Subaru won't offer a Legacy GT, so I bought a Chevrolet SS.

Recommended Posts

Why would they do that?

At any rate, how did you fabricate that?

I guess they don't want Camaro RS owners buying Z28 parts.

I cut out the guts of a used SS grille, cut out the guts of of Crown Vic PI grille, cut out the center of the Chevy emblem, epoxied it all together, lots of sanding, couple coats of primer, more sanding, paint, and then finally put on the carbon fiber vinyl. It was a shit load of work. :spin:

About halfway through my first road trip with this car. Not concerned with fuel economy but it's getting close enough to the EPA rating at just shy of 90MPH that I don't care. Excellent road car, lopes along at high speeds effortlessly.

Ok, that was just dumb... Holy Crap, just noticed your post count. Is there anyone else that can touch that? Wait don't answer and dilute our thread. ;)

You got a new axle back, I got a new speeding ticket. LOL.

I guess 9MPH over is quite the big deal to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. They're notoriously strict, one even wrote my Federal LEO buddy a ticket last year for 10MPH over.

My gripe on this one is mostly I wasn't actually going 9MPH over according to my speedometer. I was going 6MPH over, maybe 7MPH since the car surges ever so slightly on hills. I haven't had a speeding ticket in over a decade, and I'm considering contesting it but it will cost more in fuel to drive there and back than it will to pay the fine.

get a lawyer? ask the cop for proof of radar reading and last calibration

There's a lot you can do yo fight the ticket

I'm really amazed by how quiet this car is at speed... One time the HUD was showing 100mph and it felt like 70ish in my LGT

The sensation of speed in this car is deceptive. Sure if you bury the loud pedal and let the LS3 eat you know you're going fast, but just using 1/8th throttle it makes sneaky speed with no drama and little noise.

Some observations from my road trip which was from the southern Black Hills to the north shore of Lake Superior and back (with 5 days on the shore at my buddy's cabin):

1.) The SS makes very short work of passing other cars at medium highway speeds on two lane highways. In fact for an out of the box stock sport sedan I'd go so far as to say the SS can strait up crush 95%+ of the other cars I encounter on the road, if you want to be ahead of them they simply can't stop you short of blocking your pass. I had one idiot in a V6 Honda Accord try to keep me from passing. Didn't work.

2.) Tunnels are a glorious experience. Between Two Harbors, MN and Gooseberry Falls State Park there are two excellent tunnels cut into the igneous rock bluffs overlooking the lake. Well worth slowing down, opening all the windows and doing a 2nd gear pull to 3rd gear at WOT.

3.) Handling is excellent, two lane twisty roads are fun. Not so fun are all the other drivers who seem to be terrified of going around a curve. Then again they provide opportunities for activity number 1.)...

4.) Potenza must be an ancient Japanese word for noisy.

5.) Seats are firm, after about 8 hours in the seat I need to stop and stretch my legs. Of course this can be said for most car seats. Otherwise comfort is very good, ergonomics are solid, and a comfortable driving position is not too hard to find. I am used to driving a 1/2 ton pickup with more generously sized seats though, so I have gotten used to being able to shift around on the seat to stay comfortable. This tactic is not possible with the SS as the seats are made to hold you in place.

6.) No one knows what this car is (aside from a bored SD state trooper...sigh), I cruised all the way through Minnesota and into Canada typically around 10MPH over the speed limit and attracted no attention to myself from Johnny Revenue collector.

7.) You don't see yourself coming and going. I observed not one single other SS on the road. Far more likely to see the Caprice PPV. In fact the state trooper who pulled me over was driving one, I think this is why I got a ticket because he knows what these cars really are.

  • 2 weeks later...

The SS handles so well for an almost 4000# car it almost defies logic and that's on the crappy OEM Potenzas. It will be very interesting to see how it does on better tires.

Just turned over 3k miles and now ready for intake/tune I think.
