huh, i have been noticing one of my rear flares is showing a gap on the front, and some foam. was thinking about how much of a pain it would be to "fix" whatever is letting it come off, but you make it look so easy. Is the foam along the top edge just there to fill any gap, or is it sticky (or supposed to be sticky) on both sides?

I'll take better pictures, I can't tell if it was supposed to be sticky. it's very thin and mine is rotted and fallen out of a lot of places.

probably is just to keep the flare from rubbing on the paint/fender then, and i've just lost some foam.

does make me wonder why i thought it was coming off though. maybe one of my clips is off/loose/broken. will have to look closer at what i have going on.

regardless, even though i'll probably never roll my fenders, i've greatly appreciated all you've posted so far.

and keep up the hard (but worthwhile) daddy daycare work

Foam

I warmed the paint to 135 f still cracked. Not a big deal I have touch up paint I'll spray in this area when I am done. But, I don't see how it's possible to do this without cracking the paint. Some of that might be because of how flat I rolled the lip though.

so much pull. Such wow. The eastwood fender pliers were really useful for this. Our fender doesn't have a lot of rigidity and sort of flexes around with the fender roller. Using the pliers helps me physically pull the whole fender up.

I would not want to do this on a car without fender flares....

that all fits under the flares??

There is room for even more...

borrowing the eastwood tools?

I'm impressed you are DIY'ing it. But you do have nap time. I no longer have the luxury of nap time with my 5 year olds... and when they nap... sheesh, I usually need one too.

Bought them. I am a little grumpy because I didn't get my nap today.

Slightly better write up for the passenger side, because now I know what I am doing (debatable).

Rubbing on OEM tire size + pinks. Munching on my tire.

What we are working with. You can see I have been rubbing in the front and back of the wheel well.

This time I used painters tape to draw my line that I would Dremel.

http://i.imgur.com/6KCWhnO.jpg

This line was based off of looking up at my rub line.

Under the fender liner there is the mounting point for the bumper. As you can see, there has been a little bit of rubbing. On the drivers side this area was mangled because it had been digging into the tire. 8 month old face in the background (still only slept 30 mins at a time today and was very grumpy, but this time I did get my nap)

Cut away to expose the tab / mounting point

Notched so I could roll and pull this section

Cut out a small part of the fender liner that mates up with the OEM position of the body. This section matches my current rub marks. Be careful on the drivers side. The tube for the windshield wiper fluid goes through here. I cut it few months ago by accident.

It is double sided tape that holds the top of the flare on. This side was in much better condition (it was actually sticky) and I had to really pull it to get it to come loose. It makes me think the other side had been off at least once already.

I had my wife help me with the heat gun. I managed to roll the fenders with out cracking the paint to a certain degree. As soon as I went slightly too fast I got a tiny crack, but I was able to slow down and keep the rest from cracking. Until, I rolled the fenders completely flat. I think that is just too much of an angle for the paint to stretch (and it was around 160f then). Pulling no chance, having my wife help with heat made it go so much faster, but for pulling this much, not a lot you can do to keep it from cracking.

I have some touch-up paint in a spray can and I just sprayed the cracks to seal them. If I had something to apply with a brush it would have gone much faster.

I think Dead.Mr found some black plastic liner at like Home depot that he was using to extend the OEM liners (replace what he cut), I'll look into doing the same.

In pulling / heating the fender, I have slightly deformed the whole fender and the three mounting holes. The clips I have seem to be too small for those holes. Debating just bolting them on. Also, the fender doesn't sit flush all the way and I think I need thin double sided tape to replace what was there.

Pretty happy with my front clearance now

The guy that did my roll warned that you can't do much of a pull and get the plastic to sit flush against the metal. It's possible you could warm the flair and maybe get it to sit right. no idea what kind of heat is safe.

Maybe just go with it now, and if there is a gap just wait until a super hot summer day let it cook in the heat, pull it off and see if you can restick it with the plastic warmed up.

  • 2 weeks later...

some crappy pictures.

255/40/18 18x9 et40. In the back I needed a 3mm spacer to clear the rear fender liners. I just rolled the rear lip flat. No pull. So I still have about a half an inch if I need it. Need to get my Whiteline arms on and get an alignment. Curious if I will need those spacers once I get an alignment.

Front is rubbing slightly unsure exactly where. I think more camber and caster will help. Maybe just need to keep trimming plastic. Once I get my Whiteline rear arms on I'll get another alignment. Still deciding if I want to put in the matching rear pink spring.

so are you using the OEM bars to attach the skybox? i'm thinking i need to get some maintenance done and just make the Outback our camping car. already has rails and hoping the bars are fine. would cost another $400 to equip the CR-V with what it would need to even hold a $400 box...

Funny you are planning to do that. I am also planning to get a skybox (21), a hitch rack (1up usa), and perhaps a fridge/freezer :spin:

ours was always the backpacking car before the kiddo came. much less stuff needed to be packed in then though, not that the outback doesn't win in interior space hands down.

Really we've moved to using her car all the time cause we recently discovered she (my wife) gets car sick (so she just drives her car, the CR-V), it's newer and thus more dependable and comfortable, and i've just let a lot of maintenance on the OBXT slide for too long. it also gets better gas mileage :) .

but mine can move a lot more (engine power wise), can go more places (lower CG, more clearance), can hold more inside, and already has roof rails and hitch.

even thinking about pushing it a little and getting a tiny tent trailer (with electronic brakes and tranny cooler). need to weigh all the things we'd take camping for a week...

yeah. We have two kids (1 and 4 years old). so that's why we are currently trying to figure out the best solution. Right now, we are thinking of the following:

option 1: get a skybox, hitch rack, fridge

option 2: get a hitch rack, and a trailer (e.g. see spacetrailers.com--they have pretty nice trailers but a bit of $$), fridge

option 3: get a harbor freight trailer which has a cargo box on it and is cheap, keep the bikes on the roof, and get a fridge. Cheaper overall option so far since I already have my roof bike racks, but mpg will hurt.

And yeah, we like to do some light offroad too.

Yep OEM rails.

Outback is way to small for a camping car for me. Dogs make it so that there is very little space in the hatch. That being said, I'll still take it camping this year.

These are what the spacers I bought look like.

Hadvw bought some Subaru specific ones and his look amazing. quality beats these out of the park. They were $20-$30 for two though and mine were $12

and not hub-centric, which is the problem i had with mine. Hub has a little chamfer showing beyond the rotor causing things to not sit flat. How many rotations of the lugs? haven't checked mine, but figure i can just remove one lug and then put it back on while counting rotations. tirerack says for our threads we need 8+ full rotations.

As for the dog, i pack things in the back to be flat and "hard", then throw a blanket/bed over the top and make him lay down on it. he's usually at seat back height and has maybe 2 feet to live in...
