Roof rack systems for the Legacy Wagon

Don't see why not... should lift off as a whole setup and make it much easier to reinstall, unless of course, you want to use your cross-bars for something else.

 

I actually do this with my Yakima tower and cross-bar setup with my kayak cradles in their correct places. Not joined-together (front and rear) the way a bike-rack setup would be, but you get the point.

Yakima or Thule? what are you selling? I need some towers.

Can anyone here confirm, that the base "foot" for the US market MontBlanc system is the same as the Canadian system?

 

They appear to be the same, except the Canadians have the aluminum "aero" bar, and the US market is stuck with the square bar.

They are the same as they are built in the US using the same "outback" roofline but same rack system.

 

Any pictures of the canadian version of the bar? The advantage of the square one is that all Yakima and Thule stuff works outright without any adapters.

...you'll notice that they sell that "foot" system with either the option of square bars, like the US OEM market, or those aero bars, for the Canadian market.

What I meant to say is that both Canadian and US use the same "outback" or Beluga Whale roof so both country's Legacy roof rails are the same (as opposed to the JDM ones which are shorter).

 

If I were to switch to the Aero ones, I would need to find adapters or switch my Yakima Copperheads to make them fit.

I know I'm coming into this late, but: Does anyone know if the Yakima Lowrider towers fit on a 2005 Legacy GT wagon? I would like to put a Yakima Skybox 16 on and still be able to open the tailgate. I don't have the factory crossbars. Any thoughts?

According to Yakima you want the Railgrab.

 

I got my setup before those came out though and I use the EZ Rider.

 

I don't know if the Lowrider will work with the lip that grabs on outside...

Ok. Thanks. Had a chance to get some Lowriders super cheap, but my local shop wasn't very helpful. Think I just want to find some factory crossbars if I can. Got to be some around somewhere...

Have you tried all the local dealerships?

 

Try http://www.subarugenuineparts.com. It's the online parts sales for Chaplin's in Bellevue. You can order online then ask to pick up at will call to save on the shipping.

Even though Yakima claims their Railgrab fits Legacy wagons, I don't believe they did their research properly.

When I had called them with this problem, I spoke to a Chris Adams who works at Yakima. He told me they were unaware of the problem, or even that the Legacy wagon and Outback wagon had different roof rails. My guess is that they assumed the Legacy wagon had the same raised rails and designed the Railgrab according to that.

 

I sent Yakima those very same pictures and never received a response. I pinged him after a couple of weeks had passed and he said that he had passed the message on to the engineers at Yakima. He told me to return the Railgrab back to Agees and get my money back. To this date, I've not heard or seen any changes made to their system that would correct the problem.

 

Side note: Foresters of the same vintage have similar low profile rails, BUT seem to have a different roof line profile, which might not cause the same problem.

 

According to Yakima you want the Railgrab.

I'm in Yakima, WA (Not where the rack company is from, oddly enough), but Seattle is no problem. I got a Subaru! The Pass doesn't scare me! Tried my local dealer and even he wasn't sure. Said I could get factory rails he "thought" might fit for about $100. Parts guy at the dealership didn't realize 05 wagons had different rails. Unbelievable. Also found some at subarupartsoutlet.com for same price. Might just get those. Anyone bought anything from them?

On the topic of roof racks... more specifically cargo boxes on wagons... I was able to come up with a solution to fit my older Thule Evolution 1200 on top with almost no hatch interference.

 

Basically what I did was set up the bars (Running the yakima EZ rider set up) as far forward as possible and locked down the front bar, left the rear one loose so I could move it. Put the box up there and positioned the rear bar.

-Set up like this there is some major interference with the hatch spoiler and the box.

 

Then I grabbed a shim kinda thing (came off of the Thule Spare me - it is the spacer to make sure the rack has good contact with the spare tire on a jeep) and positioned those on the rear bar underneath the box mounts. With the older Thule quick snap style hardware it works fine, don't know about any other style though.

-This raising of the back of the box allows the hatch to opening completely, with the spoiler resting on the box with the hatch at full extension. I put a couple of foam peices to protect the spoiler.

 

Ill try and get some close up shots soon and post them up here.

The Railgrab is a newer foot system for yakima. It replace the lowrider and the EZ rider.

 

The EZ rider is the best foot system for the LGT Wagons, but unfortunately they dont make it anymore. You might be able to find it somewhere though if you looks.

Here are some shots of my set up. Has the box on there right now... but usually has surf pads and a bike rack in the summer... although thinking about leaving the box up there this summer to put my kite gear in.
