wow...I really like that interior with the rosewood accents. I wouldn't have thought I would, but it looks sharp and brightens up the black interior quite well. Add some matching trim to the steering wheel and it's pass for a Lexus.

We love paying more up here... we're a bunch of polite Canadians and Subaru knows this.

"Thank you, Sir. May I have another?"

Wow... i just did a currency conversion. That 43K CAD works out to be 37K USD :icon_sad:. You Canucks are getting raped!!! No wonder some of you are importing them from the States.

And how much of that 37K comes from import duties and taxes courtesy of the Canadian Socialist Government?:lol::lol:

import tariffs, taxes on the manufacturer or distributor, fees, sales taxes, use taxes, licensing fees, currency exchange rate... and a ton of other things, probably. and maybe some profit-taking.

but if the market wouldn't bear it, the price would have to come down, or SOC would stop selling cars.

The fees and taxes don't easily get repealed, and that is the problem with government mucking with the market. A lot of added fixed costs, and not much value added.

BTW, I dont' like the wood so much. If it were a 3.0R legacy, more geared toward cruising and being a near-lux car, it doesn't do so bad, and a wood wheel would complement it nicely (outback has had that the last couple years... I would figure it still does)

But for a sporty car, the wood looks out of place, and is pretending to be fake luxury. I wish it were a real material, like brushed aluminum, or semi-metallic woven fabric (like the console covering on some Maseratis... probably way expensive) or wet-look Carbon Fiber. Something that the finish won't easily wear off like painted plastic.

I would also prefer the JDM matte charcoal console face, and separate stereo panel, but that is just pipe-dreams at this point.

Not much.

As I've described before, when the 06s and 07s were being sourced and built the exchange rate was ridiculously low. It has now returned to more historic levels but the dollars SOC put out then they now want back dollar for dollar.

We don't pay more here due to our countries tax system, the gap between US and Canadian prices is designed to act as a buffer against the variability of the canadian dollar.

Right now, with the exchange rate of $0.88US/$1.00CAN the difference is quite bad...but when the dollar was trading at less then $0.80US a few years ago it wasnt as bad.

Porsche atcually just reduced the price of all of their cars in Canada to reflect the strong dollar...previously there had been a 25% markup. now its a more reasonable 15%.

If you think its bad here, check out the UK, they pay upto 30% more than alot of the continental Europeans, Holland is even worse, with a 100% tax on new cars. (I thinks its Holland...it may be Denmark...)

'some' profit taking. I like that.

You are correct about what the market will bear, New STi's go for about $50K here and the Spec B is around $45K. I know the STi sells without issue, usually to young men who couldn't care less that their monthly insurance is between $400 - 500 per month.

We'll see about the Spec B, but if it doesn't sell, really, where do they lower the price to? They can't / won't lower price after establishing this price point.

They just won't bring it in to Canada next year, and quietly sell off the current release at discounted prices.

But our market has decided that the magic sport sedan price is $45k CAN.

G35's, 3-Series, A4 quattro, TL, all are priced right around here.

It's the place to play.

Yep. What they pay in pounds (.529/US$) is about what we pay in dollars for most cars under $50k. That's not just the 30% (VAT) but almost 48%. Yikes.

Ich bin echt viel netter, wenn ich nuechtern bin. Echt!

^ I would bet that SOC's prices will be coming down in the next couple of years due to the same currency fluctuations that raised them in the first place.

Well you're right.. even this year, SOC dropped the base Legacy about $1500 CAD - probably currency related.

SOC has made a strategic mistake or a wrong bet if you will. The looney was ridiculously undervalued for no justifiable reason. I have a friend who trades currency futures and recognized that the C$ was severely undervalued and he put it down to technical trading issues. He has made a friggin' fortune in the last 2-3 years.

SOC's mistake is that they've priced themselves out of their market niche by getting caught flat footed. I'm no business genius but they could have done at least two things to protect themselves: 1., currency hedging; 2. Borrowing capital in US$. If those two strategies had worked out, they could have kept their MSRP at a level appropriate to the demographic they target. They might have had to take some losses ameliorated by hedging, etc. and they could have continued to steadily build their customer base.

Currently, SOC is selling vehicles at prices similar to much more established brands which is not good for business. But what the hell do I know?
