subaru Legacy any day.

The current FWD TSX weighs 3,257 lbs w/ a MT. My guess is that the AWD TSX S-type will weigh around 3,600 lbs or more, pretty porky for a smallish (90.9 cubic feet interior space) compact sedan.

In comparison, the new WRX sedan weighs 3,142 lbs w/ AWD and a MT and has 94.4 cubic feet of interior space. (Yes, the new Impreza has more interior space than the Legacy sedan.)

Quote:

Chris Doane has finally caught the 2009 Acura TSX outside of a Honda facility in the U.S. It would appear the car is about the same size as the current model, or perhaps slightly larger. From the rear it looks like those fender blisters give the car a wider track. The design will reportedly get more aggressive, which you can already see on the nose of this test vehicle despite the liberal application of tape by Honda engineers.

We're especially excited for the next iteration of the TSX, because along with a 20 - 30 bump in horsepower for its rev-happy 2.4L four-cylinder, we're also expecting an S-Type model powered by a 260+ HP uprated version of the 240 HP, 2.3L turbo in the Acura RDX. We've sampled that mill before, and are addicted based on what it can do in a CUV. The 2009 Acura TSX S-Type, however, should be on a different level entirely. Torque steer is an issue, as the TSX is and always has been front-wheel drive. We have faith Honda engineers, some of the best in the biz, can quell it, though. (NOTE: Thanks to the astute reader who reminded us the Type-S model will have S-AWD, which should irradicate any hint of torque steer.)

Like I and some others said months ago Subaru is going to face some serious pressure down the road from other car manufacturers as they move to Turbo and AWD for their performance cars instead of just simple V6 FWD's they had in the past.

AWD in both the TL and TSX, I smell trouble for Subaru. Those who can afford it will opt for the Acura. I mean, I wouldn't because I can't stand Acura, however I do think that the TSX is a beautiful car.

Im willing to bet these cars will get good gas mileage too. The TL type S (286 hp) already gets 18 mpg city, 27 hwy. Given that it isn't AWD, but does have more power and is heavier, well it makes the current Legacy's fuel economy look like crap....because it is.

^ subaru transmissions are nothing to brag about.

Have you ever owned a Honda past 60K miles?

Read on the Acura MDX Transmission Fiasco?

EDIT: Talking about Auto transmissions here, which most of the TSX crowd will buy.

My dad's lude didn't have any transmission problems but it did have a fatal oil leak at 70k miles.
