CasopoliS
I just spoke with our machinist and I would have to use a threaded insert, rather than threading the Delrin itself. No biggie I guess, those cannot be too expensive if you already have the tool that threads them in. ^^ good internet find.. that is exactly how I will make mine, and the shape might be similar. Dont know how to put a logo on the top though. That is why a jewel might be nice instead.
PGT
yah....that flat black one would be the one to do. can't you etch in a logo or pattern??
rc0032
(it is slippery). Is this something you want in a shift knob?
CasopoliS
Is this something you want in a shift knob? if you have a freaky girlfriend / wife maybe *remembers old video online OH SNAP not slippery like you are thinking. Its cef. of friction is low so it glides across things well. Grabbing onto it with your hand is a different story.
Scotty
One of the big problem you will run into with Delrin is it's very difficult to glue anything to it. Logos, emblems, etc. will need to be attached mechanically. Delrin also scratches pretty easily so it might look ugly pretty fast.

Yea I understand about the logos.... but I am not sure about the scratching. All the parts here hold up quite well.
SC GT
The STi 6 speed alloy knob would be cool. Don't need a design. Can just use one of those carbon fiber STi pattern stickers. Another thing you might consider making is the Paulie adapter. That's a plastic threaded sleeve that inserts into universal shift knobs like Momos so that they screw on rather than use set screws. Also, it had the notch at the bottom for the Subaru boot. Paulie on nasioc.com made those for a while, but after a while, cost/benefit to him was such that he stopped. Underdog
I just spoke with our machinist and I would have to use a threaded insert, rather than threading the Delrin itself. I've tapped ( - grow up...) delrin from #4-40 to 1/4-20 and never had a problem. Was he concerned that you would strip the threads out too easily? What thread do you need to use? Delrin does scratch pretty easily, but I don't think it would be a problem on a shift knob. I assume you're going to NC lathe these pieces? PGT
The STi 6 speed alloy knob would be cool. that's exactly what I'd like!! As for the threading, I believe the insert on my Solberg knob is Delrin. Hard white plastic that is set into the aluminum.

I guess as a machinist, everything has to be really strong and he will always recommend the best setup.... but yes I think it can handle it in this case. The thread is M12 x 1.25 if I remember correctly. Same as the lug nuts. Snap there is an idea..... Lug nut shift knob. How petite.
Scotty
If it is the same as the lug nut, use a ultrasound press and press a lugnut into the delrin.
CasopoliS
If it is the same as the lug nut, use a ultrasound press and press a lugnut into the delrin. No point in that.... inserts are CHEAP - and if I can thread the Delrin - that is also CHEAP. Threads are the least of my worries.

PGT
the left one is almost identical to the UK Solberg knob I have. Take an 1/2 - 1 inch off the height and you have a weener.
CasopoliS
Just got the prototype knob. Its hawt. Straight out of the machine it looks wonderful. The diameter is perfect. Pics to come.
CasopoliS
Maybe I could make it shorter - I think there is enough shift boot to extend to it. Either way it will thread until it bottoms out on the shaft... notice what is on the other side of the paper background http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/414/dscf9358zc5.jpg http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/2403/dscf9363lq4.jpg http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1419/dscf9362ko9.jpg I could not line them up well.... I needed a third hand. I rested them as close as possible. Bottom line - dead on match with stock boot lip. http://img456.imageshack.us/img456/7600/dscf9361vs2.jpg

CasopoliS
looks good. keep the project moving! at this point I am just about done. If this knob fits well, I love the design and will probably stick with it. I have thought about putting two small ribs round the center to give the knob some character, or doing something unique that distinguishes it. Any ideas?
